As I got older that’s how I felt about Lent… not giving something up, but adding something or doing something to help others. I feel that brings me closer to God and it’s just more meaningful.
I agree, yet enjoy giving something(s) up. This year I have thought to replace each thing I give up with something that encourages my spirituality.

Uh, why? Why would anyone think religious faith is a good thing? Religious faith is the bullshit answer you give when you have no reason for your beliefs. I mean is there anything you can NOT believe in based on faith? Can I believe Elvis is "god", lives on Venus and is flying back to Earth in a Mercedes Sl 500 to take me to live with him on the moon? Or maybe in his parish the priest sprinkles the ash on the head? Both sprinkling of ashes and tracing an ahs cross are common practices in the world. Bepends on where you are which you are more likely to encounter. The Vatican and Italy sprinkle ashes, in the USA tracing an ash cross is more common. In my country we do both and it depends on the tradition in that particular parish.
