I get what you mean by "child game". There's a kind of genuine, pure, carefree joy, that we rarely feel as adults. Mario games often capture that feeling.
I agree. There's something about them that taps into the innocent and childlike part of your soul that you could have sworn was bashed to oblivion decades ago through the simple act of existing, never to return. Not many games can do this, but Marios do it seemingly without effort. It's really quite a special thing.
Gusty Garden Galaxy is not only loved by the fans, but Nintendo too: you can hear bits and pieces of this song scattered across the series ever since Galaxy came out. Nintendo knows that they struck absolute gold with this composition, and they have used it as much as they can
Mario Galaxy is significant because it was the first time Nintendo used a real orchestra for the soundtrack, at the time, the devs were against the idea because the felt it would be detrimental to the gameplay. Clearly they were wrong.
@@NuiYabuko They did in fact say that. In an Iwata Asks segment back in the day, Kondo and Yokota mentioned that they were worried using an orchestra would force the player to "play in time" to the music, sacrificing the rhythm of the game. But they eventually realized that it actually enhanced the feel of the game - hence, they were wrong.
@@MrRafaeltrainer No actually, at least not the entire OST, Melee is a little confusing because of Smashing... Live! Which was performed by New Japan Philharmonic. But most of the actual in game music was made digitally.
Super Mario Galaxy is literally in the top 5 greatest video game soundtracks of all time. I don't say that lightly, especially when I adore Xenoblade, SMT/Persona and Sonic the Hedgehog games so much. Super Mario Galaxy is something really, really special.
Super Mario Galaxy was a landmark title for Mario music, it was the first time they used an orchestra for the soundtrack. It's full of amazing songs. To answer your question, there are some pretty awful Mario games out there, Hotel Mario for the CDi, Mario is Missing and Mario's Time Machine for various platforms to name a few. If you're interested, there is a great video called "What Makes Mario Music So Catchy" that goes over some of the composition techniques that Koji Kondo has used and some general characteristics of Mario music.
The song title says the setting, this song has become the defacto theme of Mario Galaxy because Mario Galaxy is a massive adventure in space, the biggest frontier, and a lot of this level this song comes from is bounding from each planetoid to planetoid on a breeze, which kinda captures the entire essence of the game. This song is less about the setting itself but more about the feel of the level, which happens to generalize to the feel of boundless adventure the entire game captures, the wonder of space, the settings being both absurd and wonderful at the same time. Also when it comes to menacing Mario songs, you just havent heard them because they either have not been requested, or have yet to be reacted to, there are many. One of the most recent Mario Games, Bowser's Fury, is one of the most striking examples of this do to a certain re-occurring theme in it, which I won't spoil, it was certainly surprising, I will say that much.
I mean, they did use this for the initial trailer for the game. So Nintendo themselves also pretty much considered this to be the main theme of the game, even though it's far from the first level.
@@thenonexistinghero And its melody is featured in several other pieces across both Mario Galaxy games, not to mention in 3D World's finale level which is itself a whole massive homage to the Galaxy games. And it appears in some other places too, most recently closing out the credits of the Mario movie.
6:20 Innocent. The word you're looking for is innocent. It's not offensive at all, I'd say it's a compliment. Mario is the one franchise where Nintendo tries to keep true to its core spirit. They can make stories, they can make experiences, they can make these amazing video games that make us feel one way or another, they are experts at their field and they have it down to an art. But at the end of the day? They can make toys.
I learned that Koji Kondo didn't actually compose much of the soundtrack of Super Mario Galaxy, but instead worked as the sound director. So he didn't compose the soundtrack, but he got the say of what made it in and what didn't. He is responsible for two of the earlier songs you hear in the game - Good Egg Galaxy and Comet Observatory. The rest of the songs were composed or rearranged by Mahito Yokota
Correct ^^ he did roughly the same amount in Galaxy 2, one planet (Yoshi Star Galaxy), the hub (Starship Mario) and Bowser Jr.'s Fiery Flotilla for some reason
Man I used to play the heck out of this game with my brother and the soundtrack unironically makes my shed tears. The setting, the gameplay, and the music was so charming at the time and now the nostalgia hits even harder. Hoping to see more of Mario Galaxy here ❤.
Seen the movie twice already and hearing this in there definitely just gives you the feels. Even after everything that goes on in the movie, THIS still sticks out.
