It's just a rear-bias mode that has existed in AWD cars for decades. The only difference is that this car uses fairly aggressive torque-vectoring that it's able to spin the outside wheel even faster (making the car rotate even faster). Most people calling the "drift" mode a gimmick or "hold my beer mode" because they've seen the grand total of 2 popular videos of people crashing their RS in drift mode are unknowledgeable morons or butthurt STI owners. Calling drift mode garbage is like calling RWD garbage because some people guide their M3 on a tree while drifting. Go visit some owner forums of this car and watch way more people using drift mode correctly than crashing their car with it.
It makes sense because the RS does not have permanent 4wd. Since the rear axle driveline rotates faster than the front axle driveline, the track mode will only sometimes use one of the rear wheels for drive. Otherwise it would just eat the tires. In drift mode you are sliding anyway so the 4wd can send power more often to the rear wheels and actually to both rear wheels instead of only 1. this means more grip on the gravel.
Actually the car looks way better in drift mode on loose surfaces. All the videos I've seen with it on asphalt look half-assed but here it looks like a real rally car!
did u try Race Mode/Track Mode with the TCS and ESC all the way off? I find the RS is way more predictable in this mode then drift. It would be nice to see if these guys can confirm or deny this setup.
Which is why track mode was so much slower. Drift mode disables ESC if it wasn't obvious enough... If they disabled ESC in track mode it may have been even faster than drift mode.
Exactly. None of the modes fully disable ESC - you have to do it yourself. I'm surprised how many journalists don't think of that - even Ferrari only disabled it if you hold the manitino all the way to the offposition. Ford really went crazy with this car, but there is no way they were going to be allowed to give people two of four modes that have no safety mechanisms enabled on a car as easy to buy as this
anthonyd5189 correct, sliding only slows you down because the friction wastes energy, on a loose surface you can maintain your inertia much easier while sliding than on pavement.
@@zepter00 false, what you said only applies to pavement. Loose surfaces are completely different. On pavement slipping more than at a modest angle will make the tire loses grip fast, whereas on loose surfaces the angle is much greater and you lose far less grip. This means it's more beneficial to quickly point the car where you want it to go and push it out of the corner with the throttle. That ensures you carry the most exit speed.
Handbrake is for two things: slow speed drifts (typically for show) ... and amateurs who can't do it otherwise. At high speeds, you just need a good hard brake and you can easily get your car sideways. It's called weight transfer. You can do that at the entry of a turn and then drift all around it. Or you don't even use any form of brake at all. Just the right turns at the steering wheel is enough to drift. But of course this requires you to get a good feeling for the balance of your car first.
"Scandinavian flick" is just a fancy name for one type of weight transfer drift used by Scandinavian rally drivers. ~__~ Basically somebody said "what is liquid?" and you replied by saying "oil". Yes oil is a liquid but that's no answer to the question....
Ya but crashing off your skateboard is a lot different then crashing a car. The force of the impact will be significantly higher, that's why they have helmets for different things.
not surprised, but happy. Mines on order, so if people would stop hyping the crap out of it inticing ford to act like apple or nintendo making false exclusivity to sell more units.... I might actually see it sometime before 2047.
elielmendez Nah, that was a fake animation. The square doesn't move back and forth like that... you have to cycle through normal and sport to get back to track mode from drift, and the outer box moves first, then the inner fill-box follows it when you select a mode.
Except that this thing is performing faster laptimes across the board... It's getting pretty ridiculous that on every RS video there has to be a handfull of STI / Evo tards that have to affirm their blinding brand awareness with how their cars are the absolute AWD performance halo product and have been for years and nothing can even compare. Just watch the fucking footage and tell the world again how this car's AWD system is a pure gimmick because it's an on-demand system. Keep it real man, you people crack me up. I've owned an STi in the 2000s (GC8), it was a great car, had a blast. Today i have this car, that is great, and is a blast, end of fucking story. Learn to look to other brands, you'll live a fuller life as a car enthousiast. If not hey, Subaru will have a new STI soon enough, keep telling yourselves fallacious bullshit in the meantime for all i care.
ZenzDeluxe so tell how superior the rs is when track test show it less than a second faster than a 16 sti WITH 60hp more and not to mention a very straight heavy circuit. I was just pointing out the over hyped perfect of the car. Im a fan of the RS but its putting up numbers of car 13 yrs elder with less hp. But since you have to resort to showing your classiness with grade school tactics.... wheres you driving vids? How can anyone take your opinion seriously if you suck at driving.
This is what I don't get about Ford. I've driven two Ford vehicles - one a Fiesta all tricked out and one their little 4x4. The 4x4 sucked. I hated it.
*one* it has those rims on it so *nothing else matters* when it comes to Fun, Off Road, Devices, just *turn the page* in the book of ford, or forever be *the unforgiven* commenter on youtube
ford focus RS, perfect for drifting, but not supercars & hypercars like Bugatti Chiron, Marussia B2, Lamborghini veneno, & Pagani Zonda not perfect for drifting! sorry my friends try supercars & hypercars drift if you can sorry;-(

Ok so ill commute in drift mode when its snowing outside
If only most RS owners actually used Drift Mode for something like this, rather than just for having Hold My Beer crashes...
They just picked a bad name for it, they should've called it Rally mode or something.

