Just the other day, I booted up my Wii U (where I had transferred the contents of my Wii to) to see what was on it, and saw Pokmon Ranch, and went into it, and the first thing was Hayley telling me she hadn't seen me in 15 years.
The reason you had to save the game when switching boxes in the early generations - and, indeed, why boxes existed at all - was because there literally wasn't room to keep all the stored Pokémon in active memory. Saving when switching boxes literally moves the box data between SRAM banks. Those early games were a _marvel_ of mad engineering.
Lanette is so goated, not only does she give us great UI for the boxes, but she also goes out of her way to fill her entire house with servers so we can get 30 pokemon per box, effetively giving us 50% more storage for absolutely free. Proton Drive could learn something from this lady and give us actually sane storage plans
@@silverhetch3383 I agree, although with a caveat. Bill invented moving in his second PC iteration, although his algorithm was kinda bad; you had to save the game upon each move. Lanette optimised the code and moving hasn't really changed ever since, yellow magic hand and all. Definitely based enough to mention
@@silverhetch3383 Also Move pokemon was called Move pokemon w/o mail what's up with your variable names Bill, just put that in a comment or on a label inside the menu.

Genuinely surprised Poké Pelago from Sun/Moon/US/UM wasn’t mentioned. It made me want to actually want to catch Pokémon BECAUSE of what it rewarded: seeing Pokémon in your boxes actually doing stuff AND being rewarded for filling those boxes with upgrades for the islands.
Revisiting my old copies of Moon and Ultra Moon earlier this year felt rewarding partially because of exactly this: getting to see all of my Pokémon just hanging around and having a good time.
in hindsight, I think you're right! I have had something in mind for a while doing a collection/history of those types of extra non battle features cause I really want to give them special attention. I was personally quite taken with pokejobs when swsh came out! probably should have mentioned them here though, hope I can make it up to yall soon with a deep focus
Pelago was so fuckin handy. I loved that I could level grind while I was in high school and get evolutions taken care of. No, I never used it for my team, the game was easy enough. Also, I have 999 of every berry in both Moon and Ultra Moon, just because I can!
Poke Pelago was one of my favorite things in SM/USUM! Both incredibly useful in many aspects and also so charming to be able to see your stored Pokemon just hanging out in the islands.
I enjoy that Legends Arceus flavors the storage as pastures, since you can't digitize and store them in a traditional system. You even can see your pokemon when you pass by the pasture area, since it picks a few at random to display each time you go back to the village.
An idea for a sequel bouncing in my head is just bringing over all of your pokemon from Arceus, but you'd have to go back to Hisui to get them. Like, you have a new region to explore with its own pokemon, but the pastures are separate.
the biggest problem with the modern solutions is that you aren't a little Mii running around a farm. they really should have considered that in their future designs
when i first played diamon and was told my pokemon was sent to someones pc, i was wondering who the hell stole my pokemon and when id be able to track them down
OMG this just made me cackle that's so funny, it doesn't help that they would go "who is someone you might ask? well let's just leave that to your journey, okay. heheheh"
For all the problems I have with Pokemon Home-and the series in general post-Dexit announcement-the whole "movesets are per game instead of kept consistent" thing is actually something I'm pretty okay with I mean don't get me wrong, it is really annoying to have any hoops I may have jumped through to get a 'mons moveset in the first place be thrown into the bin and get told "Start over", or worse, have to rethink the moveset from scratch because some moves are just straight up gone now [godspeed Return and Pursuit, you will forever be missed] _However,_ transfer-only moves were basically the original "pay-to-win" problem of the series, and one that was only getting worse and worse as time passes because for folks who came in late, if they decided they wanted to build a team and a 'mon or two needed a transfer move, that player'd be in a rough spot, especially if they didn't own the game and console the move is from, as well as at least one game each and every console _between_ both games so they could actually transfer up Like, obviously an extreme example, but if someone needed a transfer-only move from Gen3, they'd need at minimum: A DSlite, the target Gen3 game, a Gen4 game, a Gen5 game, a 3DS, and either a Gen6 or Gen7 game And all that without mentioning that if transfer-only moves were actually still a thing, then when Bank's life-support plug is pulled, new players are just inherently disadvantaged against long time players through no fault of their own other than "Should've been here sooner lmao" TL;DR - Per game movesets are honestly pretty fine in the grand scheme of things, annoying as they are at face value
Great video! I'm surprised you ddin't mention Pokepelago in Sun and Moon where your pokemon actually get to hang out on an island or the pokejobs in Sword and Shield where they can work part time for you, I thought those were both pretty interesting things. Especially Pokepelago in how the guy who runs it is connected to the whole family drama going on in the main story.