2:05 I can understand the confusion on the soloist instrument; I was too. It wasn’t until I asked my band director that I finally got the answer: That’s a muted French horn. One of the most beautiful sounds in the orchestra. 🥹
You mentioned struggling with the setting. Mario Galaxy (and Galaxy 2) basically entirely take place in various "galaxies" which correspond to a level. You move around on tiny planets which each have their own gravity which makes things fun. This track plays in "Gusty Garden Galaxy" which is one that has lots of flowers. It was so iconic from the game that it kind of takes the roll of the "main theme" from the game (and leitmotifs from it get reused a lot in Galaxy 2). Also, in Japanese, "o" is always pronounced like "oh" so Koji Kondo is like "Kohji kohndoh."
Funfact: This 2:25 melody was inspired from a song called Evergreen from Barbara Streisand The Gerudo Valley song was inspired from a song in an anime called Dodge Danpei the Mido Arashi theme
I think it was already a bit of a developer favorite before the game came out and it became a fan-favorite, given how parts of its melody are reused in the Purple Comet theme, the Credits theme, and a slow beautiful piano rendition that goes completely unused in-game beyond its intro for some reason but appears in the soundtrack (the intro plays at that moment in the end where Mario says "Welcome New Galaxy!" but it fades out in-game before the piano rendition of Gusty Garden that follows can even be heard. When I finally got the soundtrack CD myself and heard the full piece for the first time it was such an unexpected and beautiful surprise since it's unused and I didn't know it existed previously). And then of course there's even more appearances in Galaxy 2, and Champion's Road in 3D World.
@@legoboy7107Yeah, even though it's not the actual "main theme", this was clearly the one that they really put their all into. I like the slower tempo parts of this ost since I feel like it encapsulates the 'lonely' feel of the game. Being in space, exploring galaxies, away from home. Even the new Princess from this game, Rosalina, has a very lonely story. As a kid, of course I enjoyed the journey, saving the princess and kicking Bowser's ass but what really immersed me was the atmosphere of this game. Mario I think has been adopted as a quasi symbol for Japan. When you have the prime minister of Japan emerging from a pipe dressed like Mario for the closing ceremony of the Rio Olympics to signal it would be in Tokyo in 4 years, it's stopped being just a game series a long ago. It had its "oh my god, we've created a global craze" moment with terrible movies and TV shows in the 80s and early 90s, but it never really had any bad releases that hurt it *coughFFXIIIcough* aside from its longtime status as being consistently family-friendly losing teenagers and young adults that want something with an edge.

Ironically, one of the largest Mario failures was a remake of one of their best successes. There’s a game called “Mario and Luigi: bowsers inside story” that came out on the ds, and it was a game SO many people loved. It was part of this “Mario and Luigi” series where Mario and Luigi go on rpg-esque adventures, and there were a few games in that series. Though the developers in 2018 decided to remake that game after they remade the first game in the series, and it flopped HARD. The problem was that they released it on the 3DS, which was a handheld that could already play the original game on it, so many didn’t see much of a reason to get the new one since it didn’t add that much of value compared to the original. That games failure lead to the closing of the company that worked under Nintendo to make it to close

Mario's one big flop was 'Hotel Mario' on the Philips CD-I...and yet despite flopping at the time, the cutscenes were a major part of the genesis of 'TH-cam Poop' videos, so even Mario's biggest failure has a cultural footprint.
In terms of Dark Mario themes. The creepiest one is the fortress theme from Mario 3. Something about it makes me think Bowser could be the darkest of all video game villains.

Koji Kondo didn't actually write most of the music for galaxy. On a somewhat unrelated note, he did do something incredible very early in Nintendo history. The first Zelda game was actually supposed to have an existing song called Bolero as its theme. However, the copyright was still in place. 24 hours before the game's deadline, Koji Kondo was told to make a new theme for the game, and he created one of the most iconic video game themes in history
Another popular song in the VGM community, I experienced it when I found the soundtrack CD in a ditch in my neighborhood. Super grand and epic with a wonderful melody, live instruments really breathed a lot of life into this composition. great chords and guitar strumming quickly keeps the pace going super well. It feels very heroic and adventurous too, a very nostalgic sound that just brings happiness. It's a song that just makes you smile; there's a lot of subtle dynamics going on and I give props to the conductor. I just noticed they used a harp. It's hard not to love this piece, it's widely beloved and I see why.
To answer your question about anything Mario that has failed, what comes to mind is the Hotel Mario game for the Phillips CD-i. Basically Sony was developing a CD-ROM drive for the SNES, but then Nintendo broke the agreement, so Nintendo went to Phillips to create it, but Nintendo wanted out of the partnership, and as a condition of getting out of it, Nintendo had to license some of their characters to Phillips for the CD-i. There were 4 licensed Nintendo games, Hotel Mario, and 3 Legend of Zelda games: Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon, Zelda's Adventure, and Link: The Faces of Evil. All of them are considered some of the worst games of all time, and are considered non-canon, and Nintendo really wants you to forget about their existence. The CD-i was a commercial failure, with around 1 million units in use in 1994, with 400,000 units being sold in the US over it's lifetime.
