    Jeez the "the game did it better because it had battle sequences, or had this scene involve more action" speech is getting so exhausting. It's gameplay. It's needed in the game. The series will do it when it's truly impactful and makes sense for the story. Having infected wandering around in this scenario takes your attention away from the plot. This is not the Walking Dead, in which every episode has the "they're talking and a random zombie appears because people want that" scene. It would make it expected and eventually tiring.
    This episode was freakin amazing, and it perfectly adapted this section of the game.
    Also they explained why they did it the scene with Joel outside the building in the podcast and it makes perfect sense. The building was on fire and David had the key. The emotional impact of Joel hugging her and saying "It's okay, baby girl, I got you" is still huge.

  • @kasandraprice-rv8xg
    @kasandraprice-rv8xg ปีที่แล้ว +67

    They talked about the change in the podcast. It was logistics of the burning building but also, they wanted to stress the point that Ellie could save herself physically. When Joel embraces her he’s saving her emotionally essentially.

    • @RaggedyPack
      @RaggedyPack  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      What’s the name of this podcast? I’ll give it a listen, but I doubt there’s anything they can say to change my mind. Joel doesn’t save her physically in the game but the scene is still done the same. So saying they wanted to stress it is kind of silly when she just slaughtered a full grown man on her own anyway - Blake

      @@RaggedyPack no but let’s be for real, realistically Ellie would’ve probably chopped Joel’s face while in that feral-like state had he hugged her! also how the hell was he supposed to get in the stakehouse if david had the keys and all the doors were locked? • @cybrpunk
    @cybrpunk ปีที่แล้ว +78

    They explain the change in the ending in the episode podcast. Basically, it's a logistic difference - because they were locked in the building and there was no way for Joel to get inside, plus they wanted to give Ellie full agency.

    • @sn4tx
      @sn4tx ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah exactly. The tv show uses more real world logic than the game. In the game they were locked in but then Joel magically appears inside. Sure one could argue he could bust a door down. But he’s also 3/4 away of becoming “venison”.
      But also according to real world logic, for safety reasons, the emergency handle would open the door regardless being locked. And that’s exactly what we see Bella using to open the door 😂

    • @TARS20
      @TARS20 ปีที่แล้ว

      I tried to think of any way to go around that, but even if Joel shot the door lock with his gun, the scene wouldn't happen anyway:
      1. The main door could've been burning
      2. The sound of the gunshot would startle Ellie and who knows what Ellie might do, she might go hide and tried to attack Joel.
      Tbh, I'm only a bit bummed that the show didn't make Joel whispered something to Ellie to calm her down like he did in the game, it's something I feel very personal to be able to comfort Ellie.

    Non-gamer so I may be biased towards the show, but to me, Ellie pulling herself back after she killed David is so much more impactful. She fully saves herself and brings herself back from the edge. She also does the “he tried to” moment from the game before she stops and just hugs Joel.
    You’re not the first person to complain about this so I went back and watched the clip from the game, that moment didn’t have the same impact as the show for me at all. Especially David, he is so much more sinister in the show. In the game it looks like he’s strangling Ellie before she gets to the cleaver. In the show, he has that line about the struggle being his favourite part and, I could be wrong, but it looked like the reason her hand is free to grab the cleaver is because he lets go to unbuckle his pants. In every way the show did that scene better.

  • @gerardogalvan4316
    @gerardogalvan4316 ปีที่แล้ว +38

    It has been explained several times. It's not only logistical but symbolical. Ellie leaving the fired place by her own feet after killing David shows that Ellie is capable to survive by her own and fight for her life without Joel because in the game Joel kind of "rescues" her.
    So I'm glad they changed that part for the good. In the show at the end of the day Joel saved her emotionally not physically.
    And please guys just disconnect the brain from time to time or otherwise you won't enjoy the show AS A SERIE. I love the game. It's one of my favorite ones ever but don't try to overanalyze it. I've seen other reactions from other channels since the first episode and it's pretty evident when they ignore the aspects of the game and disconnect their brains in order to enjoy the show although they're fans of the game to death.
    This program is perfect for what it is supposed to be: a serie

