I’m a pack-light, travel-solo frequent-traveler senior citizen who is just about to add cruising to the itinerary, and I think my existing travel hacks will be ideal for cruising.
Shoes: 1: white sneakers (leather, easy to clean), wear on the plane. They are very fashionable now and can be worn everywhere. 2: Silver sandals. Can be worn as day wear, or in the evening. 3: Black suede ballet flats. For day wear, or with clip-on diamanté buckles for evening. I have tired, old, buniony feet. All of these shoes are brands made to be flattering but heavy-duty walking shoes for feet needing my kind of pampering.
Pants: Black only - practical, and flattering colour for my body shape. One pair of beautifully cut jersey pants for evening, also fine for daytime smart casual. Two pairs lightweight travel pants from a company specialising in adventure wear (No, they don’t look like hiking pants for up the Amazon, they look like ordinary pants, but very hard-wearing and drip dry overnight, no ironing needed.)
Tops: 1:Black blazer. Goes with everything, goes everywhere, elevates any outfit, wear it on the plane to save space. 2:Several good-quality cotton tee shirts - short sleeve, long sleeve, bright colours to liven up the black pants. Quality cotton keeps on looking good after many washings and you can get away without ironing. 3:Sparkly silver top (wrinkle-free knit fabric) to wear with the jersey pants for dressy evenings. 4:Black jersey top same fabric as pants for evenings, or under the blazer for day wear. 5:Sweaters. One hot-pink turtle neck pullover, one black cardigan. Both of these are lightweight cashmere, found at sale prices, so luxe look without the luxe price tag. Both are hand washable if necessary.
Accessories: bright, light-weight cashmere wrap - good for evening wear, scarf for cooler weather, snooze wrap on the plane. Small, square, colourful neck scarves - tie around neck for pulled together look, tie to bag handle for a bit of colour. Some inexpensive costume jewellery bling to liven up evening wear. Tote bag, mid-size, dark beige, goes with everything, holds all I need, doubles as a smart-looking handbag. Sun hat - cream-coloured Panama style, washable and uncrushable for packing.
Add swimsuit, undies, nightie, etc. The entire list here, excluding blazer, sneakers, and whatever else I’m wearing to travel fits into a carry on bag. Everything unrolls from packing cubes ready to go, no ironing required. Everything can be washed. Add a personal-size bag that slides over carry on bag handle for toiletries, electronics, medications, etc. Everything I need for months, if necessary, can be pushed around an airport with one hand, and easily lifted into overhead bins.
This is a wardrobe that fits my particular style. I like a tailored look, and find black flatters me, as long as I have a touch of colour to brighten the look. I haven’t worn high heels for forty years, keep arms and legs covered because of UV sensitivity, and can’t remember the last time I wore a dress. But I get compliments when I travel. I while back, instead of my usual solo travel, I was on a group tour where we all saw each other day in, day out for two weeks. People were surprised that I could manage an apparently effortless well-dressed and appropriate outfit for every different activity we did out of these two small bags.

I'm going on my first cruise in a few weeks, and I am really undecided about what shoes to bring. It's forever a debate of fashion over comfort/practicality. Workout shoes or Sperrys for shore excursions (the former are more multi-functional for going to the gym, but the latter are much cuter, and still comfortable? Keen sandals vs flip-flops vs water shoes for beach? And do I really need a nicer/dressier shoe in addition?

    • @manonsinclairladyofblairad9675
      @manonsinclairladyofblairad9675 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@Zintastikcowbell It all depends on the outfits you bring. If you intend of dressing up for dinners, a more dressy shoe would be nice. They don't have to be high heels, a kitten heel can be just as dressy. Flip flops don't take a lot of space and can be nice for the pool or beach. I would bring only one pair of walking shoes, wether a pair of sneakers or whatever is most comfortable for you to walk, visit, etc.

