Thank you for the explanation Dennis. It was very clear. Regards, Dave (p.s. no flickering that I could see)

One huge thank you Dennis for explaining how the valve circuits operate inside VVMs. Though I’ve a long way to go before I will be able to seriously think about resurrecting my LAEL VVM, manufactured in Milano, Italy, I now have some basic understanding on which I can further develop my knowledge, so much so I will be visiting the technical department at my local library to select appropriate reading.
There is one question that comes to mind: You mentioned the Wheatstone Bride, what similarities does that have with the Wien Bridge, and is it applicable to VVMs?
Also, sometime in the future, could you explain the operations of DC amplifiers? I’ve seen them in circuit diagrams but my understanding of their function, and the types of equipment they are incorporated, is not as advanced as I would like it to be. My requirement is to have a basic understanding of these types of amplifiers to be able to select appropriate reading from my local library.
    Once again, thank you Dennis.
    Regards, Phil.

Hi I have a 177 also and Im curious do you have a R40 and C8 in yours? I don't have them? Also the problem I have is , after applying AC the meter is slow to drop back to Zero. Any ideas? Thanks for all the info, really great!
