I really like your AmTrack videos. My wife and I have been on many of their routes all across the country. We are in our 80s now and sticking close to the farm. But I love watching you both talking about your trips and telling us about your experiences.
Funny thing about taking Amtrak to Maine....the Downeaster that services Maine isn't connected to the other Amtrak lines. You have to get off in South Station in Boston, and travel (by foot, Uber/Taxi/subway) to North Station in Boston to get on the Downeaster.. Also I understand that unlike other Amtrak trains the Downeaster provides Pepsi products, not Coca Cola.
There are the faintest murmurings beginning about restoring the old Boston to Montreal service, which presumably would also originate from North Station. I'd love to see it happen, but it probably won't in my lifetime.
I prefer Pepsi anyways and was upset when they changed it to Coca Cola few years ago but its cool just do the Sprite since Coke doesn’t work well with me😮😮😮 But I never complain because always love the Amtrak system
@@vrkoven Same with the Sunset Limited. It used to go from Jacksonville, FL to Los Angeles. When Katrina made landfall in the panhandle the tracks were damaged and the service "suspended".
Great content as usual. The “DESIRE” sign in your hotel room in New Orleans is a reference to the play “Street Car Named Desire” by Tennessee Williams written in 1947, set in New Orleans. It was made into a film in 1951, starring Marlon Brando.
Get off at the Exeter, NH stop sometime. You are walking distance to a beautiful downtown. Lots of shops, restaurants, B&B, home of Phillips Exeter. The train stop in Exeter has a walk up ice cream stand and Trackside Cafe which is our favorite breakfast stop! Thank you!!
I've flown numerous times in the past 25 years. This past weekend I traveled by train for the first time. So much leg room in coach, it makes me never want to fly again unless I'm going overseas. I really had an excellent time. Thank you for these vids. They really helped me out.
Back in the Olden Days when Amtrak was Northern Pacific they had a car with the Vista Dome. You had to climb stairs to get to it, it was up high, and it was kind of on the honor system, since there were more passengers that spots up there. It definitely was the coveted place, though.
Thanks for sharing this fun journey with us! You can imagine what I think the best part of it was. 🤣🤣🤣 in all seriousness though I do truly appreciate how you balance showing us time on the train and time in the cities that you stop in on a cross country trip. ❤️🇨🇦🚞
One knock I have about New Orleans is that if you're changing trains (in any direcion), you have to spend a night in a hotel. (I think they should take a couple of unused sleeping cars, put them on a track at the station that is not otherwise in use, plug them into ground power, and rent out their rooms for the night!) Anyway, I found a nice Holiday Inn on Loyola Street about a mile from the station, and got there by streetcar! You can also take the airport bus if the timing is right. I do have to visit the WW II museum on my next trip there.
Amtrak once allowed sleeper car passengers who bought tickets East/Westbound to/from NO on their Heritage transcontinental cars to sleep on board at the station overnight. An attendant was on board but meals needed to be purchased elsewhere. When I woke up the next morning, I would be on my way to NYC on the Crescent or L.A. on The Sunset Ltd. without having to change trains. That was during the '80's. It would be great if that service returned, but Viewliners would be needed on this route.
So glad your issue with BOS-BON didn’t cause you to miss the Downeaster! I wish Amtrak would run a shuttle bus between these stations, just to accommodate others that show up at the wrong station.
You all had a great trip. I've gone in the other direction and here's what happened: picked up the Crescent in Greenville SC and it took so long to get to NOL that we exchanged our coach seats for sleeper, although we didn't need one, got to NOL too late to do any sight seeing. Sunset Litd--so late that we saw alot of boring and somewhat seedy scenery and ended up not seeing much of the more interesting desert. Got off at Alpine TX so we could camp at Big Bend National Park--Sunset Ltd. so late we arrived in Tucson at midnight (check the schedule--8 PM). Fortunately had several days in Tucson. My wife flew back to North Carolina from PHX. I got back on the LTD (late). Supposed to get into LA at 5:30 got there at 4:30! Took me an hour to find a Denny's for breakfast. Beautiful station. I continued on the Coast Starlight( a GREAT train) to Oakland, spent the night with family, then went on to Portland (OR, that is). Now going North from Greenville on the Crescent is pretty terrible. At one time it was supposed to stop in Greenville at 11 PM but it was so late every day they changed it to 2:30 AM. I don't believe it has been on time one time in a hundred. Once you get on the tracks Amtrak owns as opposed to other railroads, where you have to deal with freights getting the right of way, everything just about is on time--from Charlottesville on to DC. Since I go to Boston and visit family there I stop for a few days, and on to Maine on the Downeaster. Two of my kids live in downeast Maine. I get off at the last stop, Brunswick, and they pick me up. Sweet ride. We/I were in sleepers all the way if you count the 15 hours on the Crescent. That turned out pretty good because we got three meals. In the old days I would take the Night Owl from DC to Boston--it runs overnight and had a sleeper. It looked like you all actually got a sleeper on that leg, during the day. Also the Acela, first class. I was not impressed except for the food and the single seat. Anyway I have taken Amtrak a lot--cross country on the Empire Builder, the Chief and the Sunset Ltd. I enjoy the train, always have (I'm 79) but don't expect to be on time and don't expect the equipment to always work right--yes, there are rattling doors, toilets that are out of order, diners that run short (what food there is, however, is always good). Before covid eating in the diner was a treat, not only because of the food but also because of the interesting people you meet, and I have met plenty of them.