Separates and layering are the secret. For one month i take 2-3 bottoms and 6 tops, and a travel outfit. Wear a fresh top for dinner, then that same top the next day. One bottom is exclusively for dinners. I wash tops, lingerie, socks in sink every couple days so they are always clean. Different jewelry, scarves, sparkling toppers change it up every day so i look different in photos! I spend my luggage space and weight on shoes bringing at least 3 pr. That takes up one side of a 22” carryon!

Your bonus tip is the best one. I have taken a picture of the outfits I pack and put together mix and match options so I know what to bring next time. I will always say for ladies, dresses are such an easy option. One garment to put on, takes up minimal space in the suitcase. A simple tank or Tshirt dress can be dressed up or down for a day in port or dinner in the dining room. Agree with what you said, as you said you are a dress girl too!

In my regular travels as done for years, to include cruises, I normally pack 1 dark hand towel. This is used for drying my face once I've soaped up and washed off makeup, and only if I don't bring makeup remover. I've never liked dirtying up the white towels to capture mascara, blush foundation, eye color and powder. Works pretty well!!

Leaving on my first cruise in a week. I LOVE packing cubes. Lol. The suitcase & carryon is so organized. I have 3 pairs of shoes packed, two dress sandals that go with all my outfits, formal & casual as well as a pair of water shoes and then I’m wearing my tennis shoes on the flight there to keep that weight out of my bags. I can’t imagine needing more shoes then that. The only reason I’m taking two pairs of dressy sandals is just because in case a strap breaks or something. 💞💞💞

So on shoes, for me, five pairs is my go-to/gotta-have. Formal shoes, everyday sandals, pool flip-flops, sneakers, and water shoes. I just can't get the list fewer than that. LOL! And next cruise, I am going to try the packing cubes. At first, I didn't see the value. But now, I like the thought of being able to just transfer them from a suitcase to the closet shelf or drawer. And I am definitely not the type who could pack carry-on only! LOL! Kudos to yall who can!

Pack what you can on hangers in a plastic bag like a dry cleaner bag then double or triple roll to fit in the bag. Pack this at the top over the other stuff, Pack into the voids. When you arrive, just hang. Less wrinkles easy yo unpack. Use Space Bags for other clothes then use the bag for laundry

On our first cruise, on Royal Caribbean, (which we loved,) I bought a long, leopard print dress. On our third cruse, on Holland America, which we didn't really like, I found a shawl of the same print. I decided to wear the dress and carry the shawl to dinner that night. I was already on the elevator when the door opened for more passengers. One lady took a look at me and would not get onto the elevator. She had just bought the EXACT SAME DRESS that same day! We had our picture taken together, and I still have it. (we looked like Mutt and Jeff - she was tall and I'm short.) On our last cruise, we went over my birthday, and every time my husband saw someone he told them to tell me happy birthday. I think almost everyone on the ship told me. We are going on a cruise on Celebrity the end of October over my husband's birthday, so I'm going to do the same for him!

This was mainly about clothes, but my problem is overpacking my tech. This time I set everything up on the dining room table and found out I was packing about 5kg of stuff that I will not use, even allowing for my rule of packing a set of cables in each bag. While I had replaced my adapters with multi-device / universal voltage USB C PD + USB C + USB A chargers, I still had all of the single-device chargers in my bags. Also, one multi-device charger and one set of cables in each bag means if one bag doesn't make it, you just need to charge some devices one at a time.

Great video! I always pick a "theme color", usually navy blue, and build mix & match outfits using a minimum numbers of pieces. I also like to bring 2 or 3 large silk scarves - they take almost no space and can be used to accessorize any solid top or dress for a different look. Good, sparkly costume jewelry can also elevate a look for evening.

Shoes are the hardest! If we are doing a cold weather cruise with hiking, we bring hiking shoes, tennis shoes, pool shoes and nice shoes for night. For warm weather cruises we eliminate the hiking shoes. So 3-4 which is hard to do. As for the 3-4 tops for each pair of shorts or pants, that is the 🔑 key to not overpacking. We always bring our own snorkel gear and re-usable water bottles. They can be refilled in any restaurants or buffet. We do need actual paperback books. At least 1-2

This will be my first cruise, but not my first trip. I make sure that every top I bring goes with every bottom, whether it's a skirt, pants, or shorts. Same thing for evening wear; if I bring skirts or dress pants, the tops for evening wear must go with all the evening bottoms. I have bathing suit cover ups that can be worn as dresses, maybe over a pair of leggings. That gives me maximum flexibility with minimal items.

