Fun fact: This performance by James Brown was one of the two only performances in the movie that was recorded as it happened rather than previously being recorded in a studio and then played back (the other being John Lee Hooker's song). The reason was that James, being the energetic legend he was, didn't manage to perform the song the same way twice. Goes to show the passion and authenticity he put into it
+Royce Noble i have to join i'm catholic and stopped going to church because it was so boring some fella speaking latin drinking wine in a way that looks sneaky and most of the time has his back to us just to turn around and judge gays
Totally agree , Even being 40 laters , this film delivers quite a few message , subtly Through the comedy . There is history , with legendary performers , James Brown , Ray Charles , Cab Callaway Ms Franklin , The " red necks " and the Blues Brother switching to Raw Hide theme to calm down the crowd ,the Nuns , the Church Service , Squashing the Nazis The Choreography , And I don't think the film won any Academy Awards ( Oscars ) .I could be wrong but .. The comedy is terrific , it could be a documentary. it's could also political , satirical in a way .
No doubt , This movie is so vastly underrated .The combination of white guys , and them really honoring the talents the original " pioneers " of R&B , Gospel , Blues , and all those legends having a small but oh so powerful delivery on the big screen that really made the public aware of the immense talents of those wonderful singers , irregardless of their handclaps , Ray Charles , Aretha , James Brown and on Cab geez . THe sound track is fabulous but the dancing , was so very fantastic and realistic , the diner scene with the 3 everyday looking working class patrons and how The Brothers blend in is one of the greatest of all time .This film will always be to me not only from the comedy aspect , but how they brought out the great performances , with the characters really putting their true passion of how they pursued their talent , Awesome
Extraordinary job in becoming the Soul Brother, original James Brown Music is Generously heard through Out the Movie Soundtrack, It is almost a Mini Concert in Retrospect, James Brown is no Saint, but He is of good intention and so enthrawling that in ones heart could forgive his failings.
He does ONE SONG in the soundtrack. What are you talking about "Generously heard"? Are you mistaking him with Ray Charles or John Lee Hooker? No idea what you're talking about.
As a young man after watching and listening to this movie it made me realize that I don't know anything about music. It opened up my breath of what I used to find as great. Added note - god bless you godfather of soul.
The greatest movie, in our opinion! We go to our church like this, in our neighborhood here in Oakland, California, every Sunday! Amazing! Long live the memories of John & James! xoxo The Clarences (robert, erin & leslie)
You can tell this was one take. Look at James hair at the end lol This was a real concert filmed and put in the movie. Yall know James dont play. So incredible. I'm from the southside of Chicago. My Uncle used to go to this church in the 80's.
I remember when i was around 14 and i discovered this movie i already was a big fan of old music thanks to my dad.... At my school we had Fridays where we used to bring a movie and watch it every friday and just relax :) I took this movie every friday until i left the school a year later because everyone in my class were listening to techno and terrible rap music so i wanted to introduce them to what i myself considered REAL music played by actual musicians with instruments... But they rejected it every time... I feel sorry for them today... Its kinda like the Elwood Speech in Blues brothers 2000 :)
My first time I went to Church, I was pissed because I thought James Brown and Chaka Khan would be there!!!!!! No flipping or acrobatics!! Got my money back and never went back!!!!
I am a Atheist as long as i can remember but damn... If curch would be like this it´d be like: " PRAISE JESUS CHRIST IN ALL HIS GLORY, AND PRAISE GOD FOR GIVIN US THE FUNK! "
Alonzo Atkins the short Choir director originally had sung in the choir of this song on Aretha's Amazing Grace album. If you see the screening you'll see him seated in the left side of the choir. Chaka is so pretty.
Let us all (All go back) To the Old (Old landmark) Let us all to the Old (All go back Old Landmark) Let us stay in the service of the Lord Jesus, ohh! I'm sorry my mistake the church is on the corner of 91st and Burley one block over from Brandon. Pictures on the church's website show the inside looking just like the movie, although the isle was much wider for dancing and flippin. When I first saw that in the movie I was kind of offended. It seemed to highlight some kind of buffoonery associated with black churches in the eyes of white people who have no idea about "catching the spirit"
Fun fact: This performance by James Brown was one of the two only performances in the movie that was recorded as it happened rather than previously being recorded in a studio and then played back (the other being John Lee Hooker's song). that is an awesome fact
Aretha Franklin had the same problem. She’s a live performer, so sing different every time. They had to use clever editing to make it look good. FYI
YESSUH
WOULD NOT WANT IT ANY OTHER WAY
Aretha also
I’m an agnostic on a good day. But if there were a church this lively, I’d be there every Sunday. Bank on it.
There is no way possible to watch this and not get into a good mood!
Once you realize how much of a beautiful musical celebration this movie is, you have reached enlightenment.
I love James Brown!!!! :-)
R.I.P Godfather Of Soul :-(
Janece Motley Me too
And whats interesting is that this is Aretha's Version from the Album "Amazing Grace" God rest her soul .
RIP James Brown & Aretha Franklin ❤️🙏 The gods of gospel, blues, funk and soul !!
Beautifully written, but Mr. Brown hated the blues.
R.i.e.p John Lee Hooker
Still my favourite scène in blues brothers
Incredible dancing 😀
The energy kicks holy ass!
This movie still messes me up when i think about it dude it had everything you could possibly want in a movie
I have been to a Church Of God In Christ and they get down this way it's awesome.
+Royce Noble i have to join i'm catholic and stopped going to church because it was so boring some fella speaking latin drinking wine in a way that looks sneaky and most of the time has his back to us just to turn around and judge gays
Go for Christ. Not for this
That's James Cleveland Choir
I could see James Brown as a pastor.
You just saw James Brown as a pastor.
He was in real life, believe it or not.
I officially have been saved after just seeing this Epic Praise. LEGENDARY PERFORMANCE

