The violinist is the late great Wilfred Gibson, Wilf quit ELO not long after this was filmed, Wilf had a dispute with Jeff Lynne over the salary that Lynne was paying him. Wilf was certainly a world class violinist.

    • @davidmacgregor5193
      @davidmacgregor5193 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@paulbantick8266 When Kaminski joined ELO in the fall of 1973, he used a brown violin like Gibson's, Kaminski also wore a cape like Gibson did for a while. Kaminski got his blue violin from the Barcus Berry company after they'd perfected electric pickups for classical instruments. Barcus Berry only had a blue violin ready for use at the time, so that's the reason Kaminski's violin was blue. Gibson left ELO during the recording sessions for the "On the Third Day" album and only the tracks on side two of the album had been recorded with Gibson playing violin. Kaminski played on all the tracks on the albums side one. Gibson's playing on the album wasn't credited to him, it was all credited to Kaminski. Out of the three ELO violinists only Kaminski is still with us today. R.I.P. Wilf Gibson and Steve Woolam. I've met Mik Kaminski on several occasions when he's been performing with his "Beatles, Blues and Blue Violin" project, he comes across as a nice, genuine and humble guy.

    Line-up here is:
Jeff Lynne - lead guitar & vocals
    Bev Bevan - drums
    Richard Tandy - piano
    Michael D'Albuquerque - bass
    Wilf Gibson - violin
    Colin Walker - cello
Mike Edwards (in tux and balaclava hat) - cello
It's Edwards who was killed recently in that bizarre and tragic fashion, not Gibson.

Jeff Lynne is the most talented Music God ever. He will be 71 in 2018 and his voice is Gold. All his live concerts sound as good if not better than the original recordings...Not many bands and musicians can match that. Just have a listen from Jeff Lynne's ELO at Wembley Stadium June 24 2017... Can't wait to see Jeff Lynne's ELO on the 2018 Europe and North American Tour. I just received my tickets for LA , NY and Toronto Canada. It will be awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Several years ago I saw an expensive fireworks display with this song as its grand finale.
Holy crap -- toward the end they had the explosions coinciding with about every other beat, and it was utterly mind-blowing! On the last note, a big chrysanthemum firework filled the sky, and my co-workers and I just sat there with our eyes glazed.
Although the song's been covered by some classic rock acts, ELO's version is my all-time favorite.

Have heard reviewers say that this track is out of place on the ELO 2 album and let’s the whole album down. What rubbish! The whole performance, whether the single version, or the longer album version is absolutely tremendous, and is so full of energy, ranging from Bev’s drumming, to the string section, not forgetting Jeff’s vocals and guitar. Fabulous.

As a classically-trained bassist, who, like TAEdison, discovered electricity and had his life change, has still kept a few strings in that world. The strings in ELO used to be part of the on stage musicians, not just sequestered in an however-many piece orchestra. I love the early stuff, because you can see how the string players personalities used to come out on stage. Their set up was pretty trippy if you didn’t know what they were when you went and saw them. Not at all typical of the usual rock bands of the time. It was kind of strange, seeing a cellist in front of what was back, then an equivalent of a full Marshall stack or more. Nevertheless, this rendition, where they have two people playing with Bows on the cello at the same time, is just…je ne sais quoi! It speaks to the personality of what was once the band. Jeff’s personality kinda overcame the others, I think, but when you think about who he was, he was almost another Beatle. Imho, this was the best part and the best work b4 the current space station vibe of the band…

I'm having an ELO love-in so am going to say on every video I watch that they were the best band ever.

I get nights like that too. I was on the Clash and then the Smiths. Moved on to Olivia Newton-John and now ELO (a slightly more logical link). There is a link on the left that suggests the greatest band ever could have been Queen. Long live TH-cam :)