Best video game of all time, with the best soundtrack of all time. I think this song is pretty overrated, but it's still in the top 5 in the game. Would love to hear you check out Gateway Galaxy, Buoy Base Galaxy, or Final Battle with Bowser sometime!
The OST's for both Galaxy games are phenomenal and back up what always felt like some of the most immaculately polished games you'll find. Part of that is probably nostalgia talking, but these games really are impressive, and the music for them is timeless. As far as flopped Mario games go... i guess the remake of Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story. The original was a fantastic RPG on the DS, but then they remade it on 3DS... one console generation apart, on a system with backwards compatability. The developer, Alpha Dream, was already kind of on their last leg, and this remake basically sealed their fate. The remake sold very poorly, and now Alpha Dream sadly is no more. Next, while I don't think it did bad commercially, Paper Mario: Sticker Star deserves a mention for possibly being the most actively resented Mario game there is. That is a whole can of worms, though. I wager you can find plenty of discussion and analysis videos going into detail on that if you're curious and have some time to kill. There's also a couple of sports games most people would rather forget exist, if they haven't done so already, like Mario Sports Superstars on 3DS or Mario Tennis Ultra Smash. They just kind of... exist. But as far as the core series goes? The 2D and 3D platforming games? I don't think there's anything in particular you can point at and call a real flop.
Have you ever considered doing some playthroughs of Mario games? You could start with Mario 3 and Super Mario World, which had level systems that are a lot more Let's Play friendly (although they can get quite difficult), then go to Super Mario 64, then Mario Sunshine, then Mario Galaxy (and Mario Galaxy 2), then Mario Odyssey.
8:30 It's hard to say what the "worst" Mario game was in the mainline Mario games, the main platformer style ones anyway. Mario is attached to everything, soccer, tennis, golf, etc. The Mario games on the Wii U performed the worst, but also had a very bad sales base with the WiiU sales doing so poorly. New Super Mario Bros U on the WiiU sold 5.8 million, New Super Luigi U sold 3 million. These were combined and rereleased on the Nintendo Switch in a New Super Mario Bros Deluxe combining both games, and sold 17.6 million. Comparing sales numbers to player base that owns a system, probably the worst performance was Super Mario Galaxy 2 in 2010 with 7.4 million sales, considering how well the Wii itself sold.
I don't know Why...But I'm sure that a lot of people request? "Family" from this Game...and is really special Why? Well in the future you know(maybe) 😊😊
Mario games are mostly good but there was a load of edu-tainment back in the day that are just barely a game: mario is missing, mario teaches typing. Stuff like that. Mario party games will ALWAYS sell well but it's the most inconsistent franchise having most of the worst mario games outright. Thankfully galaxy is genuinely one of the best mario games.
The only Mario flops were made by third parties in the early days, edutainment-type games like "Mario Teaches Typing". So no, no mainstream Mario game has really been a flop in terms of quality or great music. Personally not a huge fan of the "New Super Mario Bros." series of games but even those have catchy tunes and sold well.

@@jellycore1316 Yeah. Maybe one day we’ll get another game from some of the people that worked at AlphaDream before it went under, but for now there’s no hope for that unfortunately.
Also, everybody had already moved on to the Switch by then.
ah mario galaxy, one of the first games who embraced a fully orchestrated soundtrack (said soundtrack even being called ''famous'' because of that fact)
hope you'll listen to more mario galaxy in the future!
This song fits well enough because it sets the tone for an exciting journey in space. The level had an grassy/earthy feel to it with some puzzles.
It's not an intro level, you need 4 grand stars to access it.
@@D1ab0lical My mistake. I was getting it confused with the introductory planets.
@@malachihill8677 Probably thinking of Good Egg Galaxy, it sounds similar.
I found your channel through the Skyrim, Zelda, and Assassin's Creed reaction. I don't really know Final Fantasy so I haven't watched anything in a bit. But seeing this and Jump Up Super Star today was awesome!
3 Mario games in a row? Noice...also this game has the best soundtrack of any Mario game hope u hear the rest someday
"I haven't heard anything scary or sad yet..."
Oh, if you want those emotions, Galalxy has those in spades as well.
Mario's one big flop was 'Hotel Mario' on the Philips CD-I...and yet despite flopping at the time, the cutscenes were a major part of the genesis of 'TH-cam Poop' videos, so even Mario's biggest failure has a cultural footprint.
it's really telling they knew they struck gold with this theme that the purple coin comet theme is a remix of this
In terms of Dark Mario themes.