    James was really adamant about killing Ellie before they brought her back, but he didn’t seem very violent or malicious… which makes me think that maybe he was trying to have her go the easier way versus being with David and/or the human butcher shop

  • @kkjhn41
    @kkjhn41 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    She wasn't trying to make her voice deeper; Bella has talked about this. These outdoor scenes were shot during February in Alberta, Canada. They day the scene with her confronting David and James was shot the temperature was seventeen below zero. Bella said her larynx was starting to freeze and that she was having trouble saying her lines, hence the way her voice sounded. She was also dealing with an idea that Craig Mazin had. Instead of the foam prop gun she was given a real hunting rifle that was almost bigger than her and weighed a ton. They did it so she would have to struggle to keep covering David and James like a real-life Ellie would. Craig took a special delight in describing how she was feeling the effects of take after take doing this the next day in her biceps and pecs.

Not sure why one is justified, and one isn't, and I'm not sure why someone preferring a different version of something would be "annoying" unless you're genuinely upset when others don't share your opinion, or at the very least, don't share your opinion for what you would consider a good enough reason. Interesting psychology there.

    I disagree. It was important for Ellie's character development for her to save herself. We needed to know what she has learned from her Fedra training and from her time with Joel. Both taught her how to survive - and she did. Joel's character development is complete - he will survive and he is a man who will kill for family and anyone he loves. Ellie is now his "baby girl". That "cult" f'd around and found out even death was not going to stop him.

  • @crystalpritchard5065
    @crystalpritchard5065 ปีที่แล้ว +39

    I’m so curious why Blake thinks that having Joel come stop Ellie from continue to cut David is their defining moment when they accept one another. To me that happened back in episode 6, or back at the dam in the game, when they chose to continue on this journey together and Ellie didn’t go on with tommy. That’s when Ellie and Joel became surrogate father and daughter.
    To me, Joel coming in to stop Ellie is just another example of him saving her, and it’s not needed. It’s him saying “it’s ok Ellie, I’m here, you can stop, I’ve got you”. In the show, Ellie is so much stronger because she destroys David and then gets herself out. As a woman viewer, my god that moment is powerful. Joel came to save her, we all expected Joel to be the one to save her, and she walks out having done it herself. She’s formidable in that moment.

    • @RaggedyPack
      @RaggedyPack  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, to me that moment at the dam was just them continuing on. Ellie still saves herself and proves she is strong in the moment in the game. Joel just is right there to bring her back. The moment in the game is a shared moment. Where Joel realizes he has a daughter and Ellie realizes she has a father. That moment does not happen at the dam bc they never embrace or even talk about it other than by lashing out at each other.
      Like I said, the shows version still works just fine. But to me, that moment in the game was perfect and should not have been changed. - Blake

    • @crystalpritchard5065
      @crystalpritchard5065 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@RaggedyPack I haven’t played the game, just watched game play on TH-cam, but to me that moment of acceptance happened in the show at episode 6 when they are leaving Jackson. During the official podcast they talk about Joel’s smile when he hits the target while training Ellie and how’s that one of those “dad magic” moments. How Ellie looks up to Joel the way young kids look up to their dads thinking they are superheroes and can do anything. Then later his smile when he says everyone loved contractors and Ellie leans her head on his back. Their body language establishes that they are father and daughter. And that’s the happiest they’ll ever be together. So I like that in the show they gave Ellie the agency to pull herself back, not to rely on Joel to save her from her anger and trauma in that moment. The game version didn’t do it for me at all, but maybe people are just biased towards the first version they’ve seen.