Literally this meme I saw once with the timmy's parents riding the scalators image "We've been arranging Pokémon in boxes for 3 hours, when does the fun begin?" "THIS is the fun!!"
I think my favorite storage is Pokemon Stadium 2, which allows you to transfer items between Gen 1 games using the Color Case. You can even put drinks in their to skip Rock Tunnel in later playthroughs.
I like HOME, but I wish: -The switch version didn't lack so many features that the mobile version has (gts, 3d models, etc) -There was a Ranch like DLC that we could buy that turned HOME from a spreadsheet simulator to a living, thriving safari where we could hang out with our mons in a true "home" -The GTS had more moderation bc years later people can still ask for impossible trades like an alolan graveler from legends arceus -Lastly, that they released a DS/GBA/GBC? cart reader that connected directly to your switch that let you transfer mons right into home. Closing BANK to those that didn't have a paid plan really sucks, so if they're not going to re-open bank the least they could do is create a peripheral device so our 30+ older games don't just collect dust while they still have transfer potential Great vid tho Droomish! It's nice to see other players that notice the intricate trade network NPC's and care they used to put into the storage systems before BANK and HOME
I've seen the complaint about home mobile being a thing that has to exist, but that is, it turns out, Pokémon company doing it for the players because they cant change nintendo's mind on enforcing NSO, so ehat they did was put the big online parts of home off the switch so nintendo cant force them to wring us out to use the gts.
@BlazingKhioneus Oh actually? I never even considered that. Though...HOME as a Switch app can't even be accessed without an internet connection, which means to use it in the first place regardless of the GTS you'd need the NSO plan. So the GTS being on mobile means although you can totally trade with regular wifi, you can't do anything with those mons, or even transfer mons into HOME to trade with in the first place without NSO...😮💨
@@StarzyKK Incorrect. You dont need NSO to use home on the switch, I dont have an NSO plan and I'm still able to move my Pokémon around between saves on switch. It's for the big, inter-player connectivity that NSO steps in and since GTS and trading are inter-player, NSO would step in.
22:24 imo the "gts now has tiered paywall features" is not a issue as with free home you have 1 gts just like in past games but if you pay you have 3 gts so if the only "limit" is taking a bit longer to send multiple mon to the gts
I remember being 8 years old and really appreciating the quality of life upgrade when RSE came out. Going from little icons that sorta represented each mon in the party menu to straight up unique little sprites for every single pokemon was such a neat thing to experience in real time as technology got better.
Pokemon storage in the past: Fun, interactive, one time payment. Pokemon HOME: Bland. Souless. Just a Pokemon prison because some of them cant go in certain switch games. Has annual payment.
i love my pokemon ranch so much, it's illegal how adorable it is. it's a storage system, there's quests you can do AND it's like pokemon amie before that existed, i shamelessly spent hours playing it also at 3:31, as a kid i was the biggest ben 10 hater only because it wasn't girly. that quote touched me deep within my soul 😭
Hearing you talking about Pokemon Ranch made me remember how personal playing Ultra Moon felt. Coming from having last played a gen 4 game, being able to feed and take care of your Pokemon made the games feel so much more personal. Even if it sort of felt like a mechanic to just.. deal with status ailments without using items. The feeling of being there and interacting with your Pokemon really makes a big difference.
