Macro Photography Ideas You Can Do At Home

  • Even if you're stuck at home, there are a ton of amazing macro and close-up photography subjects you can photograph! I've made a list of my personal favorites in hopes of giving you some useful ideas. Some of these are a blast to photograph!
    If you feel like you haven't been doing enough photography recently because you can't travel to as many places as usual, this video is for you. One of the biggest strengths of macro and close-up photography is that you can do it anywhere, including in your home, and get amazing results.
    I admit that some of these ideas are a bit unusual, like freezing custom-made clear ice to get more interesting patterns and structures, but that's just part of being a macro photographer!
    Along with that, I will point out that you don't technically need a macro lens for most of these photo ideas. Even kit lenses tend to have pretty decent maximum magnifications around 1:4 or so, which is enough to take great pictures of most of these subjects. A macro lens certainly helps if you want to get closer, though.
    I also recommend searching around and coming up with your own ideas for this type of photography. With some creativity, there’s really no limit to what you can photograph.
    As always, let me know below if you have any questions! Thanks for watching!

      Really appreciate it! I’ve seen something similar where a photographer captured an upside-down 2D world map with a similar setup, making a perfect globe with the droplet. There’s so much creative potential in this type of macro photography!

    CD water trick I found works also with rain on a car window. It creates a look that you're underwater looking up at water bubbles.

    Im getting a macro lens tomorrow and Im hyped to see what I can achieve.
    Im getting a vintage macro lens called Panagor 90mm f2.8 which will cost me only 80€ and is in perfect conditon. - so yeah lets see how it will perform.
    Maybe I will talk about my experience with it here in one week or so 🤔🤷‍♂️

    Hello sir, new to your channel, this is a really amazing video with lots of new ideas, I do have a question that can we achieve all these results using a kit lens 18-55mm?

    • @PhotographyLifeChannel
      @PhotographyLifeChannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, in almost every case! Zoom in to 55mm and focus (probably manually) at the closest focusing distance. You’ll actually get a surprisingly good close-up view.

    The one with ice gave me an idea for a challenge: Macro or top-down landscape photo? :D

    • @PhotographyLifeChannel
      @PhotographyLifeChannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, Natalia! Good idea. Sometimes it’s so hard to tell. I’ve taken some drone photos from 200 feet up that look eerily similar to that macro shot. There are so many patterns in nature that keep reappearing regardless of scale. I love finding anything like that for photography.

      @@PhotographyLifeChannel Could you please also do one video like this using mobile macro lens?. Thanks.

    • @PhotographyLifeChannel
      @PhotographyLifeChannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@IamPidugu The big problem with mobile macro photography is simply a lack of light. You could easily do the oil+water idea, the ice idea, and the CD idea with a macro attachment for your phone. But the moment you need to freeze action for images like water droplet photography, you simply need a flash. Luckily, there are more subjects you *can* photograph than can’t, but you’ll need to do some trial and error to make it work!

    Useful content, capably presented w/o distracting hype.👍 Nicely presented recap of ideas elsewhere covered (clear ice “how to” newish). Just subscribed. You connect well w/viewers, but audio on this post has bit of echo. Take care.

      Really appreciate your feedback, and welcome to the channel! Your comment is completely on-point. Other than the ice idea, these are based on my favorite ideas I’ve seen elsewhere. And there definitely is some audio echo - I dampened the room afterwards, and the video I’m publishing tomorrow sounds much better to my ear.

    I found using a computer screen can make a great backdrop using images on screen.
    OR grab your polarizing filtter pop it on the lens, open a blank (white) page on screen and put something made from plastic between the screen and lens. Turning the filter will the stress of molding and using the object.in bright colours. Some great ideas to try. 👍👍

    • @PhotographyLifeChannel
      @PhotographyLifeChannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, that’s an awesome idea! Polarizers can lead to some strange patterns any time LCDs are involved.
      Kind of along the same lines, you could put a tablet under the oil/water setup and pop up your own photos underneath for the background! Pretty trippy.

      @PhotographyLifeChannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It really depends on your budget. But the most flexible line is the standard A7 series, specifically the A7 III at the moment. 24 megapixels may not be the highest number you’ll see on the market today, but it’s more than enough for landscapes, wildlife, or anything else. You could go for the A7R IV if you need more pixels, or the A9 if you need maximum autofocus performance, but I’d put the money toward lenses instead.

    At 2:21, what do you mean by "freeze it in the pan from earlier"? In the video, you seem to put the cups in the freezer. So I don't understand what the significance of the pan is?

    • @PhotographyLifeChannel
      @PhotographyLifeChannel  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The pan holds extremely salty saltwater, which doesn’t freeze as easily. It basically creates a temperature gradient that allows the bubbles to rise out of the freshwater in the cups.

    • @PhotographyLifeChannel

      It definitely doesn’t need to be a formal macro lens. Most kit lenses have a pretty good maximum magnification, and should be suitable for literally all of these photo ideas. I call it “macro” photography in the title, but I don’t think I ever exceeded 1:4 magnification for the shots in this video (maybe for the ice, but that one is easy enough to just freeze a bigger piece of ice in a larger container).
