    To be completely stock right out of the dealership this ZR2 totally hits a home run. Not only made it up 2.0 smooth as glass but looked damn good doing it. Everything else that I have watched going up 2.0 with the exception of the PowerWagon has struggled to even make it to the top. The video doesn't lie. This is the way you should be able to buy an offroad worthy vehicle when you spend big $$$. You should not have to leave the dealership and go to the tire shop and buy tires and lifts and extra shocks etc.etc. in order for it to be a badass. Chevy built ya one right! Good job guys!

    Great Video. ZR2 is in a class of its own right now. More Rubicon than a Raptor and more Raptor than a Rubicon.
    Especially glad to see it made it up without having to relocate the spare.
    I love my ZR2 more than I thought I would. AppleCarPlay is amazing and the standard leather seats make it a nice cabin to be in. Rear leg room is also better than my 2016 G63.

    According to Roman, Cliff 2.0 is much worse now than before. The Taco TRD Pro didn't make it up when it was easier. Big win for the ZR2. Yes the shocks are hanging low but they survived didn't they? Plus they are still higher than the PowerWagon diff. Yes the diff can survive a harder impact, but when it's too hard, you're walking home. Bust a shock mount and you're not walking. I'm impressed with the Chevy.

    • @Bradington

      Denis LeBlanc trd pro DID make it up.

    • @denisleblanc4506
      @denisleblanc4506 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Bradford Bradington It's been a while but I thought it had a problem towards the end when it was reportedly easier according to Roman. The Taco's biggest problem was its tires.

    • @Bradington
      @Bradington 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Yes, it struggled when using crawl control but they also did not air down the tires. Once they deactivated it and rear locker was engaged they climbed right over the razor edge. ZR2 definitely made it look easy, but had all the lockers engaged and tire pressure reduced even before starting up the trail. The tires are definitely better for trail riding on the ZR2, but these test's are more entertaining as a big picture rather than direct detail comparisons.

    • @yoddy0
      @yoddy0 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bradford Bradington im not so sure the zr2 had its tires aired down since they like to run things straight from factory? I believe it was just for the jeep unless i missed something then my bad.

      It made it up, but they had to take a few stabs at it before making it up and over. That said, it would be sweet if TFL can toss in a Tacoma TRD Pro along with their Wrangler vs ZR2 comparison next month.

    I used an Aussie locker in my bone stock YJ with over 210,000 miles on the original 4.0 ... Can't believe how much that rear locker transformed her off-road!!! Dirt cheap and fairly bullet proof for mild off-roaders!
    Throw one in your Jeep and test it back to back! Great episode potential...

  • @smudgeone
    @smudgeone 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I have done a fair amount of off-roading in my 2 door JK Rubicon. The only times I've really used lockers is to get up hills that are hard to even walk up, as in nothing but sky steep. The best thing you could do to get up that hill easier is to disconnect the front sway bar. A socket set, some zip-ties and about 10 minutes you'll have all the articulation you'll need to get up awkward corners like that. I am surprised the TF kit didn't come with disconnectable sway bar links.
    The Firestone Destination MT is also notoriously hard and heavy for an MT, so you can safely air down to 15 psi for even more grip. Considering they're a range E at 35", you probably shouldn't have them more than 28psi for street driving for an even contact patch. Your Jeep probably weighs in around 4000lbs, those tires are meant to handle more than that per corner. The soft ride is due to the Falcon shocks, those things are beastly.

    • @koopspook
      @koopspook 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Way more than 4000 pounds for sure

    • @smudgeone
      @smudgeone 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stock 2 door JK sport (which they had) would weigh in at about 3800-3900lbs. You add the bumper, winch, put the trektop on, and add the tires you'd be sitting around 4200lbs at most I would imagine. The tires definitely add weight but they haven't added much to the Jeep for sprung weight meaning the tires are still overkill. My own Jeep is definitely in the portly range with more armor and gear, but still below 5000lbs.

    Locking differentials are the first thing you should check off on your list. Proper gearing and 4 wheel power translation will make a more noticeable difference offroad than any lift, tire, or bumper. However, off-road has become pretty soft in America. Jon Bondurant’s “Tiny” .... great example of function over form in the Mall Crawler culture of today. Way to change the game Jon.

      For sure both are exceptional vehicles but the Jeep is going to go more places and the ZR2 is going to have better road manners and high speed characteristics. Nice to see front and rear lockers on the Chevy though definitely more than I expected them to do. TFLs Jeep would be so much more graceful disconnecting that sway bar and adding proper gearing even without the locker as the JK has a very capable brake locking diff traction system. Putting much larger then then the stock 31" tires on the ZR2 will pose as much more challenging too.

    You should make a a new segment called old off road tech or old vs. gold mine hill which means you go off roading on either gold mine hill or any off road trail on suv's and pickups ( 10 years or older ) can go on.... i suggest that u guys take a Chevrolet Trailblazer ( preferably the EXT Trailblazer which has a third row ) onto gold mine hill or an off road trail u guys think a Chevrolet Trailblazer EXT would go on. I want to see how off road worthy is Chevrolet Trailblazer EXT does off-roading. Plz and thank you.

