Camping Okefenokee by Kayak? A Georgia Moment to Share!

- Ever spend a night in a swamp? After kayaking Georgia's Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge in February, I was compelled to re-visit the swamp in the spring and share the experience with a friend. Paddling this outstanding nature reserve was one of my favorite travels this year!

Yes she enriched this story Slim what a wonderful gift of enjoying that experience with another human....a very delightful and lovely young woman. The scenes with the animals and the peaceful water and the spiderwebs full of gems, all reminded me of my own many kayak trips and brought tears to my eyes of gratitude. Thank you so much!
Did you ever consider acquiring a rugged inflatable kayak. SeaEagle makes a huge variety that are whitewater quality, inflate in 5-8 minutes, storable in the trunk of a small car, and last a long time (mine: 10yrs before I sold them!) The Explorer 380 is a good size, will bounce off rocks & logs, has super comfortable seats (holds 2 people). Ads show a Jeep Wrangler driving over it repeatedly! I never had a leak or puncture.
Caroline seems to have a lot of experience in front of the cameras. But you didn’t mention whether or not she had her own TH-cam channel. Nice to see you hanging out with other people. Be safe, nice meeting you Caroline!

It may have already been said, but when you need to turn quick just stick your paddle down in the water on the side you want to turn. For even quicker turns backpaddle on that side.

this video brought back fond memories of being at the Okeefenokee a couple of years ago. an added bonus is the lack of light pollution there so the night sky is extra beautiful

The swamps are so important to the eco system. Many do not understand this, bird's, bugs, all need a place to live .

I am so glad you showed both the winter and the early spring trips! Back in the 70's, I was in a group of 10 college students who did a 5 night trip through the swamp in canoes. We were there in the week after Christmas and had cool weather until one blustery day of a Blue Norther that came through. That was very cold the day after. We saw very few birds and zero alligators. in December, so I liked seeing your spring pics. I remember those narrow channels with the tall grasses, pitcher plants and the tannin-stained waters. I also remember the long distances each day between the camping platforms with outhouses!

I dig your friend's choice in band t-shirts. My oldest daughter loves kayaking but I've never done it. It looks very peaceful. I live next to Lake Superior and I've always found peace in and around the water. Thanks for taking us along.
What a great adventure Slim, thanks for sharing. As for bringing your kayak, I’ve taken mine cross country twice with no noticeable drop in my mileage. You just have to give it a good bath after each use to make sure it’s clean of any invasive critters. You don’t want to carry anything harmful from one water system to another. And keep an eye out for “Watercraft Check Points” as you cross State lines. They’ll want to know what bodies of water you’ve been in so keep a list.
When he said “One small mistake” I improvised , “one may become gator bait” beautiful place among th cypress swamps

Delighted to sit with my coffee and watch your video. We have taken tours through the Okeefenokee and enjoyed it greatly. We are full time RVers who are temporarily stationary while my husband recovers from pneumonia on NC. Sure miss the road and will be so glad to travel again.

Reminds me of paddling Hog Creek to Parent Lake in the rain. The river is so twisty it takes a good amount of time to get through. No gaters, but mosquitos are fierce and depending on the season, the black flies are deadly. This is in the BWCAW in Northern Minnesota. So I feel your pain. It is beautiful though and I wouldn't change a thing. Sometimes you have to work a little harder, and suffer a little bit to get to the peace and beauty of a place....

I’m so glad you spent time in the Okefenokee! I grew up in Georgia and spent many hours of my youth paddling those murky, dark waters. The cypress trees growing in the water are just amazing. Even the gators are fun. Happy travels!
Great video Slim! It’s nice to see someone appreciate the swamp, it’s definitely not for everyone but I love it. What a beautiful shot of the moon! You got some good gator shots too, they aren’t easy to get on film. Caroline was great, I’m so happy you got to share that adventure with her.

Thanks so much for taking us on your adventures! Enjoyed this one tremendously, as I am a huge fan of swamps (can’t explain why, just have always loved swamps). The scenery was so beautiful and peaceful, and I could almost smell the fresh scent of that misty morning air.
Thank you for another amazing video, Slim. Life gives you many twists and turns and the one thing I have come to love is the love of still water kayaking. I have yet another surgery to get off my list but I am really hoping that after recovery I can salvage the coming summer by being on my kayak. I'd be afraid of 'gators wanting to come into camp for a midnight snack - me being the snack. I visited the swamp back in the 1970s. Awsome place to see by boat.

One of my fondest memories is when we toured the Okefenokee swamp. We didn't kayak but took a boat tour. I would recommend it for everyone. I had much more fun there than in the Everglades

Been wanting to try kayaking for years finally my wife got me one for Christmas, watching your video it look so peaceful like you really were at one with nature.After a cold canadian winter it warmed me up even seeing the bugs out ,seeing all the leaves coming out and the flowers on the lilies was an added bonus .Come on spring enjoyed that alot slim thanks Dale
Slim. Very nice video. Caroline was a treat, too. Let's see, I think the longest solo kayak (a "Yukon" by Prijon) trip I made back in the '80s was from the southern Great Salt Lake Marina, northeast to the southern edge of Antelope Island, about 14.5 mi out and back... I was so tired when I got there, that I rested for about 8 hours and returned in the dusk and dark of the night... what a trip! Going out I had one foot waves and a wind from the stern. Dead quite on the return trip with a moon-rise, too! I do want to encourage you and any other polliwogs out there to offset your paddles 90 degrees and learn use 'em like that. Cuts down on effort and wind resistance. I still have my Yukon and take it out occaisionally ( and two others plus two small sailboats I am loathe to give up. Love canoeing, too, but I've yet to buy one as itheir weight is a problem. I'm pushing late 70s now. Cheers!

Did no one notice the alligator ? It was huge . At that point I would be turning back - you could not pay me to stay in that kayak once I knew gators were in that water!. All I could think of when they set up the tents was -what’s keeping a gator from eating them in the tents as they slept ?!! On another note Caroline seemed like a lovely person - a kindred spirit to slim . Overall a lovely video .
