What about the SST that was built by Boeing/Marietta Martin in 1958 - and shared with Russians, French and English - which eventually becasme TU-144 and the Concorde?? Hmmm? the airframe was designed in America - by decided it was to expensive to support itself - Concorde proved that by losing billions!! Nothing to show? For every dollar spent - about $12 was returned in new technology/inventions - like air conditioners - batteries - air purifiers - computers - the list goes on and on!!!
How can you say that???? Do the engines make any difference at all??? And inside cabin noise means nothing - that is generally the engine placement - it is the outside noise that is the problem - Concorde was not allowed in most major airports due to 255db of outside noise (QC/16)- and 225db can break human ear drums. And QC/2 is the standard - and if you cannot get below that - you're in a Concorde!! A 747-400 is classed at QC/2.
Yes over here they say that GE and Prat-Whitney had 2 great engines - one with power - one with fuel efficency. So they combined them - made 2 engines - 1 with no power - bad fuel efficency - gave that one to Rolls-Royce and sold the GP7000 to Airbus!! The problem is simple Airbus thinks there is a market - Boeing does not!! Boeing bases this on over 50 747 sitting idle worldwide - figuring if you cannot fill a 747 - why would you buy an A380??? We'll see!! Best of luck to Airbus!
Calm down, BA was one of the target airlines for the A380, to sell it therefore had to conform to strict noise restrictions especially around Heathrow, it does that very very well. Even boeing admits that the 747-8 powered by the same engines as the 787 won't be that quiet. By the way, the A380 is as much an american plane as European, even the GP7000 were part built in good ole USA!
They are landing lights that direct pilot to center runway - most also have navagation beacon on them for automatic landing assist with planes radar. Do Eurpoeans just love loud noises??? With Concorde and A380 - they must be deaf by now?!?!?!?!?
Boeing killed the 747-400 themselves with the 777-300ER. Trust me, it wasn't b/c they couldn't sell any more. The 777-300ER burns a third less fuel and carries more cargo & almost as many people, if they hadn't built that awesome jet, they'd still be selling 747s.
It is by a few meters. A346 is the longest. AN-225 is the largest freight plane in the world, and the A380 is renowned for being the largest commercial airliner as of today. And I hate people -1 me for facts, it always happens!
@okeagle25 Boeing is now 10 years behind Airbus. Airlines that use the 747-400 will be looking to upgrade in the near future and it seems that A380 is the more popular choice. Airlines don't just want another 747 derivative. They want a completely new airliner. Now with the delays of 787, it seems A350 will enter the market 2-3 years after 787 which should make for an interesting market. A350 can also take advantage of building second making A350 with slightly better technologies than 787.
gankala ive followed the A380`s development from scratch up to watching it doing its first ever public display last week in liverpool in the hope that europe can claim to have the successor to the amazing 747 (yes i do support US aviation, but with the 747 who would`nt) and in my opinion and this is before your dream liner is put in service, i believe that the Airbus A380 will be the plane to succeed the boing 747. its nothing to do with bitter, i havent made a bitter statement, you have!!!!
Earthlinked. Who said the A380 was bought to replace concord? You seem to be easily confused. What do you mean by 'It took RR 30 years to make a quiet engine'? They built a very quiet engine over 30 years ago, the RB211. Rolls Royce have always been at the forefront of engine design, both civil and military. Their engines are lead engines on B787, A380, A350XWB etc. Kind of speaks for itself really.
Earthlinked. You appear to have a twisted view of aviation history. I don't mean to piss on your chips but Concord was exclusively British/French and the Tu144 'Concordski' was initially designed with the help of a huge espionage campaign but later redesigned with a compound delta wing and retractable foreplanes. Which airframe was designed in America? America shared nothing with Russia in 1958, certainly not aircraft tech, as they weren't exactly the best of friends.
Earthlinked.2 continued... The 747-400 may be QC2 on take off but it isn't QC0.5 on landing like the A380. You say 'inside cabin noise means nothing'. I beg to differ! I personally, and I'm sure many others, want it to be as quiet as possible inside the cabin, especially on long haul. I'd want to fly on the quietest, most comfortable plane, regardless of whether it's Airbus or Boeing.
@CostPlusTulsa Which´s the BEST Life Killing plane ever?: The Boeing 737= 5900 Casualties. Which´s the FASTEST Life Killing plane ever?: The Boeing 737= 2,5 casualties per month. There you have Boeing beating the competition...The Best and the Fastest all at ONCE. To save ur life...just avoid the KILLER 737.
xD Amen to that. Shame she doesn't fly anymore. God Bless Concorde!!! Anyway, I respect this a/c simply because it dare challenges the juggernaut that is the B747 and in my book goes above and beyond expectations. As far as favorites go, its a coin flip. They both perform their duties as they should so there's really none better than the other.
awesome.... Im flying out on SQ 2200hrs in early June from LHR, where is best for my family to park up and watch me leave? How do I find out which direction we will depart, and where is the best place it can be viewed? Security is understandably so tight these days no viewing areas are available. Can anyone help me please???
Earthlinked. You keep mentioning 747s in storage as a reason for there not being a market for the A380. The truth is, major airlines like new planes. Old ones are sold, leased, stored or scrapped. There will always be a (fluctuating) market for new planes. Surely, if Boeing can sell new 747s while old one sit idle then Airbus can sell A380s too.
Earthlinked. Of course engines make a difference. The latest generation of engines are the quietest yet. Yes, we all know about Concord. At least WE actually built an SST and successfully operated it for 30 years, until it's one and only accident. Unlike Boeing, who spent billions of taxpayer$ and ended up with nothing to show for it, except an expensive mock-up (B2707).
