What amazes me is that this was a 17 yr old girl who had no real life experiences to draw on and she gave one of the most historic scenes ever in a soap opera. Rape is not a “sexual act” but a crime. She screamed no, her clothes were torn, she snuck away in shame (though the shame should be his), and literally nothing about this scene should be “erotic” if you aren’t into rape.
For the life of me, I don't understand why this episode from 1979 still exists when it was told that all those old shows were taped over and don't exist anymore. Where did SoapNet get this full episode from if that were the case? In fact, SoapNet showed a handful of old GH episodes from 1979 and 1980 . . . how can that be if they taped over all the episodes? Are there more in the vault at ABC that we don't know about? Oh how I would love to see all of 1979 and 1980!
Still a knockout! I missed the big rape episode but we were all onboard for years afterwards. I was a teenaged boy. We all kept waiting for more magic... But it seemed like the producers were actively trying to downplay Luke and Laura to some degree? Over years, they reduced them as a thing to nothing. Then tried to revitalize the magic by getting them back together during the long overdue wedding season. I was glad to see they reintroduced the issues in the later years. But by then, most of us were long gone. It still fascinates on some very human level that touches us all. Anyone whose felt the sting of unrequited love, of forbidden love, and of deeply tragic obsession and ultimate humiliation knows exactly what I'm talking about. Luke's taking of Laura had so many interesting emotionally charged issues underlying that it could be explored for years without exhaustion.
I was a young teen when this came out. I did not realize that a man could force himself on a woman. It was unnerving. I did not know what "Rape" was at that age
I guess they really had to end the possibility of Luke coming back. Having him killed in Austria, having him with Tracey Quartermaine, having the whole thing turned into rape and Metoo again. I'll always remember my neighbors Mom turning me onto GH at 13 years old. But I'll always remember the storyline as it being so adventurous and two love torn people always meant to be. But Anthony Geary deserved a life beyond the soap opera. Sad it took so long and another country to find peace.
LOL how many mother-in-law's casually call at 3 in the morning to see how things are not knowing that they're not in bed asleep or that he just came in the door none of this questioned that many years ago
It’s amazing at how much is going on there at 3am 😂😂 And no mother-in-law would casually call at that time unless it was an emergency. And that conversation wasn’t an emergency.
He couldn’t pick her up from work, because of the “Corcurien” Lawsuit; at 2:30 AM?? He didn’t even try to drive around to go and find her!? That must’ve been one hell of a lawsuit! 🤨
Been watching all day. Anthony Geary and Genie Francis did an outstanding job with the rape scene. That had to take a couple of takes to get it right. And now Luke and Laura will be together as soon as he dumps Jennifer Smith. Don't even like that girl.
This is when I started watching GH the rape scene i was a CBS soap fan a disco music fan also so that got my attention i guess the other soaps got boring i guess
They made a huge mistake by having Laura to fall in love with a rapist. They never should have turned Luke into that person especially with the chemistry they obviously had.
Man remember this episode when i was four years old he rape her at that bar at late at night he got her pregnant these are the greatest episodes of all time happy birthday 🎉🎈🎂 to General 🎆 Hospital i love how anthony geary and genie francis made gh very entertaining.
We know it is. Truth is, this storyline is full of inconsistencies. Later on in this saga, it is talked about as rape not seduction. It is worth watching for appreciating the skills of the actors and everyone involved in this production, in my opinion. I've enjoyed it immensely. If I dwell on the rape aspect it's not enjoyable anymore. Maybe you shouldn't watch it if it bothers you. Some people just like to be outraged.
What he did was wrong, but it was a tragic mistake, he never intended to hurt her, and he truly got confused about what was happening. He proved he loved her many times by risking his life to protect her. I hate how people equate it to some cold calculating criminal act.
