I finally received my Ifi Zen Stream. Suddenly we understood how this device works with its connections and different functions (I'm new to the world of streaming...), the sound reproduction is the equivalent of my records... and that even with my better versions in DSD or 24 bits. This is where this device really shines. It's true that with Tidal MQA via Denafrips Ares 2, Hegel H190, Focal Aria 926, I'm served to perfection. You are a bit the reason for my purchase, thank you. I must say that I was reluctant to come to the world of streaming, considering that it was a regression in terms of sound. I was mistaken. I compared a DSD version of Patricia Barber, Café Blue on my USB key plugged into the Ifi and the Tidal signal (not even MQA...) and the difference was minimal. I did the same thing with Diana Krall, Turn up the quiet in DSD vs MQA version... I couldn't really tell the two apart! From now on, the convenience and immense discotheque of streaming will outweigh the minimal sound difference. We got there!
The Ares II does not support MQA. How are you doing this with the Ares II? Myself, to play back a SACD in DSD natively I use a digital breakout box with my Oppo BDP-83 to strip the DSD signal out of the HDMI output to send that native DSD signal to my Ares II via coax, the sound is phenomenal. My CD playback, is also cleaner, I cannot tell the difference in tracks I play on the Oppo vs my 2021 Node which I run through the Denafrips Iris DDC via USB out to the Ares II via coax.
My plan was to wait for ifi to release their app for the Stream and then decide whether to get the Node or the Stream, but now it's a no brainer. Thanks guys!
@@r423fplip Both of these guys are very trustworthy and honest hey say it like it is of course they wanna make more money but that does not interfere with your true opinions
Mthks Adrian n Philip, I always valued yr opinions n enjoyed yr video. After watching yr video, I immediately upgraded my streaming source fm existing bluesound to tis Zen Stream. Very happy with it as audio upgrade is very considerable like u guys stated in yr video. Cheers.
Great review. Really enjoyed it. I have the Node 2 with a SF Line 1 preamp and an Adcom GFA 555. Using the built in dac, it was okay playing wireless, but when I went from a hard drive through the usb port and coax through my SF SFD MKII, it really came alive. Blue OS is the primary reason I went for the Node. It’s very intuitive and just works.
Loved this very candid and earnest appraisal . I have an upgraded Node but have now ordered the Ifi. Who wouldn’t after this ? Also, the gentleman on the right in white has an especially listenable voice that is both pleasant and relaxing/engaging . Great review, thank you
I am believer. These guys are on point! I own the new Bluesound Node N130 usb. I just put 20 hrs on the Zen stream and no joke the Zen totally destroys the Node! Thanks guys!😊
Hey guys, I've bought the ZenStream upon your advice and thank you. Although my comparison is an Audiolab 6000n, which is sadly enough very noisy, even after just unboxing the Zen Stream I can only concur with your findings. It is a really nice little device and it sounds amazing.
@@sainaveenbali The one I had introduced noise to the signal, 'jitter'. The best way to describe it is that you hear that it ain't right but its hard to say where exactly, it just ain't 'quiet'. There was no 'ease' in the Audiolab, the ZenStream did much better. The Zenstream improved dramatically after a custom PSU.
Great point at 11:58 If there’s one thing that holds the Node back it’s the cheap built in power supply. There are numerous options available to upgrade that shortcoming that really makes the Node rise to another level sound wise. I recently installed one from PD Creative on my Node (N130) It was cost effective, very easy and the sound change is very noticeable which was a win win for me. Does it put it to the level of the Zen? I don’t know as I’ve never heard it but if you’re a fan of ease of use of the BluOS interface and want a one box sub $1K streaming solution the Node is still a wonderful option……notably as it’s currently on sale for $100 off *Note: My understanding from other user reviews is the iFi Zen Stream no longer ships with the high quality iFi SMPSU and has been replaced by a generic SMPSU instead. I’m sure it will still sound great as the key is not having that built into the unit but the generic SMSPU is likely not as clean as the IFi unit it replaced so a slight degradation in sound might have occurred.
I have the Zen Stream and it sounds superb, a huge upgrade from a wired mac-usb-dac (including iFi’s signal cleaners) setup. And Tidal connect is by far the best sounding mode for operation, as it allows the audio stream to go directly from the internet to the streamer.
i have moved from the Bluesound node 2i to the ifi streamer and i like the ifi very much, nice open, powerful sound, using usb out into smsl vmv D1se dac.
Wow! I have a Bluesound Node 2i, and have been looking to upgrade to something that allows USB output. Was thinking it would be the newer version of the Bluesound Node, but from your review, sounds like the ifi ZenStream is the way to go. Would you recommend an upgraded separate power supply as well?
