The only problem I have is whenever I win the ball back, the opponent knocks my player off balance as they stumble. Then they recover faster while my player just stands there like a potato, unable to be selected. It's bloody frustrating.
I destroyed 3 controllers because of this reason in ranked matchs

One thing that is really important when defending is using super cancel to position your Central Backs in front o the Central Forwards during goal kicks. That way you'll win most of the headings in long balls.
This video has improved my game so much! I only thought the super cancel was useful for breaking out of dribble moves. I had no idea how beneficial it is on defense. I'm actually gaining possession of the ball now instead of just hitting it and the opponent getting it right back. Excellent tutorial. This is such a great game, I can't see myself going back to FIFA anytime soon.

This is roughly how I've been defending. It's not that different to how I approach it on 2019 either, cause I hate the sweaty bumrush style lol. But it has to be much more refined now, like you show. Great tutorial :)

Your first example of how to do it correctly is exactly how I defend, but seriously in 99% of cases my defender becomes an onion immediately after the tackle, the opponent stumbles but still gets back to the ball before I can get near it, as if there's an invisible shield or something. It's really weird and it happens consistently.
Hmm that's odd lol. Sometimes you need to back off if they retrieve it as per one of the examples near the end
Half my tackles give the ball straight back to the opponent. I'm useless at this game, just seems harder to score as well

@@tsteed97 you're not alone. None of these work for me because the ai shields it every time I get close. Only way I win the ball is extreme aggression (I'll either lose stamina and win ball or get booked) or by running into the ball (luckily) and pressing x. The slide tackle example show ends in fk 90% of the time (my lack of skill may be at fault there)
The ai has really made this game unenjoyable. Don't get me started on fouls too!
That said spooney is doing great work here. But I think it's worth saying that [I believe] these tactics don't work on different skill levels. Play on amateur, and it's an entirely different coding going on... at least it seems it!

Great tutorials, Spooney! I get frustrated from time to time as the game is difficult for me. There are many skills to be mastered at the same time, e.g. tactics, dribbling, positioning, tackling, etc. However, looks like it's possible to make progress and I have a feeling I'm getting better :) thanks to your tutorials. It takes time though. It's not a game one can master and win easily at the highest level after a few days of playing...

These vids are helpful. How do you outstrength players when you're dribbling with the ball because I might be doing it wrong? Sometimes I'm dribbling with Pogba and I'm getting outmuscled by smaller players..

Great stuff as always I love your passion for the game and your effort in helping others be able to enjoy the game fully. Sid you notice that there is seemingly no way to 'knock-on' the ball anymore, which used to be useful to increase shot and pass accuracy and allow for dip shots and rising shots. Dpn't like that at all, I feel as if this 'new' finesse dribbling has caused morel imitation than it offers anything new or good and it makes a lot of things feel cumbersome compared to before. Pulling off skill moves was tricky enough as it was, now we gotta hold R2 on top of everything for a lot of them as well? Sheesh, it is not a good descision I hope they either scrap it and realize they messed up or at least offer an option for keeping it similar to 2019 for the release of the full game . Also having to hold R1 for half a second to come to a full stop is shitty compared to just quickly tapping R2 in PES 2019, it was more intuitive and fast. Any thoughts on this whole thing?
Hard to disagree, it is frustrating as you said holding an extra button to use skills. The rising shot doesn't need the knock-on but everything else you said is correct. They won't change it now...just hope they change it back for PES 2021

Don't forget strategy... Try defensive strategy. Aggressive means they will be pulled out of position.

I tried your method, but the ref always give me foul when the AI stumble even for the smallest stumble. And how to beat the AI when they shield the ball? It seems that even the smaller AI player can outpower a bigger player easily
You have to get goal side. I win the ball cleanly every time now. As for shielding, tutorial coming on that mate

Super cancel is the same for classic and alternate controls. The two systems basically switch the R1/R2 functions over, but since you're using both to super cancel, it's all the same.