The toiletry bag tip is great. My husband and I have our own toiletry bags that are always ready to go. If we are away for more than 3-4 days I top up our mini bottles when we get home. I also have a small make up bag with the a little bit of everything. Foundation, mascara, blusher, about 4 eye pencils in different colours. 1 neutral eye shadow and 3 lipsticks, red, pink and brown.

I bring 3 black jersey skirts for a week. They roll up small and don’t wrinkle. With t shirts they are casual. With a nice top they become smart casual. With a fancy, sparkly top they become fine for formal night. If the weather is going to be cool, I pack 3 or 4 pairs of leggings and a few sweaters/sweatshirts. I bring 2 pairs of shoes - a pair of Sketchers Mary Janes which go pretty much anywhere, and which I wear on the plane, and a pair of nude heels that work for everything dressy. I pack a waterproof windbreaker, underwear, a couple pairs of nude tights and a bathing suit and that is it.

Quality folding ballet flats! (I like Yosi Samra) Not into the pool thing, so these are all I wear onboard -- usually I carry a metallic pair, a and a dark matte neutral pair, in addition to whatever more substantial water-resistant shoe I wear on my flights and in port.
For a TA cruise next spring I'll be bringing the above plus a few each of lightweight merino midi dresses, tights, and cardigans in neutral colors, three cashmere-silk pashminas in champagne and two bright colors, two belts (one metallic), a few necklaces, a few interesting silk scarves, several packable high-UPF sun hats (each w/neck strap), and a rain jacket -- everything close to the body can be easily rinsed and will dry quickly, and all of the selections will work for the second part of the trip (Italy). (I do occasionally wash my merino wool items, but for a 2 1/2 to 3 week trip, rinsing will be good enough.)
No pants or shorts - like you, not a pants person.
One of the dresses definitely reads as "cocktail dress" and will work for Cunard formal nights when paired with the right accessories, but that one and the slightly plainer dresses are the bulk of my everyday wardrobe for work, play... and even sleep.

I wear a uniform of sorts to work, so I love bringing cute clothes. I bring a different dress for each night to wear to dinner. Although I have different colored sweaters. I stick to a black and a cream, since they can go with any dress.
I'm good with shoes. I bring a gold glittery and black glittery flat sandal for evening. I wear sneakers on embarkation day, since these are the bulkiest shoes to pack. On our recent Bermuda cruise that was switched to Canada, I wore my sneakers during our port excursions and even went to the gym on a sea day since it was cold outside. If flying, i wear my sneakers on the plane. I DO bring more than one pair of flip flops, the kind with a bit more support. Since I wear a ladies 11 or 12, I worry that if one pair breaks, I won't be able to find a replacement. For beach excursions. I add water shoes.
I usually do not pack jeans. If flying, I'll wear a pair on the plane. This time I did pack one pair of blue jeans and one pair of white, which I wore twice with different tops.
On the cruise, make notes of what I need more or less of the next time. Also, once home, I replenish toiletries. I have an LLBean hanging toiletry kit that is over 10 years old. It's sturdy and holds everything I need. I hang it on one of the hooks on the bathroom door.
I still tend to pack one or two extra shorts sets, since some days I go from swimsuit and cover-up to dress for evening.

Hubby and I always start our travels in jeans, a nice top, and runners, which will be the case in June, with a fleece jacket and light rain jacket as required (if not, in the backpack, along with snacks, water bottle and electronics). I'll bring a foldable tote for laundry and maybe indulge in the service, but I'll only need to pack sandals and my nice Sketchers black shoes and navy shoes, which are all collapsing tops, so maybe they'll all fit in a cube (which I ordered a few from the Temu site). Since my husband served 33 years in the Canadian Armed Forces, and we've traveled a fair bit with our two sons, packing has become an art. Nicely dressed I've done, but more than one dressy occasion is definitely new to me. I have one dress that will roll into practically nothing, as do most of my other clothes I'd normally hang up, my Alia black pants and Northern Reflections fancy tops included. Hubby bought me my own 24" suitcase for Christmas, so I could fit my fancies too. His suit will take up plenty of space in his suitcase, but the rest of his attire is easy pack. We just have to figure out how many nights we want to dine fancy (our anniversary and formal night, at least).

