why? the candlestick has 9 candles instead of 7
The Menorah in the temple had seven. A chanukah Menorah has eight, one for each night the oil in the temple continued burning until new oil was produced. The 9th candle is a shamas used to light the menorah and kept alight as a backup so that nobody uses the lights of the candles themselves as a source of light or heat.
