New Orleans is older than the state of Louisiana. Our culture (as evidenced in this video) is vastly different from the rest of Louisiana. Our linguistic influence is different from much of Louisiana besides the Southwest part of the state. We have always operated as a semi-autonomous zone with special laws, holidays (for example Mardi Gras didn't become a state of Louisiana holiday until the 90s but has been a holiday in New Orleans for a century), etc. We are different.