Hey Joshua! Obviously feel free to wait for a reply from the creators of a video, but if it helps, I'm actually doing a direct comparison of the Bluesound Node (newest version) and ifi Zen Stream in my own highly sensitive system (DAVE, Mscaler, Focal Utopia, etc). I cannot stress enough that the two outputs on the Zen Stream (USB vs Coax) are VERY different sounding. Note in the video they use the coax out. The coax out on the zen stream is fantastic, and clearly better than the BS Node coax out. The USB, however, is quite bad on the zen stream. One of the worst USB outputs I've heard. The BS Node has a better USB, though neither is spectacular. By better, I mean a blacker background and less digital "glare". Hope this helps!
@@zemessargs Hi Andris. Thanks for sharing your experience. That's quite odd about the USB output sounding bad. My understanding is that the USB with the right DAC should sound the best. I'm basing this understanding from this video by British Audiophile (th-cam.com/video/3tKWWs-OMxw/w-d-xo.html). So, hearing that the USB output is bad is disappointing - makes me want to hold off buying the Zen Stream. Have you thought about using something like a Denafrips Iris to turn the signal into an I squared signal before going into your DAC, assuming your DAC is compatible with that? That apparently is the best.
@@joshuaschneck I've thought about it, but am trying to avoid yet another box. I'd be more willing to spend more on an exceptional source streamer rather than add a digital-to-digital in the middle. For what it's worth, I also have a Chord 2go/2yu which has the best USB of the Zen Stream / BlueSound Node / Chord trio - but it's also WAY more expensive. But yeah, I'm bummed too about the Zen's USB. For context, I'd rank them about like this: Zen Coax: A, Chord Coax: A-, BSNode Coax: A-, Chord USB: B+, BSNode USB: C, Zen USB: D. I'm debating myself whether I want to keep the Zen, which has amazing coax performance, esp for that price point, but essentially sacrifice my ability/willingness to ever use USB from it. My alternate choice would be the Chord 2go/2yu, knowing it's the best USB and almost the best coax, but I have to always know I let the slightly better coax go...
@@zemessargs Here are my experiences after 1 hour with the device: Set up is indeed a bit confusing. You have to connect first via ethernet and update to the latest software before attempting to connect via wi-fi. The instructions and set up video should certainly be improved. Andris, you say the USB output from the Zen Stream didn't sound very good but that has not been my experience at all. Thank you so much for yet another outstanding review of a product in the "affordable zone". I had been looking for a streamer that would meet my needs and budget, and this streamer met both (and exceeded my requirements). I picked one up the other day and your reviews were spot on. Great work guys! "Subbed.... 👽✌️"
I have the new Node. Usually run it through DAC in my Marantz Ruby CD player, use Node’s DAC only for MQA on Tidal. Two questions. 1 Does the Zen easily stream Qobuz? 2 And if I purchase and install Roon on my iPad am I good to go with the Zen, or does Roon need to reside somewhere other than my iPad?
To use Roon, you need to run Roon Core in addition to the Roon Endpoint App on an iOS device like an iPad. Roon Core needs to reside on a "Server" - could be a desktop or laptop computer, could be something like a Linux NUC (Roon Nucleus is an example), could be an Innuos (Zenmini, Zen, Zenith, Statement). Otherwise, qobuz needs to be supported by the software you use to control the Zen Stream. We'll see what streaming services the upcoming ifi App supports.
Thanks Vilip, this is very helpful. I will look at the setup video, but it looks like in the absence of Roon, I would need to control the device from the Tidal app (and not be able to acces Qobuz).

Great review as always Guys. Just wanted to know what power supply you used with the ifi Zen streamer? Was it the 'iFi Power X' or 'iFi Elite' power supply or something else? Thanks
Can't comment on the node but purchased a Zen Stream and sent it back. Don't know if this was a poor sample but couldn't update the firmware - it just kept stalling at 40%, and wi-fi was really problematical - just very hit and miss. I normally use the SOtM S-200 into Mytek Booklyn Dac+ so when the Zen Stream worked is was the equal SQ wise of the SOtM but just not as stable.
Our demo unit was also stuck - until it wasn't - probably something to do with ifi - our demo now updated to 2.29.3 - they seemed to have worked out the install bottlenecks. You kinda have to stick with it and then be rewarded with an up-to-date Zen Stream. So, have a little patience.
@@vilipmak3973 Yeah well after 3 days of trying to update firmware unsuccessfully I ran out of patience. This was supposed to be a plug and play device. It may be a trivial cost in comparison to most of the other hi-fi kit you sell but to some of us £400 is still a sizeable sum of money for which we expect something that works out of the box.
Yea I had the same issue also the Zen would freeze or crash regularly. Roon although it worked was the only thing that did then came the latest update it basically killed the Zen so I sent it back for a full refund. It's flawed and software is really bad. Volumio has killed the basic software for this device and started again but Ifi has continued with it but it won't work. So no will not be patient with it it's supposed to work out of the box not at sometime in the future.