I’m such a sucker for a good UI, there’s such a yearning in me for fun interactivity in Nintendo’s drought rn of making a good menu. As exciting as making the theme black or white is, I’m hoping switch 2 brings with it some of the customization of old!!
a part of me always imagined Pokemon Bank to be like a hub where bridgette works very hard to bring pokemon across time and space to other regions. I know it's not cannon, but it always gave that ethereal, "behind the scenes" vibe, in which the visuals being the sleekness of ORAS, helped. Kind of like Home. Except home always felt more forced with Grand Oak and his design.
fun thing about box you didn't mention is that it also lets you play r/s on a gamecube or wii (!!) without needing a gameboy player, just the link cable. it even gives the game a special border that differs depending on the player character's gender. both of them look really nice
As I've grown older, I've come to appreciate the 1st gen storage system. Annoying as it may be, it is a clever way to add difficulty and immersion. The limited item and Pokemon storage space added to the role playing element Pokemon sometimes loses in the modern era. IRL, I don't have a bottomless backpack or unlimited storage space. The simplicity and ruggedness of gen 1 made Kanto feel the closest and most relatable to the world we live in.
I never thought about the lore of the storage system before. It's honestly insanely charming now that I think about it. I don't think they delved into it as much as the games, but I appreciate how the Pokemon Adventures manga handled it too. Iirc the storage system was one of the main plot points of the GSC arc. The mangas just a charming series overall, I'd lowkey love if more people talk about it and their differences with the games.
One thing that I love about home is how gens 8 and 9 form a grand ecosystem, something i desperately wish bank did for 6 and 7. Like, if i'm looking to evolve my Porygon, i chuck them to hisui to use my stockpile of one man upgrades and dubious disks. However, with them being the process to transfer now also makes it a bit of a bummer how transferring it alot less of an event. Pal Park and the Poke Transfer Lab of gens 4 and 5 are so charming and make it exciting and engaging to bring them forward into a brand new world with new opportunities, plus it grounds the transfer in the universe just like the boxes.
I would definitely like to have another Pokemon box. Not so much because of it's charm, but because the connection errors in Home and the eventual shutdown of online services freak me out. I want my collection on my device and my device only. It would be okay to get another game with enough space and a full dex for this, but a storage app would definitely be enough for me. Box was great for what it was and I miss it dearly since Gen 4
Droomish is so cute, weeby room even has the orange gamecube and the plushie net. Slightly messy but not too messy nerd aesthetic. Always pog videos about my special interest too... hopefully the videos I'm making can make ppl equally happy and I can finally have a "useful skill" (money) 😭
Pokemon Home on mobile / Switch having a ranch you could customize (ie monetize) and hang out with your mons makes way too much sense so GF will never do it. You could even visit friend's ranches, maybe trade etc.
i think waltzing in with one of the hardest 'fits of all time and brandishing a Wii in hand so powerfully may be one of the greatest intros that TH-cam--dare i say, HUMANITY--will ever see.. and i have been surrounded by beauty with all you had to share on this whimsical and wondrous topic i hadn't considered so much before. epic as always Drew!!
I can imagine it might not have sold well enough to justify it, but it's a shame Box RS didn't see a wider release in North America, for such a great utility it is. Transferring a bunch of mons en masse via Box is way easier than trying to trade directly from game to game over and over again, so that really came in handy when I completed the national dex in both Emerald and FireRed.
I remember talking to the scientists in N's Castle and them saying they were going to hack the PC system in order to release everyones' pokemon. I never really see that talked about online.
Daww what a great trip down memory lane! Semi related is between Gen 1 and Gen II was transfering Pokemon to Gen I was refered to as a Time Machine. For me as a 6 year old playing Gen 2 I was so confused "Time Machine?", "Oh my gawd what is this thing?", "I must be missing an entire area of the game so I could go travel through time with like Medevil Knights and stuff?" anyways I felt silly years latter realizing I wasn't doing anything wrong and the game just worked a little bit to hard on its ludo narrative that it went over my head as a kid.
