I wish I had a chunk of rock that big to whack on. We have no knappable stone where I live so I have to make do with landscaping rocks that I steal out of the rockgarden at Applebees
You just wasted that rock imo. Better prepared platforms and planned blows would've yield a bigger preform in the end. The flakes were good for ishi types, cahokia tribute points, and eccentrics (among many others..) they probably broke when you threw them down like that. You must have a ton of material available for such waste. And YES I'm jealous!
As always, your skill with your brand of bopper amazes me. I think you could make a bi-face out of a banana! I hope we get to see you finish that piece of rock! George in Ohio
So, do you have to use such an awkwardly massive bopper because the handle is hollow pvc and the cap isnt filled with lead? I've made my own boppers using the derlin and lead filled copper caps. I epoxy them together and for the most part they last quite a while, but eventually the caps come off. Does the duct tape/gorilla tape last? definitely seems like it'd be easier to fix than mine lol. Seems cheap enough and easy enough to at least give your boppers a try! Thanks for showing me another alternative!
3:27. Why in the hell did you throw that away!!!??? That was a near perfect Levellois flake point!!! With some slight pressure work with a small pebble hammer or a pointed bone billet you could have worked the base and had an amazing knife/spear tip.
Just because you let something fall to the ground doesnt mean you threw it away. As any knapper knows, you can only work on one piece of stone at a time. The flakes are fine. If the break when they fall then they wouldnt have held up to knapping further anyway. Would you prefer he hold every flake in his hand while he works his biface, or would you rather he sprout more arms and hands and work 4 stones at once?
i don't like slabs either, especially obsidian slabs, but seeing you go at the piece of buffalo river like that was nice. especially with the skill and speed which you did it at
The Early First Nation People would used that big piece of stone and made it into a cache because they lived so far away from the source of the stone. This is why, at site where you fine fire rock for a camp fire you see only small flakes of flint and many tools as well as the points.... And they used primitive tools like deer antler, bone and round small hard rocks to make the flint pieces.....Whats next electric tools with grinders and sanders...........
This video helps a lot, watching you work on a slab gives the viewer a better understanding of soft hammer percussion.
that is the biggest bopper i have ever seen. looks like it worked good. hope to see the finished blade soon thanks for sharing.

Kurt Sloop haha..I constantly search businesses, with any rock landscaping, to find knappable stone.
Sean Armstrong Wait landscaping rock can be knapped? I thought those round looking rocks would make much better hammerstones than actual material.
Sweet job! Biggest copper bopper I've seen, though I've seen that sized hammer stone used. Nice nice work!

I watch these videos after work for pure relaxation.

There was me thinking flint was only ever the dark grey glassy stuff!
Very interesting the kind of percussore used in copper,
you should try it with stones with the cortical to see if it works well?
Thank you

Amazing video 🤠🤠
Thanks!
how come that bopper sounds so hollow? I'm blown away at your skill. I'd overshoot every flake and end up with a drill lol
Jason1975ism probably plastic handle. Old handle probably broke and he made another
Great video but it hurts my soul every time I hear one of those perfect flakes shatter

See my bopper construction video.
Очень интересно, хочу научится этому замечательному исскуству спасибо вам.
очень сложная и сложная вещь, если вы живете в правильных частях россии, вы можете легко получить кремню, что является хорошим материалом для этого
Big caps are available at plumber suppliers/warehouses.
Ask a plumber where he gets his copper pipes and caps.
This must have been how they used to knapp back in the day! minus the copper of course (in some cases)
It triggers me every time he throws away those perfect flakes
same here
how do you even know if he threw em away? he just threw them on the ground
was looking for the comment section to see if i was maybe overreacting...
hearing them shatter...
where i clearly heard them break!
