  • Today was the big day. Where we were headed has been described as best “attempted in someone else’s vehicle.” I was anxious about my engine overheating. I had inventoried possible work-arounds, and decided that with a few parts, I could manage around anything except for total fan motor failure - which I was convinced was not the problem. So, on the way out of Hanksville, we stopped at a mechanic’s shop that had proven helpful during a past trip in the area to pick up a couple of things. And then we headed out for adventure. This video covers the trip into The Maze District of Canyonlands National Park, entering at Hans Flat Ranger Station, descending the Flint Trail Switchbacks, driving along the Orange Cliffs to our first night's camp at Teapot Rock. The second half covers the technical drive into Teapot Canyon on our way to our second night's camp at Chimney Rock.
A note for those interested in driving this technical route. This video does a pretty good job showing you the challenges that you'll face. FYI, Matthew's Jeep (silver two door) has stock Rubi KM II tires (32"). My Jeep, of course, has 35s. And Jack's Jeep has 37s. In general, 32s scraped a little here and there. 35s only scraped my OEM tow hitch one time. And 37s did not scrape. Hope that is useful for you, and if you go with smaller tires, be prepared for some scraping noises, though some rough spots had widened trails with an easier bypass. No guarantee the park service will leave those alone, though. :-)
The music is "Campfire Song" by Chris Haugen.