Earthlinked. Don't be stupid. You're either misinformed or deliberately trying to mislead - the A380 is one of the quietest, if not THE quietest, airliner in service at present, both inside and outside the cabin with QC2 for take off and QC0.5 for landing (boeing 747-8 expected to be QC2 and QC1 respectively).
by the way i wont comment on the dream liner till its in the air, i think that would be fair. unlike some nice chap on the A380 lands at LA for the first time clip, the plane hadnt even landed and you hear him say, " sure looks like euro trash". i mean how pre judgemental is that?????
i see where ya comin from but if that was the case, ya know the bigger the situation as you put it, why then has the 747 graced our skies so long with such an amazing safety record and lets face it, until the a380, it was the biggest passenger plane.
that would be because your american. i am british and i think the 747 has been the best thing since sliced bread howether it does have a rival now. and what a rival.
Her wingspan is about the length of a footbal field!!! My Uncle worked closely on the A380 project at Honewell Inc., so he tells us stories about her. I'm looking forward to seeing it fly into Toronto starting in June :D
wow, the wind was so strong! i've see the prototype land in Montreal and even though you cant see it in this video, the place was so silent!!! incredible
Good thing it's got 4 seriously powerful engines, I heard it would struggle but would still flu on 1 or 2 engines, which is still very good, in my opinion
The 747 is still the queen of the sky!
What about the SST that was built by Boeing/Marietta Martin in 1958 - and shared with Russians, French and English - which eventually becasme TU-144 and the Concorde?? that is an incredibly ugly plane! i dont get why everyone likes it! anyways that must have been a hard landing! crosswind and all!
great vid!

lvoe the cross wind landing. Ntotice how he uses the rudder and straightens up right before touch down.

A380 is actually much quieter than a 747, that's one of the reasons British Airways & air france baught it.
i see where ya comin from but if that was the case, ya know the bigger the situation as you put it, why then has the 747 graced our skies so long with such an amazing safety record and lets face it, until the a380, it was the biggest passenger plane.
you mean 'windshear' - and no there isn't any here - only crosswind which is quite normal.
damn black van driving in front of the camera just as the plane was touching down!!!
that would be because your american. i am british and i think the 747 has been the best thing since sliced bread howether it does have a rival now. and what a rival.
I agree with what you say about the 747 yes its old but the a380 is ugly as hell
No windshear in this video at all, this is a simple crosswind, might be a problem if aircraft weren't fitted with rudders but alas they are.
airbus 380 sucks big time....not just the americans but the rest of da world thinks.. no one can come close to the jumbo... long live da 747..
OMGLysses, Seems that game's all about money these days - look at the funds they poor into it, just on the balls!
Nice! Last time I went in that field I got butted by a horse. That kind of ruined a couple of shots.
Awesome engines. British are number one. Thank God A380 is not using those noisy cheap GE engines.
it looked like the pilot had some crosswind difficulties while approaching the runway
Concorde - the king of sky, and the 747 next to it. A380 is just a bit more metal.
dru4m. The only benefit the 747 freighter has over the 777 is it's opening nose.
y is it that wen the land they land bent a bit some 1 post it on my homepage
pilotkid - you muppet I hope for everyones sake you dont mean piloting one
Then you would never have any flights lol.
what are these poles? are they for ils or somthing? or runway lights
Mmmm, was crabbing due to crosswind.
boeing need a new plane not a new bodykit in a older plane..
Its shorter than the 747 you know. ;)
I watched this from the roof of Hounslow Police Station. Quite a sight at the time.
where is this place? which runway?
u can sware and curse.... but u knw truth is bitter....
airbus a380 is like the hmas dreadnought of the skies
pilotegarcon. So what? What do you want? A medal?
A lot of cross wind that day.
21 people hate airbus..:)
airbus engines seem to have a whining noise.
like a giant goose.
except wrong feathers.
wow i wish i was there
It's a cross wind land
I was on that plane.
Her wingspan is about the length of a footbal field!!! My Uncle worked closely on the A380 project at Honewell Inc., so he tells us stories about her. I'm looking forward to seeing it fly into Toronto starting in June :D
LOLZ !!! Nice one..
why dont you
if it is a Boeing im not going at all.
Nice crosswinds.
Major crosswind. Nice landing though!
Looks a bit like a 747 from the back
Is there any other kind at Heathrow.
ooohhh desynced sound :P
the noise was later than the plane
lol
You can almost see the landing.
Very nice video... Nice is this peacefull at the begining of the video, and... There he is! Big and beautifull... :)
When does it come into service
final aproach with crosswind
Thats one "big - ass plane".
That was cool! I thought i was gunna miss it cause of the car.
He did crosswing landing...
its that crosswind landing?
@FernandoEstebanEsteb true
wow, the wind was so strong! i've see the prototype land in Montreal and even though you cant see it in this video, the place was so silent!!! incredible
A hard crosswind landing.
look at that wingspannn
thats crazy I think I will go down to Heathrow one day just to look at them machines. Might see A380 if im lucky ;D
oohhh mmmyyyy gggoooooddddd!!!!!!
quite a big crosswind
wow....excellent....
Omg.. Air Drifting!
Good thing it's got 4 seriously powerful engines, I heard it would struggle but would still flu on 1 or 2 engines, which is still very good, in my opinion
dreamliner rules!
and a good one..
wow thats huge !
+10000
@Mr1tomas
thats heathrow for you, landing there is always a bit rough (or at least for me it has been anyway)
wow
lol
I think the footbal goal really is a landing assist light tower :)
i flew in the emirates A380 on the way to new york...It's freakin massive!!!! great vid:)
isn't there 2 ways to land in crosswind?? GREAT VIDEO THOUGH!!
her shear power and technology is sure very very impressive......so majestic
Woah! That is such a mass crosswind
suche giant
At that point is it under power or mainly gliding?
Rofl
Exactly!
