After a million of video drum lessons watched, in wich a lot of 'wannabe' drummer speaks for hours to 'say' nothing at all. John X is simply the best. A relaxed pro who teach first the core of the drumming ( music, music, music). His lessons are short, full and full of groove. No way for the tatooed logorroic drummers whose we can avoid with pleasure. Thanks John!!
John, as a drum teacher in Vegas I have a good idea, who has a good teaching aproach. You my friend are wonderful. I would study with you any day. Thanks william st john
excellent. best part is he doesn't start by saying, "a lot of you have been contacting me asking to make a video describing how to blah, blah, blah". this guy can drum (like a mad man), teach, and make a very watchable videos. most can't. 'very impressed
Me suscribí porque Mr John X me parece un axcelente profesor. Soy baterista y tengo 73 años y buscaba clases muy sencillas para que mi nieto pueda aprender bien. Creo que encontré lo que que buscaba. Gracias y muchos saludos. I´m italian and live in Venezuela.
Excellent John! I love the accents/ghost notes because I used to think they were easy to incorporate but in fact take precision and intricate timing. Thank you again!
Agreed with the other comments. I'm a 38 year old ex professional rock drummer, and I have recently started studying basics and other styles that I didn't even think about when I was starting out. In my day, one had to purchase books and videos or pay a teacher! Now in the internet age great lessons and teachers are available to all and it's fantastic. You teaching and lessons are great. I have started with this one and intend to trawl through them all! Thank you.
Love it. When my son was a few months old he would wake up in the middle of the night and I would sit with him and play Bill Evans and Miles Davis records. He's now 23 years old and loves this music.
ur a grt teacher squire. i usee tpo play da drums ireland when i was a young sap. now 50 yrs on I'm starting out agin. here in peru. u have dat gift of teaching. keep it up young squire.
A favourite lesson! This paradiddle-diddle fill really changed my Jazzdrumming experience for some years now! It has so many possible variations that it has become my most used fill when playing Jazz. I often use it in combination with a triple accented four bars roll of 1/32-rds in a 4/4 jazz rithm. Greatings from Holland, Gerard van der Schrieck
Gerard, I am glad to hear that this lesson made such an impact on your drumming. Your free transcription is on the way. Enjoy the journey my friend, JohnX
That was absolutely brilliant , loving all this Jaz drumming , I can play along to most rock and pop stuff but this is a different feel , thanks for your generous time
Thank you. I'm happy to hear that you enjoyed my video lesson. Please share with your friends. In June, I will be releasing a series of 4 Bar Jazz Fill drum clips. Keep an eye out for them. All he best, John X
Great video, JohnX! Love watching all the new additions. Highly recommended for any drummer. These lessons are great, because you manage to deliver a concept that has a ton of depth in a very simple, easy to grasp way. Best, Derek N
This video is great, I don't usually comment for the sake of commenting, however this is worth it. Also if anyone want to spice up a swing grove just through this in as a single measure keeping all the right hands beats on the ride. Thanks for this.
John, this was very nicely broken down. You made it all very simple. It reminds me that, after all these years, I need to go back and smooth out a whole lot of lumpy gravy in my playing. Thanks for the lesson.
Steve Smith gave me that cymbal about 25 years ago and it is one of my all-time favorites. It's a 20" K ride made when the K's were all being produced in Zildjian's Canadian factory.
Your my dude! I just recently joined a school "rock" band and knew very little of jazz drumming. When I arrived for the rehearsal, they pushed my way some jazz music. I was at sea and didn't know what I was doing. Thanks for help, these came really easy to me. Tomorrow I have my next practice and I'm feeling good!
Making music with RUDIMENTS! How inspired! I always thought of rudiments as the boring exercises for practice only. You givin' me ideas, now. Thanks a lot, JohnX!
I"m just getting comfortable with the paradiddle-diddle, but it's one of my favorite rudiments. Thanks for showing me how to apply it to a groove and make it useful. I love your lessons, you make everything easy to understand, Thanks John!
I’m not the biggest jazz guy but I appreciate it ...and these lesson are so awesome and will definitely help me play worship music thank you Sir really enjoyed this lesson straight to the point and easy to understand 👍
Hey John just wanted to say thanks alot. Ive been trying to find one of the best ways of learning cool new styles, rudiments, fills, etc. And i can honestly you are the best teacher i have found. Beleive me ive tried alot of teachers. The way you break things down can really help a dude like me out. Thanks for the help! Keep up the good work!
I want to say thank you for these videos. They are easy to follow and really do give me great ideas for authentic sounding jazz licks. I am working intensely on four way independence and am determined to master it. My passion is to play jazz but it requires so much from the drummer. I remind myself regularly that patience and persistence will get me there.
Thanks. That cymbal is one of my absolute favorites. It's a 20" K ride Steve Smith gave me about 30 years ago. It was made in Zildjian's Canadian factory before Robert Zildjian founded Sabian. It's a unique cymbal because the K logo is not only on the top of the cymbal, but on the bottom as well. All K's made it the US have the K logo on the the top and the Zildjian logo on the bottom.
I've always had problems properly shifting from simply learning stickings and rudiments on a practice pad to putting them in fills like this but you've bridged that gap for me and it's easy to see how to apply it. Thanks!!
I'm in a rock band, but I also work 30+ hours a week and have 18 credits at school and struggle to find time behind the kit when I'm not at practice. I've been getting the swing cymbal beat down and now I'm excited to pick this lesson up real quick. You broke it down very well so that I'll be able to jump right on the kit and practice. I like the polyrhythmic fill at the end too! I'm sure that some jazz chops will help me out in rock applications!
Thanks for the inspiring lesson. Got a jazz gig tonight and will work on those variations around the kit that you demo'd - you get a lot of mileage out of this rudiment. I like to use it for the jazz swing pattern phrased as 1/8 note triplets played between the ride (all Rs) and the snare (all Ls), with bass on 1 & 3 and hat on 2 & 4 starting with the following sticking: RLL RLR, so the that rudiment actually begins with the upbeat of 2 or 4. Dig the sound of your kit and thanks for sharing.
For what I do, the two best kick drum mics are the Shure beta 52 and the AKG d112. I have the d112 built into my DW drums using the May miking system. I use the Shure for the jazz kit
This lesson was really easy to understand! I thought that jazz drumming is so hard to understand and amuse, but now I feel that i can handle on it! Thanks for perfect lesson sir.