I'd add, check the weather at the ports you're visiting. Alaska & Northern Europe tend to be rainy. A small umbrella is a must. I went to Antarctica, left the middle Us in December, overnight in Buenos Aires (summer temps there) then to really cooler temps. Layers are your friends. Active shoes for hiking, walking shoes for many tours.

My shoes "go to" is a pair of black sandals. THese can be worn around the ship during the day, but also sub for "dressy" shoes on dress up or formal nights, and they take up relatively little room in the suitcase. That, plus a work out/sneaker type shoe and maybe a water shoe will do it. Wear the sneakers to save luggage space (yes, a pain for TSA). I also keep a cruise suitcase packed of those things that I won't wear again until my next cruise. I got home in mid November. I won't need warm weather clothes until the next cruise, so rather than putting them away, I put them in the cruise suitcase.
And yes, definitely review the "things I won't need next time" particularly if you are on the same cruise line. I believed too many TH-cam videos (despite 40+ previous cruises) and packed so much that we didn't need!

Because it is such a long cruise, I would like to work out on the cruise every day, and I have been struggling how to pack for that. I came up with an idea after researching all kinds of things. I am going to be bringing Only two sports bras, two workout, shorts, and a couple shirts. That is all I will be bringing and I will be hand washing one of the sets so I can wear the other set the next day and vice versa. I thought it was genius. And thank you so much for all of your videos. I shared your channel with my cruise group and they have all loved it.

Long before i purchased your planner i planned but your Planner has made it more organized for me, TY. My issue is toiletries…packing cubes have been a-godsend for that purpose. What i do is transfer my products into smaller brown plastic bottles from Amazon and put them in the packing cubes . Everything i bring now i wear😂🚢

I’m a classic dramatic with my style. I rarely, rarely, have prints and always opt for solid, timeless pieces so it’s never hard to make outfits and miss and match bc it all goes together. I may buy one, two tops “on trend” accessories or simply style my hair/makeup with newer styles to not be boring. I guess prints could be fun I just stay away bc unless done really well and proper fabric it looks cheap to me, but everyone’s brain is different.
I don’t cruise and never plan to but I do enjoy small sailboat trips. On these trips we stop at yatch clubs for dinner or lunch or a swim. What works best for me is, boat shoes - these are great while on boat/ship and I use for the pool. Tennis shoes for exercising and exploring the small port towns and a flat neutral thong/ankle secure shoe that could be dressy or could be casual .. think thin leather straps similar to flip flop shape across foot between big toe/the rest and strap around ankle. I prefer in this order… neural/tan/color of my skin or gold or black depending on the trip activities. I usually opt for beige. I wear these to the pool if tired or boat shoes or with my dressier outfits for dinner. If you have waterproofed dressier thong/ankle secured shoe you can wear those as water shoes. I have a neutral/beige pair that aren’t meant to be wet but don’t ruin bc the thing part is coated leather and tiny.
If I have a cocktail or something nicer planed I may bring dressier kitten heal or wedge and leave the dress sandals at home or try and pack them in if they fit bc they are so small.

I found a great book on kindle( free read) and learned all about creating wardrobe capsules. I am going to apply it to this cruise I and my daughter are taking. Plus we will be able to do laundry and I have premeasured and packed my laundry washing soda and tide pods, along with dryer sheets. all fit into small pouch. I will be packing the collapsing laundry hamper you recommended as well. as febreeze to freshen clothing not dirty but just needing a pick me up. I'm taking a second hamper for refresh load to make life easier. Hint take fabric softener sheets and a spray bottle to keep just water in and just refresh any clothes that do not need washing a time or remove wrinkles for a load at a time. $3.50 per load beats second bag/over weight bag I'm taking a 10 day Alaska cruise but want to pack as light as I can. Just to be safe, I checked the location on my Carnival Miracle laundry room. Score! probably less than 10 steps, and just around the corner.