One of the best movies ever made...
I'm guessing you haven't seen many movies. CLASSIC, I'd agree with.
You mean the best
No doubt , This movie is so vastly underrated .The combination of white guys , and them really honoring the talents the original " pioneers " of R&B , Gospel , Blues , and all those legends having a small but oh so powerful delivery on the big screen that really made the public aware of the immense talents of those wonderful singers , irregardless of their handclaps , Ray Charles , Aretha , James Brown and on Cab geez . Thank You and RIP , Legends that really left this place better than when they found it . Might be imitated but NEVER duplicated !!!
"Jake are you alright?" He'll no he's not alright. He found the spirit big time.
He sholl did...he was in the spirit of the lord
That Spirit hit him hard 💯
HALLELUJAH!!!! THANK THE LORD ABOVE FOR THIS SCENE!
The funkiest man that ever breathed air in rare form. WOW
Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise.

If praising God doesn't feel like this... then you best find yourself a new church!
As a young man after watching and listening to this movie it made me realize that I don't know anything about music.
It opened up my breath of what I used to find as great. Added note - god bless you godfather of soul.
The Choir Director in the Church Scene, Alonzo Atkins passed away today! RIH Lonzo! Please pray for his family!
the dancers are awesome!
I love this scene
The greatest movie, in our opinion!
We go to our church like this, in our neighborhood here in Oakland, California, every Sunday! Amazing!
Long live the memories of John & James!

Anyone notice Chaka Khan in the Choir at 2:27?
tjbdallas2 She is a real powerhouse diva. I love her incredible vocal style
Yeah, love Chaka's music. She's from Chicago. Born in the same place where I went to Corps School. Great Lakes Naval Hospital.

I needed this today🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌

I've always joked that if I went to a Black church growing up, I might've actually turned out Christian.
Aretha does a version of Old Landmark also. Just like James Brown, she really brings it.
god bless America to have black people.... America wouldn't America without them in sports, music....

Great!
Downvote for only being a partial scene. It cuts out way before the end of the song.
True statement. Fail.
Muchkin?
+John Perkins Don't people start flying and flipping through the air after this? That's what I remember.
this one has the longer scene th-cam.com/video/xbq0OuJtErs/w-d-xo.html

This is a real church here in Chicago. Pilgrim Baptist church. They still having services. 91st and Brandon on Chicago's southeast side.
I'm sorry my mistake the church is on the corner of 91st and Burley one block over from Brandon.
