Down here it's a universal common lexicon between all people, if you meet someone whose name you don't know you call them mate as a term of friendly greeting as you also do with the very best of friends. We don't stand on convention here and pride ourselves on our egalitarian outlook towards each other as a distinct break from the class system of our forebears from the UK. In the current environment of those idiotic pronouns the use of the term mate actually defeats the intent of these in their entirety so is in fact quite useful. As a woman that loves to shoot pool and play chess, I have been on a mission to figure out WHY men dominate these fields. I win against men all the time, obviously amateur play, but on a professional level we lose. In pool we used to think it was the break, but we've overcome that hurdle.

The real question is, why have a separate tourney for men and women?
Because there aren't an equal number of women (yet) playing against men. This lowers the average performance rating of women as many choose something else in a generally male-dominated activity. When the numbers improve, I imagine they'll end the different tourneys and have only one.
Women suck at chess, apparently.
Men are far better at chess on average. Our brains are more suited to it then women's brains.

As a former competitive chess player, I find it strange that a player that nobody ever heard of, and that nobody had ever played against, would suddenly pop up out of nowhere and beat everyone, and not raise a few eyebrows. Especially if that person never spoke a word to other women at a women's tournament. But he got caught, so I guess suspicions were raised. And they're right about the FGM thing, another case of "it's OK when we do it."

It all proves that there are differences between men and women and no male can ever be a woman. It all goes back to DNA, your gender is something that affects you clear down to the basic cell layer. That is not to say one gender is above the other, they just have different strengths .

If it happened here, they would just let him win because they're totally not going to claim that men have an unfair advantage in something like chess.
What advantage does being a male give in chess? Physical size and strength have no effect upon the game whatsoever. As a lifelong player, some of my most patient and formidable opponents have been female. The only advantage would be that there are far fewer female players, thus a smaller challenger pool to work through, not quality of players.
Im 100% against this craziness.... but how does a man have any advantage over a woman in chess?

Women, by testing, tend to be better than men in social interactions. It actually starts at a very early age well before puberty.
It's also why so many men consider women manipulative since in social interactions, they tend to perform better. And yes, the interaction between 2 people is still a social interaction.

Okay, I can't be upset about the chess player because chess is not a battle over body differences. It doesn't take more upper body strength to move a chess piece from one square to another. Also, the human mind isn't stronger in one g3nd3r over another. He was a cheater, for sure, but trying to compare this story to what's happening in this dystopian nightmare we're living is comparing apples to oranges. The difference here is that if he had tried to claim he was something he wasn't, he may very well have been jailed or executed for it. Not every country, particularly African countries, is on board with this garbage.

It's the general lack of participation by women. Since chess has largely been seen as a men's activity, women traditionally haven't played competitively. 15% of "licensed" players are women, simply due to the lack and not discrimination against them, which limits the number to play against men.

i remember when fox was against teenage girls playing HS football on the boys team. but i remember women going to court to let it happen. so the irony of women facing their own BS keeps me in stictches.
The idea isn't that girls or women are "unfairly" playing on boys or mens teams, but that some boys and men are taking advantage of obvious genetic differences and advantages to the detriment of REAL girls and women. Lia Thomas went from being in 200+ in the mens rankings to the top 10 in womens, without ever drastically improving his times. The same goes for those imposters running track in high schools.
The fight against girls playing on boys teams had more to do with protecting them from a generally larger male, who'd likely injure those who are less physically able to withstand injuries (less muscle, smaller bone mass and density).
there shouldn't be separate chess competitions for men and women to start with. this is not a function of muscle mass but mental ability, and men and women have equal mental capabilities, right?
Nope, it's not a case of being smarter than women it's the differences in how the brain "wiring" is different between men and women.
The top women players are not competitive against the top men players. It doesn't mean they are inferior, just different.

There's fewer women playing in chess, which brings the average ability down for that gender. Once chess is seen less as a male activity and more women are participating, we'll see women generally improve and start taking the top levels.

When I was teaching at a university in Saudi Arabia, we (the women) had to remove our abayas and hijabs after we went through the gate and before entering the main women-only area. This was to ensure no men were sneaking in. 😅