@@robintaylor3633 I went for a Node in the end and it works and sounds great. Only issue I have with it is the USB out is not functional awaiting firmware update. This seems to be a reoccurring problem with kit sold not fully developed.

Finally, a review that talks about the streaming section of the Node! All the reviews talk about combined streamer/DAC which we all know the DAC is workable but easily upgraded. I have three Nodes which I use with external DAC (via Coax) so I am very happy to hear a comparison of the streamer only. Well, sort of happy because it means I have to buy an ifi streamer now 😉
@@stephencosta6814 Multiroom buddy. Also hooked one Powernode, and 3 Rpi streamers ($65 each) running on Roon. Much better than my old Sonos 🙂 Music everywhere and one streamer hooked to a good system when its time to sit in a chair and enjoy 2 channel only and relax. Happy with Bluesound and Rpi but always looking for a “better” streamer that doesn’t cost a fortune for my critical listening system. Wallet already hurts enough with 7 zones playing in the house LoL 😆
Enjoy your bluesounds. I heard the ifi zen streamer vs the bluesound and the sound isn't that much different...minimal at best. And that minimal is very subjective.
I just bought the Node less than a week ago. I wanted a DAC since I didnt have one and didnt want to spend more than $500, I saw the streaming capabilities as a bonus. After getting home I realize, you cannot use the Node as a DAC. I cannot connect my laptop to the Node and play youtube through my stereo because the USB port on the Node is digital output only. I felt a bit cheated as that was the primary purpose. But as I started trying the BlueOS app with a Tidal test subscription, I really like the simplicity and easy access to music through the presets you can add, whereby you can just walk up to the Node and push one of the presets and it instantly starts playing that radio station or Tidal playlist. So I really like it and for the money it is probably a better deal than buying the Zen stream and a separate DAC for the same total budget. But it would be nice to hear how the internal DAC stacks against some external DACs, like for example SMSL M300. Or would the iFi Zen Stream + SMSL M300 sound significantly better than the Node?
Not too many reviews comparing the Node’s streamer section but luckily for you there are quite a few out there comparing it’s DAC. Never tried the M300 but did try quite a few. In my experience, I found it very hard to beat that internal DAC without spending more than $500. Otherwise you’re not really getting “better” but perhaps a sonic signature that you prefer or that suits your system better. For me until I got to a Burson or a Bifrost I can’t say that I saw improvements all around without some compromise.
@@audiorick841 Okay, I never tried any other DACs and frankly my system isnt very developed and my general experience of HIFI niether. For a pure DAC around the $4-500 range I understand that the Chord Mojo is highly regarded but I dont like the look and portability, I want something stationary that doesnt look like a toy. And I feel Bluesound made a much better looking product than the iFi as well. I was hoping to achive Chord Mojo DAC performance with some streaming capability as a bonus, do you have experience with the Mojo to make a comparison to the Nodes DAC?
@@bingoberra18 I have no experience with the mojo. I read that it is a fairly resolving DAC, The only experience I can share is that I made the mistake to pair an overly resolving DAC with resolving efficent speakers (PS audio Stellar with Tekton DI), it was too harsh on the top end. I had to reconfigure. All that to say I would also take in consideration the system you have, do you have a very mid and treble oriented amp and speakers. If the case, the mojo might be a bit much. Otherwise if you have a neutral or laid-back gear set up, the mojo might do well. Just a thought. On the other hand if you need some thing still resolving but a bit more laid-back I find my Modi Multibit and Bifrost are good. I run into an A B configuration the multi bit and the Node DAC. Slight difference but you really have to pay attention. At that price it’s hardly worth investing from Node to Modi. To Bifrost though easier to notice the improvement. If I needed more top end clarity I would try the mojo if my system was already pretty resolving I would try the Bifrost.
So i went to buy the ifi zen based on this review. But it has crackles when playing music and it was still there after the update. I returned it and listened to Jay and got my self a hifi Rose rs150 .
Summary: If you do have an external DAC, use Zen. But if you don't have an external DAC, the Bluesound Node is a great option that won't break the bank.
I use a Bluesound Node 2i connected to my Mytek Brooklyn DAC+ and it sounds wonderful. I subscribe to Tidal with MQA and Sirius XM. They both work great with BluOS. I also run ROON off an old Sony VAIO laptop. The Bluesound Node 2i is a great product and good enough for my old ears👍
Can someone tell me what ifi power supply and voltage should be used with the zen stream?? Ifi makes several at different voltages (9-15v) and it’s not clear from the zen stream specs which is best. Thanks!