Wow ! The scene of Laura running in the woods torn blouse mascara running to a more demonic rendition of " rise" song Luke was raping Laura to. Seeing her in the park after the rape is very hard to say it was a " seduction" does Laura look like she enjoyed that?? I will say the writing was intense the acting as well & it wouldn't be so interesting if it wasn't controversial. Abc soaps were rocking in 79 the same year u had Karen wolek on the stand played by Judith licht admitting she was a hooker housewife married to the town doctor! What intense great writing. No wonder soaps blew up big time in the late 70s & 80s to a golden Era. I know soaps wife around forever & popular but 79 esp the l&l story had from what I've read grabbed all audiences. The writers never intended for them to be a couple but seems by the time they wrote this they had an idea how popular the pair was already. Cause if Luke was supposed to be killed off right after why wasn't he. I think writers actors & fans all are owners of a story & how ot goes & it's lightning in a bottle. I'm sure Luke was only brought on as a spoiler to scotty/laura/bobbie as that was the triangle. Bobbie of course brought big brother Luke to mess w/ Scott & laura cause bobbie wanted scottie. Anyway obviously writters have 3 weeks ahead to write to get a script out & film. So I have to believe they knew the buzz l&l were already getting. So the rape may have been a let's wait & see situation. That's all I can gather cause if Luke was supposed to die right after he would have as villains usually are penned to do. So I have a feeling it was written as it went & to see fan reaction. Watching old clips before the rape it seems like it was unnessarary as they were friends. As laura says here. Maybe the writers thought do the rape & as it's where they intended & were waiting to see how it played out. Obviously fans were riveted & killing off Luke would have killed ratings & fan interest. So to me it's really a " life of its own story " I don't think the writers knew how they'd blow up to the mainstream their wedding was rivaling Charles & di ! 30 million viewers during the daytime is insanity. Honestly Luke winding up w/ laura at least for Years off screen & when they returned is interesting. I think the times had changed & by the late 90s when this was revisited they had to now triple back & make l&l destroyed by making Luke wind up saying Tracey was the love of his life & lucky suddenly by 2010 was burning down his family home & Luke wad this dead beat dad to lucky suddenly which he wasn't. He raised lucky everyday w/ love & they rewrote the story again to fit the times that l&l were a horror story that laura had forced Luke into some nightmare of domesticated life & lucky was acting as if it was a horrid childhood of his delusional mom forcing his dad into some distorted suburban nightmare. Thats not the vibe u get at all from 93 to 96 when l&l return & offscreen last seen they were reunited expecting baby lucky & 10 years later we are shown the 3 are a very happy family. Then the cassadines returned * don't get me wrong loved that story as I started watching at that time & helena & Stefan were my faves* l&l got trivialize to a nightmare. If they wanted them to be a nightmare then had it be that after the rape. Not after were shown they married had lucky then years later added lulu. They were a happy family from what I saw. Lucky idolized Luke. Luke was def the cool dad. Like I said times changed & then they had to then " fix" what was done in 79. To Me I ft it was very sad that the rape they moved past had to then turn l&l into some horrible family when again that's not at all what was actually shown in 93 when we first meet lucky & are told they've been this happy trio for 10 years continuing to at least 96. I think l&l were still together as a happy family tested w/ the revelation of Nikolas being Laura's first born by Stavros. So OK the marriage went bad but lucky talking for years how Luke was this horrible dad & dead beat miserably trapped in Laura's white picket fence life as he hated it just wasn't so. That's how it goes as soaps are unending & u get new writers new ideas. I get hea on a soap sadly doesn't happen. Then the irony is when u see soaps cancelled then they race to reunite certain couples as hea when they have cheated had several marriages since kids by others etc. So I get it l&l split but the rewriting of at least the family they made w/ lucky was horrible.
This storyline is an excellent example of the wrongheadedness of some soap writers/viewers. Luke raped Laura. And there's no escaping that. It wasn't a seduction. She didn't subconsciously want him to do this. She said "no" several times. No woman deserves this. There's no excuse for his actions. He may not have "meant" to hurt her. But he did in one of the most heinous ways a man can. But some viewers say "oh, pair them up. They have such chemistry!" Or stories of those fan events Tony Geary went to where some fans yelled "Rape me Luke!" And of course, Gloria Monty claiming it was a seduction. Sure, this was in 1979. Different times. And yet, there's currently a storyline on another soap which may pair a woman with the man who used the fake death of her newborn baby to marry her, etc. And once again some soap fans say pair them up, they have such chemistry. In the cases of Luke & Laura, and the current soap storyline, all the writers needed to do was give things more forethought and NOT have Luke rape Laura, and not have the male character on the current soap do what he did, and BOTH pairings might've been just as popular/asked for, if not more. Of course, what am I saying? Because Luke & Laura are one of THE most popular pairings in soap opera history. Their wedding was a ratings coup. "Don't take it so seriously, it's only a soap." Don't the writers, producers and actors want their work to be taken seriously? What a crazy world we live in when a form watched by more women than men produces misogynist storylines and they're wildly applauded by that same audience. .....and yes Tony Geary and Genie Francis were wonderful in this scene and are marvelous actors. I've been a Genie Francis fan since her first scene on GH. I wish they had never gone down this route. My hunch on why they never won an Emmy for this is because of the nature of the storyline. Unlike other GH viewers, I was happy they revisited this after Elizabeth Webber was raped.
