I also hated Dickens in high school. Now in my 40s, I not only appreciate him but absolutely worship his books. Pure genius.

Ah, the affordable classics, these series formed the bedrock of my self education when I had no money to buy books, I just went for these versions of the classics, classics had always been the best bang-for-your-buck books you can buy,not only are they cheap with a complex hence thought-provoking way of writing and prose, but their lessons and themes on human nature are timeless and give you a lot of meat to think about and to ponder on. My favourites are the Transcendentalists ( Emerson, thoreau and whitman) and of course ,Dostoyevsky ( I love Russian lit haha). Literature has always been psychology on an intuitive level, and I will die on that hill defending that statement.
They stopped printing the Signet Classics edition of War and Peace before I had the chance to get it. Sad 😭

Would love to see a review of Don Quixote. I love how you read widely.

A friend of my mom hired me to help in N California sales for Bantam Books in the late 70s it was fun getting each month a box of all the new releases ' everything' between 16-30 They did not pay all that well, but for me it had perks, because I used it to meet many authors at guest events and signings, even got some theater tickets for books that became films. Not only us Bantam/ Bertelsmann, but any publishers that the distributors sold. They knew who was who and others visiting the Bay Area and I'd 'pop in' even take back up stock to have them sign. Therefore could meet & chat at will. I had been a photographer in the Navy and was the photog for San Jose Magazine in 77-9 Got som fun gigs. Getting an autograph on a book is some times bad what contains make it valuable? When an author handwrites To JFK. my favorite President may he do well in office. dated correctly and trully written. Sometime it is when and to who it was made for. Collections somewtimes are sheer crazy: beanie babies, cabbage patch kids, POGS, DC MARVEL etc (WHERE DID MOM PUT THEM? 1960-68) CARDS AFL NFL AMER NATL EVEN HOCKEY THEN NBA....

I have been working on reading more classics. The only classic author we explored in school in my time was Shakespeare.

What is it about Signet and Bantam that you stick to those? Shelf uniformity? I generally buy most classics second hand when I find them, but my perception is Penguin and Oxford Editions have the best reputation for solid historical context in the intros, annotations for the old stuff, and the covers are usually pretty cool to. There's some really dope covers from the Wordsworth editions also.
Hopefully I'll read more my collection that's older then 100 years and form better opinions on my favorite editions, lol!

shelf conformity yes. they all are the same size. Penguin is a little larger sometimes. Oxford is allways larger
