I think it's because he represented USA his whole life until the Olympics qualification thing came along. His parents also moved him from Japan to the US specifically so he could be a pro surfer. Even in 2016 Kanoa was surfing under the US flag. Totally makes sense why he did it and he would have qualified anyway even if he was representing the US.
It’s sad to see Igarashi claim that first wave of his. It’s almost painful to watch. Surfing at its worst.
this has to be satire, no? in the finals of one of the biggest events, finally gets a decent wave after 10+mins of waiting, and does a tiny celebration mostly for himself because he's fired up. are surfers not allowed to show a shred of emotion?
i could see it if he did the claim to the judges, but it looks like it was completely involuntary, just some elation for himself. do you go out and surf with a completely straight face? never smile after a good wave?
the last 2 waves were egregious i agree, but the first one? that's barely a claim
Interesting take... I never understood the anti-claim mentality so many people have in the surfing community. You're out there to have fun, no? So many people in my local spot are like zombies in the water, almost dead inside. It makes you wonder if they even want to be out there. They give you weird looks when you yell, claim waves, hype up your friends, etc.
I've always found it so strange that so many people view surfing as this serene, 'one with nature', 'Zen' sport. Maybe longboarding on a small day but come on. Surfing is literally categorized as an "EXTREME sport." I think a lot of the older generation of surfers think this way.
I gotta take An Okay Player's side here, Igarashi has a lot to show for, being that this is the beach he grew up in, and the finals of an event he's defending his crown on.
He didn't even do anything crazy with the claim, either. It was one of the mildest claims and celebrations I've ever seen. If anything, the claims and such on Igarashi's other waves were "worse" if you want to see it that way. Surfing at its worst? Well, to each their own.
@@alexwhite7808 I have grown up with surfing and skating, although just not in the time period of the, I guess, "renaissance" of the Surf-Skate scene in the 80's and 90's. I mentioned this when I said the anti-claim culture thing was more of an older generation behavior, which you seem to agree with.
As for why I mentioned surfing was an extreme sport... It's not just me. most websites, sports magazines, and even reputed websites like Brittanica Dictionary list surfing as an extreme sport.
As for the surf culture, I think it's been evolving in recent years. You see it too, right? The explosion in energetic kooks in a lineup. The aggressive surfers screaming f*ck every time they miss a wave. Everybody snaking everybody. The crowd of hype men sitting in the lineup. I think me being around the same age as Igarashi, I think I can relate to him and this 'new' culture more and may be biased admittedly as a result. Though I will say that Igarashi's last claim was pretty cringeworthy.
As a final note... I think we agree for the most part. And I do believe you have a valid point, and that there are already established lines drawn in the sand. Culture is... well, culture. Whether you or I understand it or not. Just as you and I may not understand some tribe in Africa's culture, it doesn't make it any less valid, and I think that's something we both agree on. But just as you came from a generation focused on humility, respect, and fundamentals, I seem to have come from one focused on action, adrenaline, and thrillseeking. And that's totally fine and great. But I try to stay open minded and inclusive and can't agree with shaming someone out of a sport because they don't exactly fit the stereotype of the dominant culture. But as I said... to each their own.
But who knows, maybe this comes with age and wisdom. Maybe one day I'll look back and cringe at how I was back in my 20's.
