These are my thoughts regarding those red ribbons that were tied around the trees; Well, as you all know, in Japan (especially in su*cide forests)--red ribbons were used by those people who were contemplating/attempting suicide. These ribbons serve as "marks," so if they change their minds, they can navigate their way out. However, if they decide to stay (end their lives), people can find the ribbon and eventually locate their b*dies. Therefore, it's possible that those people who hung their keys there were conveying a message that they intended to leave their possessions behind (after ending their own lives).