Of course it is useful. My practice is to apply markings, so as my defenders will stay close to the player they mark, so as to have easy secondary mark and be in position to cut the ball more easy. But it's just my style, everyone can use whatever applies to his gamestyle. Cheers, dude, see you again.
Only downside with that approach, in my experience, is how defenders your AI defenders play all the attackers onside, stretching the gap between the lines as they do. It's bad enough at doing that already lol. Do you experience that?
@@janguvpes7518 , yes, sometimes. It is important to have the right defender applied to the right attacker, ex. low back for low for, high back for high for, so as to outplay the attacker by outfast, out-turn or out-jump. Also, to have the right foot, so as not to "eat" dribbles. But nothing is absolutely perfect, as sometimes I lose in 1v1.
Because of this guy, everyone in PES 2020 is so damn good. Even 500 rank players know how to do everything and play so well. So frustrating to play against.

do you have advice on what to do against a player who is shielding the ball? holing x or tapping wont let me muscle them off the ball, double tap x is 99% of the time a foul. any suggestions? the ai or human controled can get the ball off me so i must be doing something wrong :/
Same here. EVERY time I get close the ai shields (and still dribbles) and either beats me or passes around me. It takes 3 men to win the ball and that's if I'm lucky not to concede a foul. Yet every single time I'm in the reverse situation, ai tackling is at 99, or they just take me out. This game is flat out broken like that and I'm hoping the next update fixes it. But I'm not holding my breath.

This game, if you're not super skilled at it, feels very punishing. Really poorly done. If I'm honest I'm not sure they'll even bother fixing it but I hope I'm wrong.
That said the defending spooney says about using super cancel and jockey.... It's fiddly and quite tricky but it does work. I've lowered the difficulty for now and actually got 2 free kicks (in a position that counts) (after being taken out about 5 times lol). Problem is I was walking the goals in and it got boring! I wish there was a difficulty between amatuer and (whatever the next one is called).
all of your tutorials are useful,and really makes me play the game a little bit better(i am playing pes 20 for five days),but i do think that dlc 5.0 made it unplayable even with all those tricks.I am playing with little teams on master league(depor,nottingham,salernitana,aberdeen,only salernitana on professional,the other ones at top player level),and even with all those super cancel stuff,I don't always manage to win.The game this year is super laggy,unresponsive.

Is there a way to pull player back on PES? We can call it pulling from a shirt (i'm not talking about double A, foul one) or locking rival. On FIFA it was done with pushing B (shoot) button easily. On PES other players and strong AI can do it all the time but i cannot find a way to do it and it really ruins my gameplay. That's why i just can play with crossing pass lanes etc. impossible to play close against their offensive players. My player just chasing if he is close; no aggression, no pressure, nothing. I'm using secondary buttons; so my shoot is B and pass with A. I'll be so glad if u may help me. Thanks.
No pulling shirts in PES mate. Players will come together and there will be a strength battle (based on balance and strength stats).

I'm playing game in different language so im trying to translate it on a right way. On the game analysis at the start of the match; all my rivals favorite defensive move is "from behind pressure"!!! Mine is crossing and sliding! How to make behind pressure; how??? I'm picking thestrongest players to play and other players beating me like im playing with kids, how? My players just running forward to opponent and chasing him, that's all! Or i have to pull with double A or with one A for tackle; i wanna pull, hold or make pressure! And there is no button for this! Then how others dong it with all their players, how? Anyway.. impossible for me to find the answer.
Spoony in my Club what is a good formation and what tactics should i use with it? For begin now i use Fischer as coach with deep defence row. Its good but offensiv its hard for create chances.
451 with counter attack. Support range around 5, defensive line 4 or 5, aggressive and all out defence. Short pass. As close to that as you can get I guess

Im conceding a hell lot of goals.my opponents cut through my defence like it isnt there. their passing is always spot on while i struggle to break through their defence. Is playing possession football the reason why? Better to play counter attacking?
Try counter attack - there is no preference. Depends on how you want to play and what suits you and your players best.
Counter always seems better for me, and you can still play many slow build-up passes. Just give you more options. Well for me anyways

@@SpoonyPizzas I'm playing PES 2020. When you go to "Club Performance" in Master league, there is place to check player results. You can see "strength in the air", "low pass", "lofted pass", "cross", and "shots" success rates. One of the columns is "Block". And everyone of my players has 0. It's crazy because I've got both Bonucci (vicious defender) and Boateng in my lineup.