The creepiest one is the fortress theme from Mario 3. Something about it makes me think Bowser could be the darkest of all video game villains.
This is literally a perfect video game song, and the perfect song in general. This cannot be topped probably
People...jess is playing legend of dragoon and will soon play Chrono trigger...im kinda speechless...he's on fire now hahahaha
Jess, i'm Absolutely 200% glad that you have a new found love for this precise era of jrpgs (from ff6/chrono trigger to ff9/legend of mana and even ff10). You can clearly feel the love they put into those.
As you saw, The 3d characters in beautiful prerendered backgrounds is a style that always contributed kn creating a good illusion of being transported by the world. (Is it partially because of this that you started chrono trigger to get to Cross ?)
Anyway....im a really talkative when it comes to rpgs done with passion. Have a good day my Friend.
I feel the same pal. Specially for giving FF9 a chance. That’s a real cool ass move to be making when you’re new to JRPGs.
Super Mario Galaxy's OST just hits different, the franchise itself has fantastic music, but Galaxy was EXTREMELY good.
Realy super Mario galaxy was my first video game on the Nintendo wii so dis music means A lot to me because dis was my first game
8:25 Two words. Phillips CDI.
Bro this is like composing the 9th Symphony, but this is super mario
This is my favorite song in the entire franchise!!
8:15 Hotel Mario
"Im strugling with the setting im not getting anything"
I mean its space so youre not wrong
One of the best Mario songs, period.
When I first heard that song I cried really hard
Amazing song
You should add "Koopa's Road" from Mario 64 to this little marathon.
That name might be off, but it's the theme for the Boss stages.
The Galaxy games each also have their own renditions of that theme.
Purple comet is my favourite song from galaxy.
For a long time, it was a toss up between Rainbow Road 64 and Dire, Dire Docks. Gusty Garden completes the triangle.
This is a good song but Space Junk and good egg are definitely my favorite
Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 are basically the best 3D Mario games yet! =D
Definitively worth playing through! =)
(both the game, and the OST)
The greatest 3D platformer ever created
IT HAPPENED
One Question he has completed FF9 but where is the Video? Dont say he didnt upload the last Episode of the Gameplay 😰
Aw i'm sad we didn't get "big bad baby bowser" for this mario selection, would have bien right up jessie's alley
that or "fury bowser"
Playing a new 3D Mario is asking to be happy in my opinion.
So now he need to listen to in the final from bowsers inside story
The Grand Finale?
@@dave_the_slick8584yes
Yes
I don't think there's anything in particular you can point at and call a real flop.
surprised I haven’t seen anyone make any Sexy Luigi references in the comments
I'm sure you don't have time to play every game you listen to the OST for. But I would recommend you consider playing Mario Galaxy
Yea, Mario music is a total ear worm, as catchy as anything can be
And by darker vibe stuff id suggest the bowser theme from mario 64
Have you ever considered doing some playthroughs of Mario games? You could start with Mario 3 and Super Mario World, which had level systems that are a lot more Let's Play friendly (although they can get quite difficult), then go to Super Mario 64, then Mario Sunshine, then Mario Galaxy (and Mario Galaxy 2), then Mario Odyssey.
For a darker Mario song, try Bonneton from Super Mario Odyssey.
Can we request a Lufia 2 song ? I'm sure there are some he would appreciate for sure !
Super cool!
Oooh do buoy base
i fully recomend you to react some fire emblem fates OST, the whole soundtrack is fire
I don't know Why...But I'm sure that a lot of people request? "Family" from this Game...and is really special
Why? Well in the future you know(maybe) 😊😊
You need to play a 3D Mario one day. Just for context.
He should listen to world bowser from super Mario 3D world.
Do streets of rage music! Any of them including 4!
Suggestion: chaos theme 123 -dissidia 012
The only Mario flops were made by third parties in the early days, edutainment-type games like "Mario Teaches Typing". So no, no mainstream Mario game has really been a flop in terms of quality or great music.
Personally not a huge fan of the "New Super Mario Bros." series of games but even those have catchy tunes and sold well.
Yeah, even bad Mario games are average when compared to other videogames.
Nintendo takes this IP very seriously. Even if Nintendo is not the best as a company or in terms of powerful consoles, they are still great game developers.
@@NuiYabuko Oh, I meant in a business sense and their relationship with consumers (like high prices for old stuff), my bad english showing up I guess
I think Mario's hotel flopped lol
Super mario sunshine was a flop. Its the one everyone hates.
The paper mario and mario & luigi series have both dwindled or faded away too sadly
@@NuiYabuko it being a gamecube game means it sold quite a bit less than other mario games.
Plus the criticisms
Super Paper Mario was good but after that it has gone downhill and well
Alphadream went bankrupt so