But what about functionality? Which one works better and has more plug and go capabilities? If you stream amazon HD and quobuz exclusively which just works right out of the box and you can control with your phone or ipad without having to go bluetooth or airplay?
I have a basic question. We’re talking about just the digital streams but you guys are using the same adjectives such as warm, detail, quite etc. which are used for dacs, speakers, amplifiers, preamplifiers and so on. So at the end how do you know what is contributing to the final music?
We do have for sale ifi products in and around $1,000 (CAD). We like most of them. DACs at the $1,000 mark are hard to find for the store. I know, I know… what about this or that… a lot of that stuff is sold direct.
Hi Vilip and congrats for the video. Extremely interesting and helpful. Is it also possible to listen / access internet radio stations with this streamer? And if yes, how do I go about it? Thank you
You can play internet radio stations from the OS interface from the webpage. Also any of the 3rd party solutions like Roon or MConnect will access internet radio. The imminent ifi App should also be able to have internet radio streams.
@@vilipmak3973 I just want to tell you I am a big fan of yours I think you’re right on the money when you describe something and I have a very similar taste to yours music wise sound wise so your opinions really do matter a lot to me thank you for being there keep up the good work a big fan steve costello
Mobile phones also listen to you all the time. Try talking to someone on a random subject, take bbq’s for instance. It wont take long before all kinds of bbq adds will pop-up. That aside, do you know if the zen stream is airplay 2 compatible?
Your Roon Issue is more likely caused by your network infrastructure. If you use managed/smart network switch, enable Flow Control on the port used by Roon Endpoint. I would recommend using unmanaged network switch.
Yes - the top USB port can accommodate a formatted drive. The rest will depend on your software. It will interesting to see how ifi structures their app for playback of local files. The Volumio-based web page setup will allow you to catalog music files accessible to the Zen Stream. If you're referring to the Node, it can also be used in the same or similar ways.
I want to like the ifi so much. When it works the sound quality is amazing for the price. It's simple and straight forward with connections. There's no bells and whistles that you are forced to buy. We're the headache begins is the operation interphase. It's not simple like the blue sound node with it's app. Plus there is many random technical issues. Almost like the unit is malfunctioning at times. Also I couldn't connect to the ifi zen stream with my phone. Seems to be built for a computer on the same network. With fiber optic so common in many of today's electronics. Was shocked that the ifi zen stream didn't feature a toslink spdif output. The blue sound node seems to be a more well rounded unit. Pairs well with NAD power amplifiers.
@@vilipmak3973 I want to use the streamer together with my Hegel H360 and the integrated DAC. Would you still suggest the IFI Zen Stream as the best option for me.?
Doesn't do Qobuz though? I run my node 2i through my Emotiva stealth dc1 via coaxial input and it is more detailed and punchier. When MQA is streamed through the emotiva it says 88khz on the display so it seems to be playing the higher resolution signal? I don't know but it sounds better than the node 2i dac anyway.
Great video as usual. Have the Node2i and the Project Streambox Ultra. The latter sounds significantly better but you cant beat Blue OS for stability and ease of use. Would be interesting to hear how the Zen stream compares to the Streambox Ultra.
I own the Node, 2021... Only a few folks have heard it in my system, folks that haven't tell me I need to upgrade as the Node sounds like crap? It matches the sound I am getting out of my SACD/CD transport using a digital breakout box to strip the digital signal out of the HDMI cables sending it to the Ares II via coax, I can get the native DSD signal to my DAC using this method. The Node is running through the Denafrips Iris DDC via USB and then to the Ares II DAC via coax cable. I have Mogami W3082 wire and the Audioquest Cinnamon cables, I hear no difference between the two coaxial cables. And, it is easy to do SQ comparisons with the touch of a button on the Ares II. A bad recording on CD sounds like the same bad recording on the Node. A great recording sounds fantastic on both. I have A/B tested a few times, and hear no difference. So, does the Zen or the Node change the digital signature of the source material? The Zen is supposed to sound better, how exactly does this accomplish this? Or is it simply the connections on either units not being executed properly or better than the other? Poor quality control in the manufacturing process that changes the sound? I have had other streamers, they all sound the same to me, the Node replaced the extremely buggy Cambridge Audio CXN v2. SQ wise, they were both excellent, but I cannot say one sounded better than the other on my system. And I was not using either units internal DACs, as I am very sensitive to digital noise that these chip DACs produce. What am I missing? My system, Denafirps Iris DDC, Ares II, Hades preamp, Thallo amp, KLH Model 5 speakers. Oppo BDP-83 BD/SACD player as a transport, using the GeerFab digital breakout box. Node via USB to the Iris DDC and then out via coax to the Ares II. Two SVS SB3000 dialed in subs.