I remember when Luke and Laura. Laura was working at the Campus Disco. That nigjt Scotty forgot to pick up Laura. Laura was still at the Disco amd it was still 2;30 a.m. And Luke was telling Laura to go home Luke was drunk and he was in love with Laura. Luke confused to Laura that would be dead in a month. Laura was upset and Luke told her to leave. Just leave. She said Let's call the police. Luke said Just leave. Damn it Laura I am in love with you. I think I better leave. I want to hold you in my arms and make love to you. When I think of you on Scotty's making love to you I go insane. If I have to die I want to dance with you one more time. He put the music on and said Dance with me. She said mo. And then Luke raped her.
Please remember this was a long, long time ago! All soaps dealt with human frailty, infidelity, schemes, and yes even rape. This is what made us all watch. Luke was a flawed human being and Laura loved him anyway, isn't that the definition of love???

Old school😉
Rape is not a “sexual act” but a crime. She screamed no, her clothes were torn, she snuck away in shame (though the shame should be his), and literally nothing about this scene should be “erotic” if you aren’t into rape.
That was “Rise”from Herb Alpert not Chuck Mangione. His song was”Feels So Good from the year before, 1978.
I love this shit!
I love Joe and Anne together.
That music is spooky.
No it isn't.
thanks
I did not know what
"Rape" was at that age
What a heavy scene of Laura getting raped by Luke. This was so sad and heartbreaking. 😢 I love the music playing! I love 70's music.
The first time I seen it on TH-cam about 7 or 8 years ago I cried too for Laura she was so innocent 😢
He couldn’t pick her up from work, because of the “Corcurien” Lawsuit; at 2:30 AM?? He didn’t even try to drive around to go and find her!? That must’ve been one hell of a lawsuit! 🤨
I remember the scene with phone ringing during the rape it was haunting knowing it's Scotty on the phone
No one says “quarrel” any more.
Does anyone know anywhere to find episodes with Alex Quartermaine (Renee Anderson)?
What’s baffling to me is that they actually had her fall in love with her rapist. Truly some disturbing writing going on there.
Argh I can’t get past the dialing on the phone 😂
I miss those days before cell phones much better
Is there any footage Laura's first episodes when Lesley first found her with the Vinings?
Wow is there? I would have loved to watch that store line. WOW thank u Rosie.
Wow I forgot all about that.
This happened when I was a kid… even then I couldn’t understand how they could build a “super couple “ on that foundation. And was never a Luke fan.
They made a huge mistake by having Laura to fall in love with a rapist. They never should have turned Luke into that person especially with the chemistry they obviously had.
I have watched this scene a few times but THIS channel doesn't have the audio synced with the scenes. Quite distracting.
I noticed Luke had on a wedding ring, was he married to someone before Laura, does anyone know
No. It is said the ring was his mothers I think.
Why did they kill soap operas before quarantine?!
Man remember this episode when i was four years old he rape her at that bar at late at night he got her pregnant these are the greatest episodes of all time happy birthday 🎉🎈🎂 to General 🎆 Hospital i love how anthony geary and genie francis made gh very entertaining.
She screamed NO several times! It WAS rape! Anyone who says otherwise are disgusting! How would you feel if your 17 yr old "child" were raped? Smfh
Who is the guy at the end that Laura sees in the woods by the bench?
A cop found her in the park. Check ‘After The Terrible Night’ series of vids. Very important.
What he did was wrong, but it was a tragic mistake, he never intended to hurt her, and he truly got confused about what was happening. He proved he loved her many times by risking his life to protect her. I hate how people equate it to some cold calculating criminal act.
Thank you!
Sandy Juntunen ....i so agree with you.
Yes it was rape! Those who say it wasn't have never gone through that themselves. Sick and disgusting to think people didnt or dont see that. Sad...
100% agree Sandy
When a woman says no and the man forces himself on her it's rape.
Great scene, but the lips and the soundtrack are out of sync.
Gotta love Tony even though he always overacted
And Luke was telling Laura to go home
Luke was drunk and he was in love with Laura.
@@michellecahill1433It’s more like the definition of rape culture.
@@michellecahill1433 correct. And it does explore the idea of forgiveness and redemption. He treated her well for a long time afterwards. Risked his life for her. Literally stood in front of her as a gun was pointing at him/them.
luke was a sick person
The character was flawed!!! And Tony Geary played him perfectly!!! ❤❤❤
@@michellecahill1433No he didn't.
Why did they have to make it a rape scene? Couldn't they just have made it an affair?
How in the world do you land a job at 17? Must be looks. I sure don't have it. Why didn't her parents help her out with therapy?
