    I think this is the best resin tutorial I have seen to date. Simple, on point, complete, understandable...especially for those of us who have a confrontational relationship with math. ;) Thank you.

    I usually fill my moulds with water to see how much resin it will take, but now I'll be doing the rice test . That totally cuts out the hastle of drying the mould and stuff - so thank you for that tip - very helpful.💜

      Water does work too, but like you said... it takes extra time. I'm too impatient for that! LOL Plus, I don't like to have water anywhere near my resin, so the rice is a life saver!

    I only use water, its accurate. Rice, sand, salt etc can leave tiny bits in the mold necessitating washing the mold anyway.

    • @PatriotMilitaryMom

      I use water too. Resin is thicker, but it gives you a good estimate anyway.

    Based on volume, the air spaces between the rice grains detract from the accuracy. Wouldn't sand or table salt., or sugar be a bit closer in accuracy ? For that matter, why not use water or corn syrup? Just askin' Zak.✌

    • @ZacHiggins
      @ZacHiggins  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can use any of those if you like, but the smaller the material, the harder it is to get it all out. Rice is accurate enough for me

    Wouldn't a liquid like water give you a better measurement? There is a lot of air space that is not accounted for with the rice. I think, not sure which is why I am asking! 😁

    • @ZacHiggins
      @ZacHiggins  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It may, but it's also a pain to clean up, and you don't want to have any moisture in the mold when you go to cast it. I find rice to be plenty accurate and much quicker/cleaner. Just add a little extra resin, and you'll be good to go =D

    • @shan80luvs
      @shan80luvs 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ohhhh nvm disregard previous reply on other comment - so u can use water you just have to dry it really well- again after vermicelli is all over the table lmao 🤣 🤣 🤣

    Hi Zac, more great tips Thank you. I have a question. If I am pressure casting components in resin, does the silicone mold that I am using need to be made under pressure during its curing.

    • @ZacHiggins
      @ZacHiggins  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Rodger, glad that it was helpful. No, you don't need to make the silicone mold under pressure, but you do need to make sure there are no air bubbles in it, so vacuum degassing and pouring the silicone carefully are musts to ensure the mold doesn't deform when any air bubbles collapse under pressure. Great question! =D

    How about water instead of rice, well it work?

  • @societycrumbles
    @societycrumbles 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Rice method didn't work for me, I was still coming up way short on resin and had to mix more. I guess it's because my molds are unusual shaped and detailed, so the rice couldn't fill all of it.

  • @joydarling314

    Would using water work as well?

  • @paulfreeman9686
    @paulfreeman9686 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The 'weight' part is a little confusing. Do you weigh the rice, and that equals the rough weight of total resin ?

  • @power_SERG
    @power_SERG 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    This might be a silly question, but if you want to re-use cups for resin mixing, is it safe to wash it on the sink with just soap and water?

    • @ZacHiggins
      @ZacHiggins  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You need to use a solvent like acetone or denatured alcohol, I don't think soap and water would work and probably not the best thing to pour down the sink anyway. Best way to go is just wait til it sets up then peel it out, you'll want to use a non stick cup, like paint mixing cups, for that method

      Yeah, I wouldn't want to mess with water personally. Water and resin don't mix, and I wouldn't want to have to wait to use it

    liquid measurement try water in the mold instead of rice

    • @ZacHiggins

      You could do that, it will also tell you if a mold has leaks in it. I'd rather not have to worry about getting all the water out though, resin hates water so I keep it far away from it

    Can’t you just calculate the volume using basic geometry?

    • @ZacHiggins
      @ZacHiggins  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need to know the conversion factor to take it from cubic inches to ounces. That works fine for simple geometric shapes, but it's really not going to help much on super odd shaped things that are complex. It's much faster and easier just to use rice or something similar for those, and you can just use an online resin calculator for rectangles or cylinders if you don't want to memorize the formulas. If you really love math, Alumilite's volume calculator page explains the math

  • @johnfromnewjersey9720

    Why not just use water instead of rice?

    • @ZacHiggins
      @ZacHiggins  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You have to make sure to dry it out completely or it will cause curing issues, especially with urethane resins like Alumilite Clear, which I use for most everything I make. It will work if you want to use it, but I think most people will find that something like rice works a lot faster and easier. I only recommend things that I would actually do, but that doesn't mean it's the only, or best, choice for you. I also don't have a water source in my part of the shop, so it's more of a hassle just to get water in the first place, I can keep a bag of rice handy and reuse it over and over again.