I'm curious, bought a zen blue when they came out for $128 us. I bypass the dac and use my sonnet dac. Reason was the streaming off my phone. What does this zen stream do that the zen blue doesn't for probably twice the price
Well, it bypasses your phone. It is a true streamer and not a Bluetooth receiver. If you like the way the Zen Blue sounds, you will be amazed with how much better the Zen Stream sounds. Bits are not just bits…
I have both. With a regulated PSU for both. It opens up the soundstage, clarity, and darker background. The n130 has a smoother sound signature and is paired well with system that has too many details and fatiguing.
I agree with both of you that the sound quality is great on ifi stream but there are also many glitches with the ifi stream...as a matter of fact I'm having to replace my ifi stream that I only had for a few days...it will not power up...🤪
What functions does zen stream add to Hegel h390, besides Room compatibility? Also does it somehow improve sound quality vs direct stream to Hegel h390? Trying to learn, since I feel like I can already stream directly from my ipad to the h390. Thank you.
Currently the H390 internal streamer is limited to 16-44. The Zen Stream and other external streamers can feed the H390's internal DAC higher resolution streams. And you're not streaming from your iPad - the iPad only acts as a control panel, a remote as it were.
@@vilipmak3973 why would it be limited? Through mconnect upnp it does a full mqa unfold even. But in general mconnect can send even 192 khz qobuz stream to it straight.
@@CoreProject05 The limitation is airplay or upup itself - there would be some downsampling - this is the unherent limitation of the built-in streamer as currently configured. Theoretically, this would be solved in the next firmware upgrade to Airplay 2 which can pass 24-192.
@@vilipmak3973 Then maybe my knowledge is not deep enough on this. On my H95 qobuz easily streams through upnp 192/24. I bought one of these 2 years late lol based on this video. It replaces an old outgoing Mac mini using optical. Honestly they sounds about the same. The zen with tidal vs the Mac with Apple Music is pretty close. The zen with tidal has a bit more detail is say the 7-10khz range. But the apple seems to have a bit harder impact in the 80-100hz range. Very close and splitting hairs. All in all I like the zen stream unit and plan to keep it as my Mac is very old now.
I have poor wifi strength in the Boonies Alaska and the BlueOS does NOT work well. So I bought an original Auralic Altier and it worked where BluOS did not. It gave me an opportunity to try to work with Bluesound support for a few months before getting rid of the Bluesound Node and Vault. It is not like Apple support where you simply call. You email Bluesound, then they try to help by trading emails. Of course days goes by when they give up and make an appointment to call you at home. From the Auralic, I learned that using Tidal is better not with the extra level of the BluOS app. I prefer to simply hard wire the iPad to a good dac to using the Bluesound.

I've done a lot of research and found that there ist no better bang/buck setup for me than the 2021 node. It works smoothly and vastly improve the sound on my system. sure, there is better stuff but it comes at steap prices. And the Software issues on the zen are a turnoff for me...
I’ll have read more about the Zen Stream and watch your review again but I don’t remember hearing either of you mention what phone, tablet or computer application to use for streaming Qobuz, Tidal etc on the Zen. The BlueSound BluOS is second only to Roon in my humble opinion and I haven’t had any issues that you’ve had when using Roon. Maybe this is because I use a Roon Nucleus as both the Roon Core and streamer. It’s connected to my router via Ethernet cable and the Nucleus is connected to my PS Audio GainCell DAC preamp via an AudioQuest carbon USB cable. Sounds wonderful. In fact if you have a Nucleus in the shop hard wire it to a router then connect it via USB to a DAC or integrated amp with an internal DAC. I bet doing this you’re uses with Roon will disappear.
I have a similar set up to you minus the Nucleus +6 other zones. I also had Roon instability issues until I hooked every endpoint to a LAN cable. Even if every end point’s wireless was showing full signal. As fantastic as the bluesound products are, I find that their wireless is not the best. Maybe they need a mesh system like Sonos LOL. And Roon is picky if one endpoint misses a single beat (or data packets should I say), it stops all zones. Once everything was hooked up to a LAN cable and dedicated Roon server (NUC) no more issue. Even using a Microsoft surface dial for volume control and it never fails. I have to say that Roon is seriously challenged by the “free” BluOS app. The only difference is that Roon doesn’t tie you to Bluesound/Nad products only. I read the Zen stream is RoonReady, may give it a try after this good review 🙂
Whatever control device we use is just that - a control device - none of the stream should be routed through them. So, obviously Roon. We also have MConnect HD available to use on our iPad. And Tidal Connect and Angus has Spotify Connect since he uses Spotify as well.