Why are all these super cancels necessary?
Btw, the "free" slide tackle can also be achieved with the manual (left trigger) button.
Because it gives you complete freedom. If you want to become a pro or get better... You've got to build it into your game. Otherwise your player will start running behind the ball/opposition player and get stuck behind.

Spoony, I'm following this tackling tutorial and it's working alot better than how i was tackling,but when im still winning the ball clearly a slight touch it's a freekick all the time and it's pissing me off lol. Do you think they will patch this when full game gets released.
I hope they don't mate...it stops people holding X down and charging in like a rhino. You have to get goal side, wait for the attacking player to make a mistake and then take the ball. As you would IRL. You dive in IRL and a decent player would go around you

Online super cancel doesn't work for cancelling passes. Everything else...it's even more important. Look at this tackling video or my online training session video!

coming from fifa i find it hard to not just be able to do a standing tackle when i want to.
Can you explain (if you can) why super cancel is even necessary? Why do I have to press 2 extra buttons, just to tell the game "yes, I REALLY do want to go that way"... and then release at just the right time, then reapply (I noticed you pulsing it, I do the same)... It feels like trying to play Paganini on the top buttons. Why do they make moving across the field so confusing? And why does the AI wrap the player's legs around like that? Why can't the devs just leave well enough alone?! Sorry...

When I play online...players rush on the me as soon as I recieve the ball. 2 or three players on me the instant I recieve the ball. How do I get my players the to close down so aggressively?

Dont matter in pes2020 you'll get a foul most the time, it's been pussyfied
play narrow and defence line must be high ( level 8 both) use gegenpress and false 9 just like liverpool. also counter target and wing rotation could use
. it makes too much mistakes to your opponents. tactical understanding much more important than using joypad.
I test it and it only works if they are more incline to attack
Defending in PES is so vague and hard to understand, I'm pretty sure tapping or holding the pressure button doesn't help with blocking shots, or rather it helps if the shot is directly towards the defender but won't help if the player has to reach to deflect the shot. Also it feels like the purpose of pressing X/A is to initiate shoulder to shoulder attack, reaching to take away the ball is done automatically in all instances and you can only force it with a double tap of X/A. All of those however are just suspicions because it's really hard to confirm it since players always act differently.
Two things I'm completely certain about tho:
1. Sliding tackles get modified depending on whether you are holding R1/RB, R2/RT or nothing. Holding the jokey button actually allows you to perform sliding tackles that can take away the ball from opponents that are close to the ball, something the other two types of sliding tackles can't because they will always trigger a foul unless the opponent kicked the ball towards the tackle. It's a complete gamechanger and it probably worked on previous version of the game but I'm too lazy to try.
2. When clearing a loose ball it's really important to hold one direction steady during the entire animation. That will ensure that the defender will not try to trap the ball and that he will apply good power behind the clear. I'm pretty certain holding the run button makes the clear even stronger, but holding the direction steady is extremely important.
Please test those two things and when you see that they are true, make a video about them because more people have to know about it. It's completely retarded that Konami are hiding so much about the game and people suck at it and don't understand why. This game would've been so much more popular if people knew how much modifiers there is to each move and how to manipulate them.

It'll give you full control over a players position, rather than them taking a more direct A to B approach (which isn't what you want if you're trying to cover angles defensively).

No worries mate. Check out "ultimate weapon tutorial" for super cancel and jockeying is a term used in football where you face your opponent more or less facing him but gradually move backwards and sideways. Hold R2 to perform.