    • @RaggedyPack
      @RaggedyPack  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, again none of those moments to me have the impact that the one we’re talking about does. And I completely recognize that I’m going to be in the minority here. Great episode. Still very impactful. I just prefer the games version - Blake

    I preferred the show's version of how they dealt with Ellie's scene. by a lot. To me, it wouldn't have worked logistically if the story is that all the doors are locked, and Joel can't move and jump over windows because of his condition. But metaphorically, it demonstrates that while she needed Joel to protect her at the beginning of the story, the dynamic has changed as well as what she needed from Joel. She needed the emotional support more than the physical support.

    I think the scene where Ellie first meets David is so well directed and performed!
    You can see that Ellie is scared and acting/thinking on her feet(the way she responded that she's from a larger group also). You can also see that her rifle feels heavy to her, she's weak, tired and cold and struggling to even hold her rifle up. But she still goes for it knowing she might not get another chance at food. I, at least, can feel and see the desperation and a lot of nuance in Bellas performance.

  • @troikas3353
    @troikas3353 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    It’s vastly superior having Joel meet her outside. The events inside are not about him. its not about their relationship. Everything that happens until she exits the building is only about her, her fear, her trial, her loss and her survival on her own. I’s the crux of her character arc this season. having him come in hurts that. It’s much more powerful and impactful on both characters having it happen the way it does in the show. It forces her into self reliance, fighting for the agency shes wanted the whole season, and it forces Joel out of being her physical protector and into providing an emotional refuge. He doesn’t know what just happened, she may never tell him. All he knows is that she needs him in a way that requires he finally drop the last of the walls hes had up.

    • @tmm4195

      I feel like that still pretty much happens in the game as well. Joel wasn't there to stop the man and be her protector her. She had to get the job done on her own. Even though Joel walks in on her killing him, he still doesn't know the whole story and how sick that guy was. The importance is still there, just done slightly differently

    If you're constantly going into the series with the expectation of it being almost a one-for-one copy of the game, then you will be sadly disappointed. One of the things Craig Mazin told Neil Druckmann when they went into discussions on the adaptation was just that word: ADAPTATION. It's not supposed to be a direct copy of the game and Druckmann understood and signed off on it. Use certain scenes that are iconic such as the confrontation in Ellie's bedroom between Joel and Ellie about Tommy taking her to Colorado, or Sarah's death, but stop thinking this is the game. It's not. It's for that reason I won't be playing the game. The reason I've seen for most viewers of the series who have played the game have for hating on the series is just that reason. It's not the game. It's not supposed to be. It's its own entity and again Neil Druckmann knew this going in and trusted Craig Mazin to do right by the spirit of the material, not the gospel. These are fleshed out beings, not avatars for YOU the gameplayer.

Joel stopping Ellie does seem like a Joel thing to do, and it is powerful, but there's something more powerful about him not being able to stop her from going that far and having to comfort her after the fact. There’s also the fact that he couldn’t get inside cause everything was locked and david had the keys! What Blake complains about here is just stupid and also an error in the game that was fixed in the series. He hangs up here on the fact that Ellie was able to save herself from the building and not Joel interrupted her while chopping up David. The mistake in the game was explicitly that Joel simply enters a burning building locked by David. How did he get in if David has the keys? I thought it was great what was done here. How long it took for Ellie to finally stop stabbing David on her own. That showed how far away she was in her trauma.

    37:12 I feel you, nothing can beat the game in my opinion, but for those who didn’t play the game they will never notice so what the difference? We still have the game as a fans

    It is extremely refreshing to see Blake having different opinions adjacent to the norm yet appreciating the art of the show. I may not agree with all of his opinions on certain scenes and tones chosen by the show but to hear a differing opinion compared to the thousands out there is why I desperately searched for these reactions again.

    GAMERS HAD MORE TIME IN THE 'David' world. Could put more detail in the game. TV prob had limits on what they could put it.

    Really glad I didn't play the game before watching the show. These guys are getting annoying with their game vs. book rhetoric. IMO.

    They should've divided this episode into two. Everything happened too fast. We should've been given time to hate David. Also, where are the infected?

    Regardless of why they changed it it didn't work out well in comparison. The game was crazy impactful and emotional