I have been doing this with home while finishing what I need to in past games before bank shuts down. I find it weird that sorting my pokemon is kinda fun
I like Pokemon Home and how easy it is to move and transfer Pokemon around, but it wans't the same as it was then with Bank and the Pokemon Ranch. Those gave us something fun to do in the meantime, especially Ranch. Which is lost to the Pokemon games of today.
I like Pokémon Home on the mobile, but the only thing that makes it difficult is to trade because there are no boxes which I could name 'To Trade' or something.
I remember Pokemon Stadium and Stadium 2 also having a mass storage, but it wasn't that impressive compared to those that came after. They both had the same amount of storage as their main series counterparts, so you couldn't really use it as mass storage like RSBox or Ranch. However, it did allow you to transfer your Pokemon around if you didn't have a link cable or second transfer pack. Stadium 1 had no limitations on who could withdraw what, but Stadium 2 had some limitations. Gen 2 carts couldn't withdraw mons with a different Trainer ID than theirs without having 150 mons registered as caught in the Dex. Gen 1 carts didn't have this, but they couldn't withdraw Gen 2 mons or mons with Gen 2 moves.
i love ur sephiroth hair, shroomish also pls make a video on how actually insane it was to see braile on the end on the emerald instruction manual with no insight until you find the regis
Dude the Pokemon bank girl was my first crush, like I remember opening a cool pokemon app my dad downloaded on my Nintendo 3DS and was like woah 😳...not much has changed tbh.
The worst part about the PC in Gen 1 and Gen 2 is the Box getting filled up. You can't catch any more Pokémon if the last Box you visited is full. Not great if you're trying to catch a rare Pokémon or legendary (or literally any Pokémon you have taken time to track down and weaken before throwing a ball at it). Gen 2 is a minor improvement as you get a call from Bill telling you when you are about to fill up your current Box, but it would have been nice if they switched the current Box to the next one with at least one empty space, which is thankfully done from Gen 3 onwards.
It’s really unfortunate that there is still no way to connect Ranch to the mainline games in an emulator. I’d love to use Ranch, but I don’t have it on my Wii :(
"Its still good and more functional than ever" while showing the SV boxes Idk if it was just me, but I was playing competitive on cart for more than a decade until the lag from SV's boxes was the last straw for me. Navigating it felt far too clunky for me to stand navigating to organise all my specific builds for raids, battles, breeding, in-game content and frustrated me so much I just decided to leave on-cart battling behind. Maybe it sounds trivial to others but it left me so constantly frustrated that the boxes barely worked, enough that I decided there were better things to do with my life that didn't make me feel so much negative emotions
My Pokémon ranch is the sole reason i modded my old wii and subsequently my wiiu just to install it, initially just to eventually get the Mew at the end of the long trek to 999 Pokémon, but it incentivizes me to poke my wiiu on every now and then to doublecheck the bios is still good and get that daily pokemon
one of my greatest achievements was maxing out my ranch and getting a legit mew (and phione at 500) !!!!! also i’ve been going back and completing the BBS missions as often as i humanly can, to trade with hayley’s exclusives and send them up to home. i really don’t want this treasure of a time capsule to be stuck in the void once bank becomes completely obsolete (which nobody seems to even know when it will lmao it could be any random tuesday and that’s very spooky) 🥺🥺🥺
18:46 I would've been pissed if this was still the case with Sword and Shield since I speedran a 2nd playthrough using Suicine from dynamax adventures to get the other Regi and Honse. Imagine doing all that and finding out you can't transfer Pokemon between profiles.
my pokemon storage memory is playing platinum as a kid and refusing to go into "someone's PC" because it felt rude to go on someone else's computer so i thought i was stuck with the first six pokemon i had unless i released them. then one day i went in and saw all the pokemon i caught just sitting there and went oh i probably shouldnt have released that staravia
18:36 I need a source on this project, I have been waiting since 2009 for the Platinum patch for My Pokemon Ranch and once they shutdown the official servers I knew officially it would never be.