I've tested a Node 2i connected to an old H90 via coax. Tidal Connect in the Node yielded better results compared to Tidal using BluOS. Streaming directly from the H90 was clearly better than both, apparently because the integration of all parts and the power supply are better sorted out. Then I replaced the H90 by an H95. The quality of streaming is excellent. However, there are two shortcomings: I have to use MConnect to stream from Tidal and the volume level keeps changing on its own during playback (a real nuisance), when I'm doing something on the Iphone or even without any plausible reason. So, I'm thinking of buying an external streaming transport to connect to the H95. This review indicates that the Zen Stream would be a very good option but my previous experience with the Node tells me that it won't be so easy to beat the sound of the internal streamer in the H95. Has anyone tested the Lindeman Limetree Bridge II? it seems to be a superior option. Any thoughts? Thanks for the review
@@vitorgoncalves6289 did you buy or listen to any of these? I’m in the same shoes. The mconnect bug has been introduced with ios15. I’ve reported that 3x and they could not fix it+mconnect drains battery like crazy.
@@CoreProject05 my comments are based on hands-on experience. I also suspect the volume change during playback is associated with iOS 15. At first I also thought this was related to Mconnect but it also happens with Spotify (using Spotify Connect in the H95) or Apple Music (using Airplay). So, my guess is that it has to do with iOS 15 and Hegel Firmware. Anyway, I intend to buy the Zen Stream this week, hoping this will solve the problem and, hopefully, will improve the sound, as suggested in this video.
@@vitorgoncalves6289 Thanks! I'm receiving my ZS this week as well :) I'll compare it with the H95 via USB and/or coax. Ifi just said today, that in their latest beta fw, we can enable or disable MQA 1st unfold and Passthrough, which is a neat feature. Mconnect developers are simply not paying attention to feedbacks :(
@@CoreProject05 Thanks for the info. In that case, what would be better using the H95, 1st unfold or passthrough? I won't be able to test it until early January although I'm picking it up before the end of the year.
Ordered zen stream on 11.11 Been eyeing for a streamer for so long as ive been really annoyed with source (mainly laptop/desktop/ipad/phone) which lead to different sounding even with the same dac and amp
Well, It is your fault you guys, I bougth this unit and listen to it for these last few months....coming from Sono lended to me, it is night & day , it is as you mentioned a physical improvement, but you better have the amp and the rest of the system up to the level of this unit to realise it. Thanks for your video, actually the only one reliable I found, I am a happy camper, it is what I was after.
One of your best reviews that I have watched on your channel! Thank-you.
I wonder how the ifi Zen Stream compares to the Pro-ject Stream Box S2 Ultra. Intriguing....
Don't be so easily fooled by what these two sales men say.

Scusa la mia ignoranza, ma cosa vuol dire?
In pratica cosa hai fatto?
It is a really nice little device and it sounds amazing.
what do you mean by audiolab streamer being noisy???
@@sainaveenbali The one I had introduced noise to the signal, 'jitter'. The best way to describe it is that you hear that it ain't right but its hard to say where exactly, it just ain't 'quiet'. There was no 'ease' in the Audiolab, the ZenStream did much better. The Zenstream improved dramatically after a custom PSU.
@@edmaster3147 okie thanks for your reply. Now it's clear
Get a Linear Power Supply
Great point at 11:58
If there’s one thing that holds the Node back it’s the cheap built in power supply. There are numerous options available to upgrade that shortcoming that really makes the Node rise to another level sound wise. I recently installed one from PD Creative on my Node (N130) It was cost effective, very easy and the sound change is very noticeable which was a win win for me. Does it put it to the level of the Zen? I don’t know as I’ve never heard it but if you’re a fan of ease of use of the BluOS interface and want a one box sub $1K streaming solution the Node is still a wonderful option……notably as it’s currently on sale for $100 off
*Note: My understanding from other user reviews is the iFi Zen Stream no longer ships with the high quality iFi SMPSU and has been replaced by a generic SMPSU instead.
I have Roon and I don’t think it’s one size fits all.
Can you stream the music in your laptop with that Zen Stream?
I'm watching two years later, were you talking about the NEO streamer?
😮Thanks for an incredibly helpful review, gentlemen! ☑️ Zen Stream added to the wish list!
i have moved from the Bluesound node 2i to the ifi streamer and i like the ifi very much, nice open, powerful sound, using usb out into smsl vmv D1se dac.

I bought a zen on your review as I was considering the Node
I am looking for advice , what dac to use with the ifizen ?
I would recommend a Dac with an usb input. Any from Schiit from Bifrost up would do.
I put an ifi elite power supply with a decent power cable in front of the Zen Stream, HOLY CRAP, big surprise and improvment.

Finally, a review that talks about the streaming section of the Node!
All the reviews talk about combined streamer/DAC which we all know the DAC is workable but easily upgraded. I have three Nodes which I use with external DAC (via Coax) so I am very happy to hear a comparison of the streamer only.

The spdif coax input is the best comnection for the Zen stream??
Thanks!
