  • Robert Schumann (1810-1856)
    Toccata in C major, Op. 7 (1829-1830; 1833-1834)
    Nikolai Lugansky, 1994
“Schumann's Toccata, Op. 7 is a perpetual-motion tour de force that calls for pianists of exceptional digital abilities. It is cast in in a sonata-allegro form; bold chords announce the main theme, which requires a continuous rocking motion in both hands even as it cascades over the keyboard. (This is likely the sort of passage that Schumann famously ruined his hands trying to master.) The second subject offers little relief for the pianist, and the development, with its unison octaves, even less. The piece finally fades away, as though from exhaustion. For all its fireworks, the Toccata never loses the delightful spirit of the composer at his most playful, the quality that lifts the work beyond the realm of mere technical display.”

Потрясающая интерпретация труднейшего произведения Шумана. Николай Луганский - многогранный, разноплановый исполнитель всех жанров музыки. Из многих пианистов, сыгравших токкату, Луганский лучший!

Very happy for this recording without the distortion. One of the best Schumann Toccatas out there.

I know it is the most difficult piece of piano work composed by Schumann, but I couldn't help but admire Lugansky's excellent technique and perfect interpretation while listening to it.

5:37 The only one who gets these 2-fisted chords right and clean. His lack of pedal makes many passages clear that most others blur into mush. (But in a few places a little whiff of pedal wouldn't hurt.)

I thought Pogorellich's version was the best, but I think it's more ecstatic than that.

These 2 are the best versions, each one in its own way.

Very different from Argerich's, but both perfect in different ways.

Argerich's has a frightening technical capacity, while Lugansky's voicing is supreme.

Yes, her 1960 recording is frightening all right. It's a real horror show in spots. She even has a little breakdown near the end.

I don't understand why you would want to rush/skip through the obvious emotional climaxes of the piece.

Please, please, can you post sonata and symphonic etudes form this album?! I had it on iTunes but they discontinued this CD and I love those recordings!