I eve ing bag and one day time purse, 1 set of jewlery you can wear that goes with everything you will be wearing and doing. A sarong is great for sea days or half days when you know much of your days will be spent in your bathing suit. I would be at the pool and then my husband would want to go for lunch at the buffet. I would wrap the sarong around me in the front and criss cross it in front and tie it behind my neck, turning it into a “dress”. I was able to go from pool to buffet without changing clothes. I took a horseback tour that ended at the beach. After my swim, I didn’t want to put my riding jeans back on. I put my tank top back on and then put the sarong on as a skirt for the trip back to the ship.

Great Video. As a man, formal nights were difficult when I started cruising with 2 suits multiple shirts and shoes; it was crazy and I thought there's got to be a better way! I got wise. I bought a medium colored blue blazer, two pants beige and black, 2 different colored shoes brown and black, 2 shirts white and blue, and 3 ties, go crazy with ties. With this combination, the change up is endless (sort of an exaggeration.) This was for a 14 day cruise with 4 formal nights and it worked perfectly. If you want to go super formal rent one tux and call it a day. I personally found that too stuffy for a cruise but some people love it. Also on casual night dining, polo shirts are the way to go; easy to pack and light weight for those warm days. I bring 2 no crease slacks for casual nights. Have fun.

I photograph each outfit for myself, husband and son and download them to my computer weeks or months before the cruise. I then can decide what we will wear each day according to our tentative schedule. A week or two before departing home, I go through the photos and see where I can streamline. Surprisingly, I always find items to be taken out.
I also use the sundresses and accessorize them differently. As far as shoes, since most of out time off ship is spent sightseeing and museums, I usually bring a pair of glitzy sandals or wedgies that are good for walking but can work as a dual purpose for the evenings. I try to keep shoes down to 3 pair. One will be worn and the other 2 packed.

Although temps will vary a lot (Arctic circle vs Paris), I am hoping to do as I have done on past trips of 3 weeks-- as little as medium case to check and one small carry-on bag. Layering will be the key I think, plus quick dry items washed in the sink every couple days. Easier packing will be later in the summer for a 2 week trip including a 7 day Turkey and Greece cruise, as all areas will be HOT!

Hi, Ilana! Very good tips! I can tell you that I use many of those, for example planning the outfits that I will wear every day for excursions or on the ship in the evenings. That helps me a lot even if I decide to change the outfit one day. Another thing that I pay attention to is the colors that I am bringing with me not to end up with only one color for the entire cruise (good that I have realized before traveling) it is not that important, as you said, nobody cares, but then you take your pictures and you see that everything you brought was in the same color. I bring things that mix and match and, for the shoes, I try to bring my most comfortable ones and, if I have new ones, I try by all means to break them into before I wear them during my trip. I am packing this week for my next cruise and I believe that I am taking 2 flat sandals, one black and one white, and a pair of wedges in white, of course my tennis shoes and a pair of walking sandals. I will do my best not to over pack. Wish me luck!!

I’m sooooo glad you did this video! I always pack too many shoes. My last cruise I packed five pairs and only wore two. 🙄 Lesson learned. Lol

I bring 3 pair of shoes. Sneakers, that I wear on embark and depart and any walking excursions. Then a pair of sandals or flip flops to wear on board or beach excursions. Then a pair of dressy sandals to wear with every dress that I take

I’m a certified overpacked & a work in progress lol. So I was packing & got very upset with myself. Oh no I’m doing it again!! Then I paused, and this is the good part. I took all my stuff out of the the new blue suitcase. And put into my old black suitcase. I did the successful happy dance. Look I’m not an over-packer!! I forgot I went from a 29” to a 27”. I had room in the 29” 🎉🎊😎😂