They are updating the usb via automatic firmware. Suppose to be happening relatively soon.

Can someone tell me what ifi power supply and voltage should be used with the zen stream?? Ifi makes several at different voltages (9-15v) and it’s not clear from the zen stream specs which is best. Thanks!
I think 9v but google'it
But what about functionality? Which one works better and has more plug and go capabilities? If you stream amazon HD and quobuz exclusively which just works right out of the box and you can control with your phone or ipad without having to go bluetooth or airplay?
Thanks for great comparison of the two! Now, what usb cable did you use with the Zen Stream?
I have a basic question. We’re talking about just the digital streams but you guys are using the same adjectives such as warm, detail, quite etc. which are used for dacs, speakers, amplifiers, preamplifiers and so on. So at the end how do you know what is contributing to the final music?
👍I’m wondering did you guys do any comparisons on $1000 dacs would be beautiful to hear use talk about them
We do have for sale ifi products in and around $1,000 (CAD). We like most of them. DACs at the $1,000 mark are hard to find for the store. I know, I know… what about this or that… a lot of that stuff is sold direct.

I cannot find the Zen Stream as certified as a Roon endpoint under Roon partners nor under ifi. Ifi refers to the Zen Stream as Roon coming soon.
They don't update those web pages that regularly. The Zen Stream will update over the internet and Roon Bridge firmware will download and install.
How does the iFi Stream compare to the Hegel AirPlay?
It's better.
can one connect an external hd to this unit if its formatted with apple Itunes lossless files?- would like to stop using my mac mini for this purpose

I agree with both of you that the sound quality is great on ifi stream but there are also many glitches with the ifi stream...as a matter of fact I'm having to replace my ifi stream that I only had for a few days...it will not power up...🤪
Can you stream Qobuz with the zen stream in full resolution?
if you use the roon ready feature it will
What functions does zen stream add to Hegel h390, besides Room compatibility? Also does it somehow improve sound quality vs direct stream to Hegel h390? Trying to learn, since I feel like I can already stream directly from my ipad to the h390. Thank you.
Currently the H390 internal streamer is limited to 16-44. The Zen Stream and other external streamers can feed the H390's internal DAC higher resolution streams. And you're not streaming from your iPad - the iPad only acts as a control panel, a remote as it were.
@@vilipmak3973 thank you
@@vilipmak3973 why would it be limited? Through mconnect upnp it does a full mqa unfold even.
But in general mconnect can send even 192 khz qobuz stream to it straight.
@@CoreProject05 The limitation is airplay or upup itself - there would be some downsampling - this is the unherent limitation of the built-in streamer as currently configured. Theoretically, this would be solved in the next firmware upgrade to Airplay 2 which can pass 24-192.
@@vilipmak3973 Then maybe my knowledge is not deep enough on this. On my H95 qobuz easily streams through upnp 192/24. Even Anders from Hegel confirmed that upnp is not limited, only tidal to 24/48 since there is no 1st unfold. Airplay 2 is also limited at 24/48 ALAC, that does not bring quality improvement just convenience.
New fw..hah that’s questionable when..time flies pretty slowly at Hegel’s
Was looking for a U1 mini but after this review ordered the IFI Zen Stream. Should have by Friday. Replacing Node 2i. Update. It is very good and better than Node2i but honestly I’ve already had a lot of buggy connection issues.
i have had 2 Zen Streams in the last 3 months. they sound good, but in the both where returned. just buggy software loosing connections. IFI could have done a better job with these. misery loves company
Just wifi issues or wired? Thanks.
First time watching, as i'm only newly interested in buying my first streaming device. Your enthusiasm for the Zen is compelling. I wasn't really watching as you showed the Zen, and at the conclusion of the video, i went to your site to look at it and its price... and i was struck by just how ugly it is! This is just a product i would hate to have in my home/system. The "STREAM" font across the front just looks pathetic and cheap. Granted, i'm a designer, and i'm sensitive to such matters, but christ on a bike-what the hell? // So, now that we're approaching a year past this original video date, maybe there's another option? Better than the Bluesound Node, which i had been advised to purchase? And if i need a DAC to go along with this updated recommendation, could you note that, as well?
Why not I2S connection? :(
i bought 2 Zen streams and had to send back both to the retailer in Singapore. could not get it to to work without loosing the connection. tried for 2 months, but sounds great when it works. this product was brought to the market way to early, promised software still not delivered. insult to injury, TREO in Singapore wants to keep half of my money for a restocking fee!!! on a defective unit. beware Singapore is not the States. i have asked IFI to try and get my money back, but i am not holding my breath. miserable experience. can you guy's recommend something better? just need a transport. how would it compare to the Lumin U1 Mini? thanks
That’s it I’m buying one
Suck it up Angus , yellow is a great track too I'm definitely thinking of the Ifi Zen Stream but with a Linear Power Supply I think you two convinced sadly I'm in Aus
It's Roon, same issue in Atlanta as far as the hang up
I really don’t get it why some people pay for Roon ?
