The British monarch dropped in on John and Frances Canning with her husband Prince Philip just after the pair tied the knot at Manchester Town Hall.
The happy couple called the Windsors' surprise appearance "the best wedding present ever".
The Queen looked stylish in a matching pink linen and wool coat outfit, almost upstaging the bride.
She was visiting Manchester as part of her Diamond Jubilee tour to mark 60 years on the throne.

@Atul singh Rathoud It's called a curtsy and is a formal greeting for women. You can see the groom bow his head which is the male equivalent.
Technically, someone on behalf of the Queen wrote back that she wasn't coming, so I'd imagine the Queen was like "no you can't stop me from going" as soon as she realized there was a wedding.
If I were the bride, the queen could upstage me any time. She was the most magnificent woman who ever lived. A great woman sorely missed.

They didnt invite her as a joke. They literally sent a letter to her just to see if she would approve cause the queen had booked the same church as the couple.

christina1986ify Yes, I agree with you. I would only ever curtsey to Her Majesty because of my huge respect for her and how she has served our country as Head of State. However, I really wouldn't feel the need to bow or curtsey to any other members of the Royal Family. I met Princess Anne many years ago and didn't curtsey then.
Ann TwoShoes Meeting Princess Anne sounds pretty awesome! I met our First Lady, Michelle, at my college and I shook her hand an did a little bow. There's nothing that says you have to do anything when you meet a head of state in the US but it just felt...right? Even if I didn't vote for them. Just a respect thing, you know? I'd do it for any head of a country - even if I disagreed with their politics but Elizabeth has been around for so very long and seems invested in the well-being of those she's been Queen of that it just seems if I met her, I should do something more than shake her hand.

It's a great story which I only heard about this morning. But what occurred to me were regarding the folk getting married. Being in Australia there is a famous stock route in Western Australia known as the Canning Stock Route. Cattle would be driven by horseback from the Kimberleys down to Wiluna in the late 1800s until the early 1900s. The track was named after a famous W.A. surveyor named Alfred Canning. I wondered if there may have been a roundabout connection in the family tree between John Canning and him.
