I actually got to do a masterclass and private lesson with Mildred Dilling way back in the early 1980s! She was a lovely and gracious person and the consummate harpist!
That's amazing Elizabeth because she died in 1982 at 88! I'm sure you already know this. I just looked her up on wikipedia. Pisces are so musically gifted! I knew a few, one who played piano for silent movies who was born in 1903 and I knew in the latter part of her life. She had no lessons! She was amazing.
What an unbelievable treasure! 50 years ago in MSMU in L.A. as college nursing student, I began to study the Harp, with no one there trying it. The manual I have to this day: “Old Tunes for New Harpists” ...And now, 30 yrs a nurse, now in harp therapy for 20 yrs- Thank you, Mildred Dilling: That even the least likely harpist plays your final piece in that book: Aloha Oe, by Queen Liliuokalani-in her Iolani Palace in Honolulu. I Thank you, and bless you for this exquisite gift of a lifetime- and now, for you!
I only looked up Mildred Dilling because I had heard that she had given Harpo some informal instruction when he ran into stuff he couldn't figure out. Wow does the influence ever come through. Her playing is absolutely enchanting
Mildred Dilling was my harp teacher. She told me that if I would stop having an age and would take me as a student because I was told I was too old to take up the instrument when I was 18. So I never turned 24 and have a career as a harpist.
@@equidel1 I was asked what I want for my 70th birthday and I said a 34 string celtic harp. And I got it!! I study with books and Videos and soon am early intermediate. I never studied music either!! Congratulations. Its never too late to start to do the things you always wanted to do.
@@melissalundberg4656 Congratulations! Playing the harp will keep you forever young! As you said, it is never too late. Also 5 years ago I began doing oil painting. Now, my family, playing the harp and painting are the joy of my life. All the best!
@@equidel1 Great! I went to the Florence Academy of Art when I was 45. It was all 20 year olds there. But I made it through. Had a major show when I was 49. When we start something new in our later years, we find at a young age in our next life. Good luck..
A friend of mine took harp lessons from her. She had Harpo's original harp, and when Ms. Dilling pased away, she willed Harpo's harp to him. Unbelievable.
Many thanks, ko47ch. I never expected to find this! I once owned Mildred Dilling's recording of "La Source" and thought she and it had been completely forgotten. - John Austin, Australia
Se is really an artist! Thanks for putting this on the internet. I started in 1972 with her method ''Old Tunes''. Lovely to see. Her ''La Source'' is wonderful! Every harpist should see and hear this. Regina Ederveen - harpist The Netherlands
If you enjoy vintage harp music - check out the SCORE to Orson Welles' "Return To Glennascaul". I didn't upload it, because it was already up (in sections). And it has recently been uploaded again - this time, in one piece - with an introduction by Peter Bogdanovitch. Again, I had nothing to do with the upload - I simply recommend it to lovers of harp music, as it is quite beautiful.
I first saw a soundie video with Adele Gerard now I'm sent over to Mildred Dilling next stop Dorothy Ashly. What an education from youtube. Thank you all the great channels.
i was in a tiny little local bookstore a couple weekends ago. they had a few boxes of cheap vinyl records for less that $5 each. i pulled out a single random record and it was none other than a compilation of Mildred Dilling’s recordings for $1, and in perfect condition. this was one of the pieces on it- the vinyl manages to do it much more justice than this recording, but lovely nonetheless!
In 1979, I worked for Theodore Presser Music Publishing in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. We published her Method for the Harp and when passed by in her travels, she’d drop in. I chatted with her once and she told me she owned over 80 harps.
I love seeing the different techniques used by different harpists. There is no one way to play the harp (and no "age" that is too old to start to learn, either. Not all of us aspire to be concert harpists/harpers.)
Mildred Dilling was a friend of Harpo Marx and gave him some lessons. However Harpo has taught himself to play long before he met Dilling, and had a unique style. Im not sure how much those lessons influenced him but they hecame giod friends and he thought very highly of her.
Thanks why I got it..fell in love with the sound. Any suggestions for a small harp with similar warm sound. I hope to do therapeutic playing in the future.
Here we have a real "Expert" with such wonderful sounds of the "Harp" Mildred, makes playing the "Harp" look so easy, more young people should be exposed to classical music!
It's just that these instruments are very expensive and most parents can't afford nor want to pay for an instrument their kid might not even care about as an adult. I just started harp after playing violin for years and although I hate listening to classical music, it's fun to play it or watch it played live
Do not be your own worst enemy, contact other people who play the "Harp" take a look at some of these "Jewish" schools, ask to have them point you in direction of other musicians. Leave your parents out of this, This is going to be where you make up your mind to focus on something you love, If i new your location i could point you in a direction, When it comes to cost, you will have to do your home work there are no guarantees and do not think of how you will feel when you get old you will not get tired of music, Harp is special, you get lots of respect when people see you play and if you are good they will tell you so with the "Money"! Don't give up, and don't listen to "Negativity.
@@SoullessMermaidGames My 36 string harp cost £850. It's got a really lovely sound for what is a cheap harp. I got mine from a UK company called Gear4Music (I live in the UK). This is the harp I've got except mine is black. They do 22, 26, 29 and 36 string harps, also smaller 15 string harps but I don't think I'd bother with them so the 22, 26 or 29 string harps would be good for a child to learn and not break the parent's bank. Harps hold their value, even the cheaper ones. th-cam.com/video/g2IZyhGUZPE/w-d-xo.html
Just to help, the first piece is actually called “La Source” by Albert Zabel. I’ve also mixed up the title of this piece and have been searching for it for years under the wrong name.
I wish Lyon & Healy were still making harps as magnificent as this Style 23 she is playing. It looks like one of those WONDERFUL wide spaced models made in the late 1930's. I'm not at all fond of what L&H is manufacturing now-a-days!!

