I've detailed this in the video on electron transport chain. But if the electrons don't combine with oxygen, they remain in the electron carrier protein. This causes a blockage in the electron transport system and causes ATP production by oxidative phosphorylation to stop. Respiration has to proceed by anaerobic pathways.