    As a Jeep 2dr 2012 MW3 owner I realize I have an Iconic limited edition vehicle as it is. It has been paid for since 2013. I only have 32,000 miles on her because I am retired and somewhat of a recluse because my ways and means translates to outright 2 second outrage/s amongst the weinee crowd.
    My only real grip to my JK is the seats began to cause pain especially my sciatic nerve. If I spend more than an hour traveling without hopping out of it.
    When this all new truck came out I went to my local GM dealer as they had only one on the lot left. Two wheel drive only, a turbo-four banger, four way power adjustable drivers seat. No frills stereo, cloth seats. BUT WoW! Perfect sitting position! I slow drove it around for about 10 min. In their back pot holed littered now mud hole infested huge back lot and literally was blown away at how soft the "STOCK Suspension" handled these ruts! Now I'm talking maybe 5 or 10 mph not much more. But! Impressed I was. Once we headed out off the lot and onto pavement I felt myself beginning to smile at myself that GM had produced such a fun and comfortable small pickup that offered me, this 62 yr old old Fart a set of wheels and an economy pickup for $16,350.
    In my history, I once did what so many do to this day, work overtime till ya drop, beg the ol lady how and why I needs this and that upgrades to jeep and guns reloading all that hee-man shit of yesteryear, I get it. But? Needs change men. Such rough rocky trails I see this thing run on with seemingly everybody and their stripped-ass ape self blasts out here and fro needs this needs that, why didn't GM do this, why didn't they do that. Well?
    Simple actually. Research the history of four-wheelers. In 1970 my dad had a Toyota FJ-40. Always seemed to break down, once it reached about 3500 feet elevation it'd began to cough and spew and cough... struggling to reach our final destination of 8400 feet. Heavy as hell, Mom Hated the thing because it reminded her of a military truck. Suspension was terrible whenever a pot hole was encountered. Armstrong Radials were the thing back then. Dad knew of NO upgrades back then. I recall getting buried in snow/mud for over 12 hrs one time. Stuck so bad not on but two Willy's Jeeps (war surplus) managed to get us out. Talk about utility, those Jeeps were akin to riding a lawn tractor in all stock form. No heater, no defroster, no windshield wiper, only an old rag and every so many feet a guy would stop, clear the windshield off. BTW? NO RAIN~X either!
    So? Before a youngster replies with your a tard, no one cares, the one I like the most is ==SHUT-UP SHUT-UP--
    I shall proclaim, GM has produced a great product offering the worlds finest interior comfort and ability no other in the world can (for its price range) match.
    The GM employees should be proud of this small marvel of mechanical genius!

    This is why you leave the Jeep's suspension mostly stock.
    Alpine 3" lift: $2280.99
    Falcon 3.3 adjustable shocks: $1329.04
    Firestone destination MT2's: $861.28
    Rugged Ridge wheels: $1511.96.
    Grand Total: $7495.23
    A better option is to just get yourself a pair of ox lockers at $859.00 each and go have fun. Still too expensive? Truetracs are about $425.00 each. Not quite as good as lockers but close, and way better than the electronic traction control making it lurch up the hill in this video.

      Ken MacMillan Agreed. All the fancy lifts and shocks can't get you anywhere near the places lockers can get you. I have stock suspension, stock shocks, and worn out 31" ATs on my rig. However, I'm locked front and rear. The reaction from others when going over difficult terrain is priceless.

    Do the multimatic shocks have the ability to be used in a lift, or does a brand new shock have to be used for say +4in of lift?

    • @madcratebuilder
      @madcratebuilder 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The DSSV is a position sensitive shock so no lift that alters the shock shaft position. You can add the RC921 front spacer to level the ZR2, it needs a new bump stop, Belltech 4924. Hall Racing got a hold of modified DSSV's for a ZR with a 4" lift. These may become avaliable some day.

    • @hochhaul
      @hochhaul 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Body lifts are ok. A 1" body lift will allow the use of 33" tires for more ground clearance without changing suspension geometry. Any other lift is not an option unless specifically designed around the DSSV shocks.

    • @madcratebuilder
      @madcratebuilder 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      A combination of the RC921 and a 1" body lift with some minor wheel well trimming you may shoehorn 35's in a ZR2. Not sure the 3.42's would be enough gear.

    • @dlakerguy
      @dlakerguy 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Raptors don't come with front lockers or a diesel or that suspension and they're wider so they're likely to get damaged on trails. Plus they're Fords.

    • @hochhaul
      @hochhaul 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ZR2's start at 42k, Raptors start in the mid 50k range. The Raptor is a desert truck with no harass V8 available. The ZR2 has position sensitive spool valve shocks, is significantly more compact, has a diesel option, and can actually fit on most trails. The Raptor is too big.

    • @brandonwright2067
      @brandonwright2067 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dale Couture you just stated all the obvious and most off roaders dont want or care about diesels for off road use I'm not a ford guy but raptor is proven and smashing all competition I think gm should have used the single cap Silverado in someway to fight the raptor

    • @dlakerguy
      @dlakerguy 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      brandon wright Raptor has no competition. There isn't one other half ton truck trying to do the off-road thing. Easy to dominate a market that doesn't exist. The Colorado wasn't built to compete against the Raptor. It's in an entirely different class.
