This was a mech I ran in a Mechwarrior RPG. Its a solid machine that does nothing fancy like all the other troopers. The 47 version is the best and after dealing with clans it sported clan LRM launchers, and the Streak 2's were swapped with 4 Medium lasers with a targeting computer.
Hello Professor. Jason Andrews here. The Ghost Lions Legions use the Davion-made DV-8D quite extensively. The pair of Artemis enhanced LRM-15 racks putting out just over two minutes of firepower (16 salvos) at medium and long ranges. For close up firepower, the four ER Medium Lasers fill the bill nicely. This unit is found in the second line of battle in most cases, or even relegated to tertiary duty to 'guard the flanks', or hunt down enemy units that have somehow penetrated the battle lines. The movement rating of 5-8-5 means that the Mech is very mobile and able to deal with steep elevation changes, allowing it to maneuver almost unhindered by terrain features that would slow larger units or make maneuvering nearly impossible. Although still needing the support of a logistics train, the simplicity of the design makes reload times quite short and can be done 'in the field' with minimal tools and equipment. In a pinch, a tech crew could scale the Mech and mount a small crane to lift reloads up to the ammo bins, while also opening armor panels to allow the reloads to just slid into place to be locked into position. This is made all the easier by the incorporation of CASE into the Mech's design. Which, allows the techs to just open the rear of the CASE system and load ammo directly into the ammo bins before sealing the CASE panels back into place. If there is a Mech with hands, or one with an arm that can lift the reloads easily to the desired height, the reloading process is even faster. A DV-8D can be rearmed, repaired, and re-armored fairly easily and simply if a Mobile Field Repair Bay is available. Such a valuable unit would be supported by supply vehicles, staff housing vehicles, mobile tech workshops, and of course various offensive and defensive vehicles (tanks). Such a mobile repair facility is extremely valuable behind one's lines to deal with expected combat-damaged Mechs and get them 'back in action' as quickly as possible. Although there are various types of Mobile Repair Bays available out there, most mercenaries just build their own using the chassis of one of their heaviest tanks for all the support gantries and work platforms. The smarter Mercs also build them to be quickly deploy-able, and able to be 'knocked down' for high speed repositioning of their area of operations, and to make them fit inside their Drop Ships more easily. As for the 8D Dervish. Its very simplicity and ease of repair make it a beloved Mech of battlefield Techs everywhere. This ease of repair extends into battlefield repairs (especially if one has a Mobile Repair Bay). I have heard reports of a Dervish DV-8D having been repaired in the field several times before the unit pulled off world. It then underwent a full rebuild 'from the bones out', since about 40 percent of the basic endo-steel chassis had been replaced with 'standard' materials 'in field' to keep it operational. But even so, the Mech was out of the Techs hands in 'record' time, simply due to how easy it was to access various components and to rebuild in general 'from the ground up'. Nice overview of a completely adequate mech. Kinda missed your Periphery/Taurian aftermarket kit segment of how you'd make one, but it is a pretty solid design.
the only times I've been able to run a Dervish is in MW5 Mercenaries I'm waiting until the CGL IS Persuit Lance comes out on shelves as I didn't order it as part of my KS pledge
the dervish get's a lot of hate, but honestly I like it. it's a 55 ton attempt at a fast crusader. the problem however, is it came in a era before MML's drastically lowered the cost for entry on this concept. my preferrred variant however is the 8D, as it gives the mech a role as a extremely mobile catapult.
The problem is if you start min max optimizing every mech, youll end up with essentially the same (or very similar) weapon set with just different skins.
It is a shame the Treb is so great and the Dervish is so disappointing. A mech design that is essentially the Trebuchet but 5 tons heavier would find a home no doubt.
Replace the SRM 2s with 2 LRM 5s, downgrade the 10s to 5s. Get rid of 1 ton of reloads and replace the rest of the tonnage with armor. Now you have a real medium mech!(for extra fun either hotload or bring deadfire ammo. Blast em at close range then jump to safety!)
I might keep an eye on the Brotherhood of Randis for new Dervish designs, since the primitive version is one of the three Mechs that group can domestically produce. Granted, the only weapons the Brotherhood can make are seemingly missiles, but it’s also the one area where they’re beyond introtech.
Hello Professor HeyTeeEn. I have a friend who knows a man who knows a man who knows a man that steal mechs. He says that he got a real losttech Kintaro from Dracs. But it is full of Rocket Launchers instead of SRM's and it's legs actuators works weird. Is it ok to try buy it for my Nephew as first mech to run in our Planetary Militia or is it better to look for something else? P.S. Do you still get calls from Clan Geico Geckon about 15% lower rates for mechs insurance?
@@Ranalcus If the price is good on it, buy it. A mech is better than no mech at all. Bring it over the shop and we'll give it a double look over. Geico Gecko are trustworthy enough in the insurance game. Not Lloyd's of New London level, but good for what you pay for.
The Dervish is one of my least favorite medium Mechs. It has very limited combat value, it is not well designed and also does not look interesting. When looking for a medium fire support Mech I would always prefer the Whitworth, Trebuchet or Griffin. Even the mediocre Shadow Hawk offers more utility.
One of the first mechs I piloted. Surprisingly useful in a Panther heavy lance.

@@matthewmarek1467 The problem with this one is that most upgrades end up looking like the 7M, because that's about as good as it gets.
I strip the SRMs and add armor. It fixes this mechs's shortcomings almost completely.@@ProfessorHeyTeeEn

A design that probably at least in introtech should drop the SRM 2s and their Ammo for another 2 tons of armor and having 4 medium lasers

the 9D isn't terrible, if you replace the ERML's with a pair of MPL's. more accuracy, less range, and easier to manage the heat.
@@KeystoneCarcajou Replace the ER mediums with standard mediums, and it would still be better than Medium Pulse Lasers.

I just see it as necessary variation required for game to be more fun. Is it sub optimal? Yeah sure. But more different enemies to fight = more fun.
Agreed. It is a pretty poor medium. It just needs to drop the 4 tons of SRMs and ammo and replace it with armor, and it becomes a solid mech.
