  • Wanted to share this step by step video on how to use the Celestron Starsense Autoalign. The manual explains this but some people are better at visual learning, So I did this video to help others who are completely new and don't know much about this stuff.

    Very clear instructions - can not wait to get my Starsense tomorrow to test it out! I see that there is a new Autoguide camera that looks more sleek - but is not compatible with my cheaper Celestron 130 SLT. I want to try this out to see if it makes my alignment process quicker...

    Me Celestron CPC 925 Edge HD has GPS already but its not the skysinc GPS it is built in. Will Starsense recognize that? My Starsense is arriving next week.

    Nice video sir, but I think you maybe should have waited for clear skies. It doesn't do much good if your trying to explain something that is not working.

      I don't know I think it's also good for people to know that it's really not gonna work if their is not a clear sky some might still try it

    is Starsense the same as Skyalign? Why 2 names for the same thing?

    • @MatthewHKnight
      @MatthewHKnight  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No they're not the same Starsense uses a camera that's made for only some Celestron computerized telescopes and won't work with other telescopes. Skyalign basically allows you to pick random stars you can see and based on the information you put into the controller like your location and date and time the controller will try and figure out what stars your picking. Starsense requires you to pretty much set the date and time and then your location and it will try to figure out the stars for you. However as mentioned if trees or light pollution are there it can be a problem for the camera.

    Thanks Mathew. Real helpful for me. I just purchased the Celestron 93973 Skyportal Wifi Module and will try the SkyPortal App. I hear this eliminates the need for the StarSense equipment. I like the idea of using my iPad to control the scope.

    I'd wait on Celestron to do a several things before buying one of these devices that are supposed to make using your scope so easy.
    First, for God's sake, make the display BIGGER! The display even has lower case letters and we're supposed to read this in the dark. How much would it cost to build a controller with a bigger display and to change the font to something larger?
    Next, the directions and manual suck. Okay, so hit enter and then, if you accept, hit back?! Who does that? Excuse me, but doesn't enter usually mean accept. And back means go back.
    Then there's the poor quality of the hand controller. Start with the cord. Much too short. What does telephone cord cost per foot? 5 cents, 10 cents? This thing cost 320 dollars and you can't be bothered to give us an extra foot of cord?
    Then, the controller. feels flimsy and I though it was poorly constructed. Mine is less than 3 months old and won't respond to the numbers 6 thru 0. What happened, did the guys in quality control take a break when these things were made? I'd not recommend not buying one of these until after Celestron fixes the product and makes the software user friendly. Celestron, you do know what user friendly means, don't you?

      Totally agree. The LCD is obsolete technology. I find it very difficult to read. The button layout is awful as are the buttons themselves. I can't hook the handset into the cradle because of the cable getting in the way. It's about time Celestron moved into the 21st century.

    As has already been said, your efforts in helping understand the StarSense alignment/setup are greatly appreciated but, as also already said, why put all this time and effort into a video that you know is going to show failed attempts and not show the readouts that you want to see after a successful alignment? Wait for a clear night so the viewers can see what they are supposed to see after successful procedures. Then you don't have to say "If this had been successful, etc, etc."

    Thanks for taking the time to make the video. I’ve ordered a new Celestron scope that includes StarSense. Since the skies here where I live aren’t usually really clear I hope It can find enough stars to align to.

    Hey man, I’m using the starsence auto align but it keeps saying “too few stars”. Is that a bad thing or good?

    • @MatthewHKnight
      @MatthewHKnight  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a bad thing either you've too much light pollution in your sky where the camera on starsense isn't able to see the stars, or you have some other kinda problem like objects blocking the sky, ex; trees ect..

    • @PsiSanic4201
      @PsiSanic4201 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matthew Knight hey, thanks for the help. But I was using it in my backyard and there’s not that much objects in the way and there was a lot of stars in the sky since it was super dark but my starsence keeps saying “too few stars”. Do you know what I’m doing wrong?

    • @MatthewHKnight
      @MatthewHKnight  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PsiSanic4201This may sound like a dumb question but you're taking the black cap off the front of Starsense right?

    • @PsiSanic4201
      @PsiSanic4201 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matthew Knight yes.

      Matthew Knight hey man, I just wanna say thank you. I found out how it didn’t work. It was because something was wrong in the system. And so I had to get a very new star Sense and it worked in seconds.

    i have used 1 of these for the past few months on the Sky prodigy 130 and had no trouble, now i have bought a new 1 for my Advanced GT mount and this has been a real pain. 1st problem..the Hand control didn't find the Telescope (meaning the mount), so i bought all the cables to update the Firmware on the Starsense, this too was a task, Right cables drivers ect are needed to update it via the CFM ( Celestron Firmware Manager) program. 2nd problem..the CFM took ages to find the HC/Camera but this program didn't find the mount either, after hours of trying the update it finally downloaded the new firmware but only for the Starsense and camera ( 6 files). 3 weeks later i still cant find any info on how to get the SSA the find my mount.....having said all that don't be put off it may work better on this kind of mount in the video rather than the mount i am using....any body reading this if you have any info on how to solve MY problem i would be very grateful :)

      Hiya Matthew,
      i have been there and received X amount of emails with links ect. some worked some didnt but they did help great with the cable drivers for Win 7 so i have saved them just incase lol....i still have to work out how to get the HC to recognize the mount.

    • @coolgui881

      firmware update of the mount? how old it is?

    • @vinsmith1731
      @vinsmith1731 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      i have seen posts dated back to 2012 so i assume the mount is old, but have also seen posts on successful updates so it is possible just not with me :( ... the reason i wanted the SS was to get the mount aligned as the original HC was way off the mark. it did point in the right part of the sky but was like 6" away or more (from view)....UPDATE..i did manage to update the SS and the orig HC so i know they are upto date.

      The advanced GT CG5 takes this part number cable to make starsense work correctly. Celestron Cable - StarSense-to-CG5 Adapter - 93923

    Hi Matt, don't you need to perform polar alignment for the mount first ?

    • @MatthewHKnight
      @MatthewHKnight  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      LuckieGuly na all you do is face the OTA as close to North as you can then the starsense will do the alignment for you that's the purpose of the starsense is that it does your alignment for you why you do something else. However it does need to be calibrated every time you set it up.

    Interested in purchasing, is it real difficult?

    • @MatthewHKnight
      @MatthewHKnight  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      R. Duck some stuff is a learning curve however all you need to do is follow the alignment as said in this video Celestron also made a video like this but didn't see it till after it was uploaded.