I use mine in big open parking lots after or during a nice snowfall. Soooo much fun.

Jesus, that car looks *so good* doing that sort of thing!
Gets in Focus RS with rally driver. Leaves shit stains on passenger seat.
They did lol Wyatt is a rally driver lol
Actually the car looks way better in drift mode on loose surfaces. All the videos I've seen with it on asphalt look half-assed but here it looks like a real rally car!
A lot of times people forget to turn traction control off, drift mode doesn't seem anything special with traction control on, lol.
@@Jisker91It automatically disabled TCS, but it does leave ASM (stability control) on, which obviously neuters it as you said!
Mike looks genuinely terrified.

Credibility level is very high with your nice helmets guys. So sick! :)
the video editor Mr. Auslander literally means outsider/foreigner in German
You need to disable ESC to get the most out of the drive modes.
Which is why track mode was so much slower. Drift mode disables ESC if it wasn't obvious enough...
If they disabled ESC in track mode it may have been even faster than drift mode.
Drift mode puts esc in sport mode
Exactly. None of the modes fully disable ESC - you have to do it yourself.

SO jealous. I've wanted to go to Tim's school for a long time.
I saw you guys! I was in the one of the rally schools when you guys arrived. They wouldn't let us take out the RS. lol
Much better wheels then stock
Brilliant idea for a test!
best day at work ever!
omg looks like so much fun.. i'd love to buy this car for winter beater.. but beater cars shouldn't cost more than my " nice car" lol
No mention of the ESC setting? It makes a big difference.
Did you remember to turn off traction control? With it on its CONSTANTLY cutting power when on crazy slippery surfaces.
Street legal WRC car. Love it!
i kinda want to put an RS drivetrain into a GC8 Impreza... Sounds so cool.
Did you have to remove the brembos up front to fit those wheels?
Will it drift like that on drive mode ?
Did you turn off the esc?
That guy can kinda drive!
Terry Dolan the other dude was clenching his butthole the whole time lol
5 seconds faster because you had 5 seconds of wheel spin with track mode.
On a loose surface like that sliding around is typically going to be faster.
anthonyd5189 correct, sliding only slows you down because the friction wastes energy, on a loose surface you can maintain your inertia much easier while sliding than on pavement.
anthonyd5189 sliding around never will make you faster. Modern WRC drivers less as paoible even on gravel, snow, ice.

Drift mode. When you can't kick the back out in a normal car..
If you think AWD cars can't go sideways on dry tarmac, you're doing it wrong.
JohnNeal619 ever heard of a Scandinavian flick? Or this strange thing called a handbrake

Holly fuck this was fun. but my focus rs is park in the garage over the winter
"I buy a rally car so it can sit inside and do nothing but collect dust"
Drpoppler i have a ford rs2000 4x4 for winter fun.
Love the Zoolander reference.
I'd love to see it compete and judge it's performance within its class. Or just drive it myself.
I thought you had to hold a button down for 5 seconds AFTER going into drift mode to fully unleash it.
i think the screen images were simulated
7 miles on the odo and you're driving it like this? Makes sense
The dashboard clip is from an ofiicial video
Build a project car!
big man looked like he was dreaming of a toilet seat
I was going to buy one but they said i had to wait 4 months for it to arrive . bought a sti instead
I waited almost a year, but it was completely worth it. STI was my second choice for sure though.
Best choice anyway
Nice helmet
I know eh...skateboarding helmets are really gonna save ya when you flip the car after you hit a run and overcook the corner ending upside down.
yes they will bud ;) those helmets are made for upsidedown, headforward things anyway.
Ya but crashing off your skateboard is a lot different then crashing a car. The force of the impact will be significantly higher, that's why they have helmets for different things.
depends bc you can get pretty fast. ever heard of longboarding?
if not search "longboard downhill" and watch the first vid
They probably could have called "Drift mode" "Dirt Rally Mode". On a made road though, I guess track mode would be quicker?
Select drift, then disable ESC ;)
I wonder if i can brink my RS here.
who else is looking forward to doing this in forza horizon 3 on 12.13.2016 ?
SidewaysGrempf is that an arcade game?
it^s an xbox one game
SidewaysGrempf
Not quite correct. It's a Microsoft platform game, any Windows 10 PC can play it was well.

000007 miles
That was stock footage from Ford. Part of their marketing material.
holy shit man.....
initial d was right!!
Havel The Wall
No. Initial D was on pavement, and on pavement a grip run is always faster.
7 Miles OMG... If I buy a Focus, I hope do that when he has at least 5000 miles... You will broke it...
I want to marry this car and have its babies. Think my wife will object?
1:16 wtf only 7 miles and its already getting beat lol. Not that I wouldnt do the same.
