My dad served in the Navy in WWII and brought back a knife from some engagement in the Pacific. In no way was it the caliber of a Randall Knife, certainly not "stick it in a tree" knife, but it represented to me the courage and sacrifice of American soldiers in the Pacific Theater during WWII.
I grew up listening to this and all of Clark’s songs. As an adult, my own father’s Randall knife sits on a shelf in my home. I wish everyday that I still had him, instead of that damned knife.
Whats really a pleasure is to hear all the positive accolades that each one of you have voiced. You wont see that on FB I dont care who its about. Thanks to all of you.......and yea, Guy Clark is a true American treasure.
Somehow and sometimes simple words and simple music convey a feeling that draws you into your own soul and in this case your own loss and maybe a tear .
This is true art. Without knowing any of the people involved in this story of the song- you know the inherent truth of it just by listening. Genius. And the message isn’t exactly tragic either- I mean it’s sad and will cause most to well up but it’s actually more profound than just sad, it’s meaningful and reflective and just… well perfect really.
Absolutely incredible, words are not enough to describe how fantastic Guy was & his songs are in a league of their own.As Guy said " It's about the holes you leave"
I saw Guy Clark's shirt,Suzanna' drawing of his shirt,on a record rack in 1995, I grabbed the vinyl, took it home , and wore it out. JERRY JEFF WAS RIGHT THIS WAS NOT GUY'S first anything.I miss those guys so much . BOB HILBURN MISSISSIPPI.

We will not see another songwriter like Guy Clark anytime soon. A true craftsman of his profession.
Colter Wall covered this song and I think he did pretty well

I shed a few tears with this song, so remind me of my father. One of my favorite songs by Guy Clark!

This is when music was music, and not the shlt you hear today.
This song always makes me cry
First time I saw Guy live was Houston Opry, Last time was Liberty Theater, Tyler with Verlon. Miss him often.
I felt this song...
The artists of the song and the artists of the Randall are worthy of each other.
If that don't bring a tear to your eye, I dunno.
What a great song.
Perfection.