We took the night train with OBB from Venice to Vienna, and I have to say, my hubby swore off night trains because of the misrepresented sleeping berth and the no hot water on the train, so no coffee in the am, not to mention 19 stops, ugh. No sleep, then 7 hours before airbnb check in after arrival, can you say ,meltdown....it happened 2 days later. Now after seeing this, he's reconsidering train travel.
Wonderful video. Loved it! Seinfeld is hilarious. I had some coupons to the Soup Nazi when I was in NY. I found his hovel-hole, broom closet and opened the door. He was sitting on a bucket and looked at me like he was going to harm me. Nope! I enjoy the peaceful background music so much more than the ratty-tat music playing through Baltimore, Philly, and New Jersey. I had to turn the volume down.
Hah, I kind of can't believe you didn't know about the South / North station thing! You should do a video on that, so other people aren't blindsighted trying to go North 🙂
Great video. I love that you stopped in New Orleans it's Mardi Gras on Tuesday. I love the food from New Orleans. My Mom was from Mississippi and used to cook both Cajun and Creole dishes.
Ah man...ya'll were right near my house in VA!!!!! If ya'll ever come to Northern VA fo a visit....you should have a subscriber meet up!!! That would be super fun!!! Enjoy your travels...enjoying your channels! Also..totally recognizing that view of Alex and Arlington...from my metro rides. LOL
Hi .... I'm from Maine....Hope you had fun and lobsta.... I live in Vegas now and I hope to travel by train to Maine someday then thru Canada back to the west coast.... Your vlogs are so helpful...Thanks and be well !
Oh nice,a trip to Maine. I’ll need to see if you did the northern trip back to Seattle. I watched the trip across Canada’s territories and that was fun. Just want to see Montana, idaho and Washington from the US side.
I'm actually in Cali so thanks for taking me cross country on Amtrak. I was looking for the Carolinas and Georgia. I've been by car, bus and plane. I'll be getting off in NY.😊 I have however been to the Northern states up to Maine. Enjoy.
I must have spent around ten nights total on Amtrak, all in sleepers, and loved it. Obviously the bedroom is the one to get but it's very expensive (less so when I took it way back), but the roomettes aren't that bad and there's enough public bathrooms and the one shower for everyone. You get all the meals included and of course the sights and sightseer lounge. Coach looks pretty nice too, especially the newer cars, but I've only taken Amtrak coach on short trips of 2-4 hours and never overnight. I'd think that the lack of a shower and just a few bathrooms for all those people could be an issue unless it's literally just one night. I do wish that they'd rethink their sleeper service and maybe make it more like the new Nightjet sleepers that are being rolled out in Europe, with a mix of one person "pods", cozy rooms for two with en suite bathrooms and showers much nicer than Amtraks, couchettes and deluxe bedrooms. It would make taking overnight trains more comfortable and accessible to more people and possibly even make a dent in airline travel which is such a huge contributor to climate change.
I love watching Amtrak Trip Video and Ride with Amtrak, and I normally take the Amtrak Cardinal Between Cincinnati, OH, and Philadelphia, PA. But I currently live in Bowling Green, KY, and there's no Amtrak or Greyhound Bus in Bowling Green, KY and I had to ask my Mother to Give me a Ride to Cincinnati, OH to Catch the Amtrak Cardinal by 3 AM. I am planning to make a video of Amtrak Train Trip for my TH-cam Channel
Watching the issue with feeding a dollar bill into the local bus, have you ever thought of getting a roll of dollar coins for just such occasions? I think public buses are just the sort of place that would still support them. Maybe a few could be kept in that tiny jeans pocket. Which I still call a "watch pocket" because I'm anachronistic by nature. 😎

Thank you. Beautiful train. This is one of the trains I will need to take to see my son in Maine. I will need to start in San Antonio, TX and travel east. I need to know if I need to travel first to New Orleans or do I need to go to Chicago to get the Downeaster?

Rob and Allie, I just booked travel from Rochester NY to Seattle, stopping for 2 days in Glacier. Took your advice and I'm staying in Chicago overnight as not to tempt the fates😃. I'm a single senior traveler. What hotel near Union Station do you recommend?
Two questions. First, if I sign up for the Amtrak credit card with the 20,000 points what would I end up paying for a roomett for 2 on the California Zephyr from Chicago to Emeryville after using the points? Second is do te offer low sodium meals?
How many days did it take you to get from Ca to Maine? I want to go to Maine and Vermont. I do not like to fly, but I don't know if I can handle so many hours in the train.
I just did that last week- the Downeaster, regional to DC, Capital Ltd. to Chicago, Empire Builder to the other Portland, Coast Starlight to Sacramento then east on the Zephyr to the Lakeshore Ltd back to Boston. Great trip.
I'm surprised about two things: 1) You guys took the long route from LA to Chi-town, and 2) You guys didn't e-mail me to give you a guided tour of Chicago.
32:07 "Manassas" is the correct spelling of the town name. At Charlottesville, VA, could have transferred to Amtrak's Northeast Regional and travel on that direct to Boston. 49:45 "Philadelphia" is the correct spelling.
It’s best to call 1800 USA rail and book we them. Also the futher away the trip is the cost will be cheaper since the cost increases every time someone books a seat in coach or a sleeper room.
