just look the stats of that item. the important stats of a mage/wiz/hw is PDMG PATK MDEF MATK INT DEX VIT (THIS IS LATER WHEN YOUR INT IS 99 YOU FOCUS ON VIT) FLEE (THIS IS ALSO LATER WHEN YOU START FOCUSING TO YOUR VIT) DO NOT CHOOSE THE ITEMS IF IT HAS ATK STR AGI LUK HP (IF YOUR HP IS LOW YOU CAN CHOOSE THIS THIS IS SITUATIONAL) SP WE REALLY DONT THESE STATS. SO FOR EXAMPLE IF THAT WEAPON/ITEM/CARD HAS DEX +2, ATK +2 YOU CAN CHOOSE IT AS LONG AS THERE IS A STATS MENTION ABOVE YOU CAN ALWAYS CHOOSE THAT WEAPON/ITEM/CARD.
When you reach high level it would be a waste coz you can decrease CT with enough dex and other equip stats. So the useful staff will be thorn and ember till end game hope it helps :)
