Fabulous video as always - thank you Valentina! I wondered if you would mention the post office because times... they are a changing - but there it was!
grazie a te per nuovo video. Il posto preferisco nella città è il parco. Un parco ho visitato quando a Roma era Giardini Nicola Calipari. Alle prosimo.
Hi Valentina. Could you clarify something please. My Italian teacher says you don’t need the definite article with teatro. So you would say “Andiamo a vedere uno spettacolo a teatro”. Interestingly my translation software (DeepL) also omits the definite article with theatre.
Un’ottima domanda, KC! This is one of those points of the Italian language that don’t have a sound grammar explanation, but are just a result of changes in the language from usage and customs. So, even though saying “a teatro” is the most common form, “al teatro” is inherently not wrong, and follows the normal pattern for places (al cinema, al ristorante, al parco…). Also, you will have to go back to the general rule of using the article if you are referring to a specific theatre, implicitly or explicitly, e.g. when naming it (andiamo al Teatro Massimo domani). So here’s my very pragmatic approach that I use with my students: if you are an upper intermediate or advanced student, and already have a good understanding of Italian prepositions, and are able to remember those exceptions, then great! Use “a teatro”. But if you are a beginner or lower intermediate and you are (understandingly) still struggling with all the complexities of Italian grammar, you don’t have to get stuck on this. Use the general pattern only (a+definite article) and you won’t be (really) wrong. Italian people will perfectly understand you (no risk of misunderstandings here) plus most of them won’t even notice! And you will be free to focus on more essential topics when you are still trying to getting the gist of this complex language😉
How to know if someone is asking a question or if he is just saying something because in italian it is quiet tricky if it is oral and not in written form..Can you please help me out.thanks
Buona domanda! We essentially change the intonation of the sentence, so you can tell the difference. I don't have a dedicated video, but often address this point in my phrases videos, like this one: th-cam.com/video/Mfe4eYzY_y0/w-d-xo.html

Did you grow up speaking English and Italian or did you learn English later?
I learned some basic grammar and vocabulary in high school, but mostly learned it on my own as an adult
