  • Whether transitioning from another profession or starting your first professional job, we discuss how certification can help start your business analysis career. We answer questions from our live audience about making this change.
The Entry Certificate in Business Analysis (ECBA) is a professional certification offered by the International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA). This is a globally recognized certification designed for people who don’t have experience in the business analysis profession. It demonstrates to leadership and professional employers that you have an understanding of business analysis and demonstrates your commitment to working in the profession.
We talk about the benefits of certifications, such as enhancing credibility and making job seekers more findable. The ECBA certification is based on the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge (BABOK) Guide. The BABOK guide is free for IIBA members, but can be purchased separately for studying for ECBA certification for those who are not IIBA members.
Networking opportunities are helpful for finding job opportunities, studying with peers, and solving day-to-day problems within the community. IIBA has 120+ Chapters around the world that are run by dedicated volunteers to organize various programs and activities for professional networking. These include guest speaker events, study groups for certification preparation, professional development days, and even in-person events.

I'm from Pennsylvania. What experience or pre req's do you have to have to enroll in this course? Are you recognize by the industry? How do you differ being BA as supposed to being a Data Analyst?

I would like to thank the IIBA for removing the mandatory 21 hours of training requirement before sitting the exam. In my experience, the training did not help me prepare for the exam and it was a waste of money. Instead, simply reading the BABOK and studying each section as many times as necessary was the best form of test preparation.
Admittedly, the BABOK often uses language that is unnecessarily confusing (not unlike the PMBOK) and I think many students could benefit from literature that simply explains BABOK concepts in a more accessible and less convoluted fashion. Perhaps a Cliff's notes version.? Whereas the BABOK is clinical and technical by nature, explaining the concepts need not be.

Sorry if this is a silly question but I am just learning about this for the first time. For someone with around 8+ years of experience as an analyst does everyone think these certifications would be useful? I have a bachelors in Information systems and have had a lot of fantastic experience in multiple jobs since graduating. Unsure if this would be more geared for people who did not graduate under related degrees or if it would be a good resume booster at any point in a career as a analyst.

From my biased opinion (I've worked for IIBA for 3 years), I earned my CBAP certification in 2010 after 10 years of business analysis experience. My motivtation for pursuing CBAP certificaiton was to earn external validation of my skills. What I didn't anticiapte was learning a few new things that I hadn't been exposed to. I recommend it, but don't just take my word for it. Here's a testimonial from a new CBAP recipient th-cam.com/video/32CQKATnmj4/w-d-xo.html

I am watching this podcast from Costa Rica, and one of my biggest challenges is developing my career in a non-native language. This is because I need to acquire the communication skills in English that you recommend?. Please give me some tips.