fun thing about box you didn't mention is that it also lets you play r/s on a gamecube or wii (!!) without needing a gameboy player, just the link cable. it even gives the game a special border that differs depending on the player character's gender. both of them look really nice
0:52 that smile, that damn smile
The art in the storage 10:04 looks awesome and fits the aesthetic so well 😊
One thing that I love about home is how gens 8 and 9 form a grand ecosystem, something i desperately wish bank did for 6 and 7.
I love hearing your insight on pkmn features like this, just really reinforces that these games are so dang cool :)
I really like Alola's approach to the storage system with the Poké Pelago.
Having a video game accessory be a Pokémon box would be cool.
Jeez, your partnership actually comes as called, as I need a new chair. Thanks friend
I love how comfy your videos are. one of my favorite channels
i think waltzing in with one of the hardest 'fits of all time and brandishing a Wii in hand so powerfully may be one of the greatest intros that TH-cam--dare i say, HUMANITY--will ever see.. and i have been surrounded by beauty with all you had to share on this whimsical and wondrous topic i hadn't considered so much before. epic as always Drew!!
Oh, Pokémon… bring that old charm back to us 😞
I can imagine it might not have sold well enough to justify it, but it's a shame Box RS didn't see a wider release in North America, for such a great utility it is.
Awesome video again dude! You should do a video covering egg moves- I think they're such a unique part of the games packed with so much lore!
great idea, will do
The second I saw that the time on Pokemon Ranch was 2:45AM, I involuntarily yelled, "GO TO BED!"
I'm watching this video at 3:12 AM
Daww what a great trip down memory lane!
Semi related is between Gen 1 and Gen II was transfering Pokemon to Gen I was refered to as a Time Machine. For me as a 6 year old playing Gen 2 I was so confused "Time Machine?", "Oh my gawd what is this thing?", "I must be missing an entire area of the game so I could go travel through time with like Medevil Knights and stuff?" anyways I felt silly years latter realizing I wasn't doing anything wrong and the game just worked a little bit to hard on its ludo narrative that it went over my head as a kid.
Droomish. That jacket. NOW.
the shop is called "Mamono World", highly recommend them
I have been doing this with home while finishing what I need to in past games before bank shuts down. I find it weird that sorting my pokemon is kinda fun
1:49 "STOREied history"
I see what you may or may not have done there!
If Home had half the soul Ranch did, I'd pay them even more, and I'd do it happily
This is just going on the watch later right now, but storage and fun were not the first words together in my mind LOL (words from the thumbnail)
prepare to be charmed 😎
I like Pokemon Home and how easy it is to move and transfer Pokemon around, but it wans't the same as it was then with Bank and the Pokemon Ranch. Those gave us something fun to do in the meantime, especially Ranch. Which is lost to the Pokemon games of today.
I like Pokémon Home on the mobile, but the only thing that makes it difficult is to trade because there are no boxes which I could name 'To Trade' or something.
Please I need that tinkaton to elaborate on the Ben 10 take
I wish Home was able to be like Ranch but with the practicality.
Mama Droomish being a Breloom is so cute
Gen 1 carts didn't have this, but they couldn't withdraw Gen 2 mons or mons with Gen 2 moves.
i love ur sephiroth hair, shroomish
also pls make a video on how actually insane it was to see braile on the end on the emerald instruction manual with no insight until you find the regis
emerald/sapphire/ruby u get what i mean im stoned w/e
Dude the Pokemon bank girl was my first crush, like I remember opening a cool pokemon app my dad downloaded on my Nintendo 3DS and was like woah 😳...not much has changed tbh.
Mesh backed chairs are the only good chairs!
