    Thanks for the great, in-depth analysis. Bummer about the board, but not surprising I guess. On the other hand HUGE Congrats on 100k subs. Your content is fantastic, so it's well deserved. Actually you deserve 10x, but it's really great to see.

    When I was at high school we used to watch recorded programmes of tv shows. It was in black and white, from what I can remember about the recorder, it was reel to reel, big reels. They seemed at an angle to each other and not next to each other like an audio one. No idea of the make, but remember the other video recorder they had. Was a Philips 2000 I think, was a big machine with cassette style tapes, not reel to reel. And was in colour as well. Shame about the cracked board, but as you say must have been dropped or had a bang, or leaking caps.

    The V-cord cassettes look like 8 track cartridges but of course 8 track is a continuous loop of tape!

    Thanks for your great videos. I have a 1997 Canon UC4500E (purchased 1997) that plays 8mm tapes (video 8). I recorded only 10 tapes with this camera and the audio stopped working so I purchased a new handycam (MiniDV). I'm digitising the MiniDV tapes just fine but can't digitise the tapes from the older Canon because of the lack of audio. The tapes from the original Canon have good video but I have no audio at all. Not distorted audio, just nothing. I tried putting headphones into the Canon and also got no audio. It's the same lack of audio on all 10 tapes. Of course, they are the oldest tapes I have of my sons as toddlers and precious and I'm desperate to get the sound back.
    I assumed that my Canon had a problem with it's microphone so I got hold of a Sharp VL-630U which also plays video 8 tapes thinking that would play my tapes fine but that doesn't play my tapes either. In fact, in the Sharp I not only don't get audio but just get black and white static and a clicking noise from the camera. The Sharp came with it's own 8mm tape from it's original owner which played fine in the Sharp but just static and no audio in my Canon.
    Do you think this is a head alignment issue? Given the camera only every recorded 10 tapes I wouldn't have thought the head would have gone out of alignment that quickly. It was never dropped, banged or mishandled.
    If you think it is a misaligned head do you think I can do that myself. I'm good with tinkering and fixing things but just need to know what to do.
    Any help, thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    Well you gave it a good go, but i'ts foobarred as you might say.
    Buggered would be my word lol.
    Interesting to hear who did what with the formats.
    Betamax would have been a better format for quality, if sony wasnt so stubborn not to allow other companys to make beta machines.
    Philips made interesting machines n1500 and similar , i imagine it would be better than vhs, but it was too late i suppose.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sony did allow others to make betamax. Toshiba, sanyo and NEC all made their own machines. the big problem was the VHS manufacturers namely Panasonic and JVC were dumping their machines selling them for less than it cost to make them which is also what Panasonic did when they first brought their televisions to the USA they were selling TVs in the states cheaper than they were selling them in Japan which cost the domestic manufactures big time and eventually put them out of business. In 1979 and RCA branded VCR that was built by Panasonic sold in Canada for $2,000 a Sony betamax was $2,500 price is what killed beta because Sony was not willing to sell the units at a loss to compete with Panasonic and JVC

    Tough luck on that one,, and can't win them all :) would be really cool if you could show 2 things.. first,, the video signal as it is displayed on your scope,, and second,, How you pull those surface mount caps off of the boards the way you do without wrecking the traces,, That's the coolest thing I've ever seen!,,, :)

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The scope was filmed but cut from the final cut to keep things moving along. A patreon only release of this is coming showing the entire process and it will be long, as I shot a couple hours of video on this. There is more footage too as I did work on the board and thought I got it going but it only ran for a few hours before crapping out again after it was put together. I may put a part 2 up on that part of it, or just post it to patreon.

      watch the evs3000 and evc3 recorders to see how the caps are pulled. Basically just grab with pliers and twist them and they come right off.

      No tracking on 8mm. Auto track finding by means of pilot signal recorded on tape. Might be mechanical alignment issue.

    I recall Sears and another brand offering TV sets with V-Cord units built-in in 1974. Prerecorded tapes were offered but it sank like stone.
    More recently, a couple people I know got a V-Cord unit rebuilt and are using it to recover lost TV shows recorded back in the 70s.
    Back in the 70s I had several Sony commercials on 16MM film that a friend got from Doyle, Dane, Bernbach (now DDB) the advertising agency Sony used back then. They were witty ads boasting of the convenience of the Betamax units. One had Dracula telling how he missed TV shows because he "worked nights" but now he got to see it because of the VCR.
    The screw inside bit of this unit reminded me of the Akai portable units of the day - you couldn't get the tape out because the door was bolted from the inside. Akai's suggestion? Break it open and replace the cabinet afterward.

    The worlds first consumer Video tape cassette system was invented/developed by Philips for European market in 1971 and this system was called VCR. Sony's U-Matic was broadcast/Semi-Professional only at that time.
