  • Chilli the French Bulldog/Boston Terrier has only the past 2 weeks has started chasing reflections of light and shadows. If you didn't know, this neurotic behaviour can be a huge challenge to stop once it has become gone on for too long.
    The video here was unfortunately not taken from the beginning of training this one, but Chilli was rushing at the light with some high intensity.
    This is how I have achieved this habit over time. Only a beginning step and does not solve the issue however we need to start somewhere :)

    My border collie stares at the grass even when its dark out, and he bolts off to the side like he is chasing a non-existent frog, and then circles back to do the same for about a minute or two before he runs off and paces back and forth while he waits for me. Its an obsession that he is doing nonstop until I pick up his rope or frisbee. What should I do?

    Is it actually bad for dogs to chase lights?
    My dog chases lights and stares at walls when something briefly reflects on them. She doesn't destroy the walls or furniture, and when a light is on a human she even sits there waiting for permission to snuff the light on their body, almost as if the light is a toy. Yet I keep seeing that it is dangerous or unhealthy for dogs to be obsessed with them. I've been using a laser pointer to play with her lately, but I didn't look up the fact people say it's dangerous until now.

      Hey yes can be very dangerous as dogs may not be able to control the light obsession and go crazy over it. Also when they start chasing shadows it can be very very stressful as they can't stop it

    My dog recently started doing the light and shadow chasing. It gets so bad sometimes his anxiety kicks in and he will start licking the walls and ground and whining. It seems like nothing helps. He always responds to our commands but as soon as we don't have his attention he goes right back to doing it. I've tried the commands and even covering up all the shiny objects in the room that cause reflection, but he is always searching for something. Is this a stage he will get over? or does this behavior need constant training? he looks like a lunatic most of the time just sitting staring at the ceiling lol. andi feel really bad for him that it consumes him. What do i do???

      Hey Roseanna, for me to explain through comments can be very hard as each situation will vary slightly. Where do you live?

    how would you stop a deaf dog doing this ?

    • @noochspooches25
      @noochspooches25  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Zoe Blything deaf dogs are more prone to chasing shadows and reflections. It will be a similar technique however you will need to replace "Yes" like in this video to a hand signal so that we can effectiviely counter condition and also setting up the environment so that there isn't too many shadows/reflections so that we can get better control of the situation. it's certainly not easy and no quick fix, but it's a good place to start. Any questions please contact me panos@noochspooches.com.au are you in Sydney?

      Dogs who shadow chase are under stimulated, and need a purpose and job to do. It depends on the breed of the dog, research what your dog is bred for and use that as a brain stimulation. Dogs who chase shadows need a job to do, redirect the dogs attention by bringing food to the nose and helping it to focus on something else. If that doesnt work try the dogs favorite toy. You want to correct the dog using body language and energy not so much sound since your dog is deaf it will learn faster because it will receive vibrations fast and the energy you project will have alot to do with getting your dog to stop. Practice using a leash all the way at the top of the neck, this gives you complete control over the dog.