I do love the crazy future Oak
The worst part about the PC in Gen 1 and Gen 2 is the Box getting filled up. You can't catch any more Pokémon if the last Box you visited is full. Not great if you're trying to catch a rare Pokémon or legendary (or literally any Pokémon you have taken time to track down and weaken before throwing a ball at it). Gen 2 is a minor improvement as you get a call from Bill telling you when you are about to fill up your current Box, but it would have been nice if they switched the current Box to the next one with at least one empty space, which is thankfully done from Gen 3 onwards.
Fun!
And expensive! (At least before Bank)
It’s really unfortunate that there is still no way to connect Ranch to the mainline games in an emulator. I’d love to use Ranch, but I don’t have it on my Wii :(
"Its still good and more functional than ever" while showing the SV boxes
Idk if it was just me, but I was playing competitive on cart for more than a decade until the lag from SV's boxes was the last straw for me.
3:59 the terraria chest monster gave me ptsd
at least the chests seem to be named and sorted
Finally, all of my Pokémon storage questions answered! But I do still wonder... what is this Bill guy all about? 🤔
only time will tell 🤯🤯🤯
"I could sit cross-legged if I wanted to!!! I just don't want to!!" xD mhh, sure :D
I am hoping to get into PT soon. but until then I just don't feel like it!!!
Sometimes I'm shocked when he gets on camera and I'm reminded he's not actually a Shroomish
My old Wii won't play Wii discs anymore but still plays Gamecube and has some VC games so I'll hold onto it 'til it goes completely.
My Pokémon ranch is the sole reason i modded my old wii and subsequently my wiiu just to install it, initially just to eventually get the Mew at the end of the long trek to 999 Pokémon, but it incentivizes me to poke my wiiu on every now and then to doublecheck the bios is still good and get that daily pokemon
one of my greatest achievements was maxing out my ranch and getting a legit mew (and phione at 500) !!!!!
also i’ve been going back and completing the BBS missions as often as i humanly can, to trade with hayley’s exclusives and send them up to home.
i really don’t want this treasure of a time capsule to be stuck in the void once bank becomes completely obsolete
(which nobody seems to even know when it will lmao it could be any random tuesday and that’s very spooky) 🥺🥺🥺
There will probably be an advanced announcement. But having said that I'm working my butt off to save everyone this year just in case...
@@tonybrewer7536 we got this 🤝🤝🤝💖
Another banger as always!
Trainer HARETA!?
MY DUDE IS THST A DIAMOND PEARL ADVENTURE REFERENCE
18:46 I would've been pissed if this was still the case with Sword and Shield since I speedran a 2nd playthrough using Suicine from dynamax adventures to get the other Regi and Honse. Imagine doing all that and finding out you can't transfer Pokemon between profiles.
While you have to fight Peony, you can just lose to progress to the caves
Gamefreak NEEDS to make another one of these ranch games.
That reminds me, gotta finish Crystal so I can get the Celebi. 😅
NOT THE GLEE SNEAK PLEEK
Dude, your drip is kind of insane.
Ok ok I've been burning over a question for an hour now and i think you would be perfect to weigh in on it: is Looker a time traveller
my pokemon storage memory is playing platinum as a kid and refusing to go into "someone's PC" because it felt rude to go on someone else's computer so i thought i was stuck with the first six pokemon i had unless i released them. then one day i went in and saw all the pokemon i caught just sitting there and went oh i probably shouldnt have released that staravia
Lanette would definitely be a Mac user in real life
Another absolute banger
18:36
I need a source on this project, I have been waiting since 2009 for the Platinum patch for My Pokemon Ranch and once they shutdown the official servers I knew officially it would never be.
Wait, 10 dollars? Here it cost 15 euros. We've been ripped off yet again.
Paying for storing 10MB data and removing other options, gotta love gamefreak
Surprised by a lack of mentioning Poke Pelago at all. Same with not mentioning Pokejobs.
surprised you didnt touch on isla beens!
That jacket goes hard af
Holy shit a damn heater in the middle of july
Look at that starsalts shirt the man has good taste
Ben 10 is amazing and so fun, how could anyone think negative on it 😢