Absolutely amazing 😱
amazing:)!
I love the first piece she played, "The Fountain" by Marcel Grandjany, so pretty! Definitely one of my favorite songs on the harp.

She plays so beautifully, just look how fast her hands move!!!! I love the first piece...
Wow she made that look so easy and flawless..
Melodia Magnifica
She was a fantastic player.
I enjoyed this video
1:58 - When she starts playing. :) Truly a brilliant harpist.
amazing! wish i could play like tht! my fingers r still jumbled up when i play :P
You would see these shorts at the movie matinee. Along with cartoons. Between the featured film.
Wow ❤️
I love this

She studied with Henriette Renie at some point. Dilling was simply fabulous.
OMG!!!
wow!
WOW all I can say is WOW
just perfect :)
Can someone please tell me what she says at 1:01 ? "have been found in _____ and in Egypt" where was the first place?
She says "Ur of the Chaldees" ancient Sumerian city about 3000 BC. (Southeastern present day Iraq)
What a Lady!!!
this video is far more valuable today compared to the nonsense films that probably followed this 10-minute jewel
cool!
Does anyone recognize the song playing during the title sequence? I cannot seem to find it.
I'm inspired
👌🥇👌
Ok wow
i totaly agree i would prefer a old used L&H rather than a new harp like a style 85 or chicago tha sounds like tash.
👁👄👁 👍🏻
Ichika brought me here
NICE MUSICAL FILM!
87+ years old and still playing?
Well, someone had to sweetly hold Harpo's hand...
Criminy -- heck of a four-fingered trill on her.
Not a 4-fingered trill. That trill would be between just two consecutive notes.
Four fingered tremolo.
i dont know why but the music before the video realy gets on my nerves!!!! i want to hear her play not the other music
Wish I could get a harp and harp teacher
history...... dresden hamburg potsdam nuremberg würzburg and of course.... swinemünde March 1945
Incoming flood of ichika fans
formidabile virtuosa sembra....non so niente di arpa ma semra portentoso
I wish the Algerythym harpist today Knew Her....she would LOOK THE OTHER WAY AND WOULDNT TALK TO YOU
I studied harp under one of her students. But not Harpo Marx.
No music stand, no color strings...Woow!!!
Waric Momo there are colored strings c's are red and f's are blue or black
you dust can't see them because the film is in black/white
No scores present I see!