Why can’t you use the tidal Or Qobuz app
multiroom, local files+tidal+qobuz in one app, better metadata (search options)
Cheers🙏
OMG, finally someone that recognizes how unstable ROON is! I love the features but simply HATE how often it freezes. I can’t believe thery want $699 for the software when one can buy the Bluesound Node for $150 less!
That's why I bought the Node! I don't want the hassle. I also love how the Node comes with HDMI ARC for the TV. No streamer offers that under 1000€.
Just discovered your site. Subscribed. 👍
You guys dislike ROON!?? Have owned / used ROON essentially since very early release. Have 7 endpoints in home, two old notebooks running ROON Bridge and a SGC SonicTransporter as my server. Some endpoints are Wi-Fi and some are CAT5e hardwired through to 8-port routers. Absolutely no issues over the near 4 years. Surprised at your ROON challenges.
Thanks for this ifi video! 👍
I own both the Stream and a new Node. I have used the Node for my main system, the Stream for my headphone system. I may have to rethink this. The Stream is remarkably clean, very well built product.
you are so soft spoken, need to up the volume up a bit.
But isn’t the Zen a problem to actually use.
This is a great review! Are you guys going to compare the ifi with the Sotm Ultra? I understand they are from different price points! But as you guys thinks the zen stream is so good I’m just curious how would it compare to the sotm. Btw I do own the zen steam! 👍🏻
I imagine iFi has a dac in their lineup. Would the combination dac/ streamer be recommended?
The simple thing is to pair the Zen Stream with the ifi Zen DAC Signature. And also get a good digital cable (Coax or USB).
@@vilipmak3973 I'm using the Zen Stream with Tidal Connect, via Coax to the Hegel H95. Very happy with the sound (I use ethernet only). Do you think pairing the Stream with the Zen Dac Signature V2 would be an improvement to my current setting soundwise, other than adding MQA funcionality? Would it change the sound signature compared to the internal H95 Dac? Thank you so much for the review.
@@vitorgoncalves6289 It certainly would entail a good set of RCA interconnects. I have not A-B'ed the DAC in the H95 with the Zen Sig. And yes, the big get is full MQA unfolding with the full ifi rig. So you will get more and cost is not prohibitive. Part of the fun is to try.
They do have some dacs with the same face as zen streamer. I have a zen dac v2 and it is ok, but no remote so back to the phone.
I have the Hegel H190+Denafrips Ares 2 dac and i will buy the IfiZen Stream for the Tidal service that i will get free from a friend of mine. I copied my DSD and 24 bits records to him in exchange of this. Thanks for the video and for Tidal to get the MQA format.
Siri and Google also listen to you all the time (no cellphone???). I have just come to grips with there is no privicy.
I'm a finicky audiophile. The Zen Stream is the first component anyone should get acquiring a system, feeding Tidal to a $499 Pro-Ject Project prebox S2...the performance exceeds the Lumin T2 with modified power supply...people don't take the prebox S2 seriously...the MQA performance will convert skeptics. Mine was modified by stereo Dave's in Portland Oregon for a song... There's a reason stereophile has it as an A rated solution... See anything else A rated for $499. I'm telling you I lived with the Lumin for a while. If there is digital better than the iFi>Prebox combo, it's probably a matter of taste.
How is the music app accessing music? I read not as stable as Blusound.
I will buy this gear thank you
I agree! Zen=Pure Music!
As good as the Node is, there are better sounding pure streamers out there for less or a little more money. Some people get so defensive at the suggestion that there are better options out there.
With a sub out ! Great app ! a decent dac built in ! Which one do you recommend ?
@@r423fplip good point there. I was looking at a streaming bridge and getting a decent dac with it.
@@audiorick841 I have to say "not". BlueOS is stable, has lots of options, etc. AND it doesn't sound as good (as ROON). The sound is OK.
@@vilipmak3973 Agreed
I forgot to mention that the Limetree Bridge II costs twice as much as the Zen Stream
Ordered zen stream on 11.11
Been eyeing for a streamer for so long as ive been really annoyed with source (mainly laptop/desktop/ipad/phone) which lead to different sounding even with the same dac and amp
Zen Stream based on raspberry pi?
Yes. I believe so. I think developed by Volumino. I didnt like Voluminos interface, etc when I had it in my pi...especially on my phone.
Thumbs up for the freedom algorithm.
Roon works fine for me it is most likely the networking, I hard wire all my endpoints
Great video - Hope ya feel better Angus ( did you actually get the nickname "the Beef"? ) lol... Sounds like a great job over there =)
