The accuracy of public surveys depend on the methodology, the random size, the questionaire design , etc. Any logical person, looking at the situation in HK will doubt the respondents would respond in a manner in favour of the rioters. These opposition members seem to stand on the side of the rioters who are practising the most heinous form of violence. How can you blame police. You mean Hong Kongers don't want police enforcement? Police job is LAW ENFORCEMENT!! It is not brutality in the face of criminal violence when police ENFORCE LAW! Only Western hypocrite will criticise such enforcements. It should not come from peace loving people.
Many media outlets also claim that there are one,two million protesters. However, Reuters did a per square feet count and the result is only 260,000. This may be by no means 100% accurate but at less there is a basis to the result instead of coming out with a figure with no formula to the calculation. It does not matter how many media outlets come out with the poll results as long as they are transparent with their methodology then, it is acceptable. However, poll results are more reliable if they are carried out by professional, independent bodies. Media outlets, institutions and other bodies with their own agenda can influence the poll results, if the survey sample is tilted heavily in favour of their political stands. If your sample consists mainly of protest sympathisers or mainly of the silent majority, you will get two different set of results.

Online polls do not have a proven record of accuracy. This is because participants are demographically different from non-participants. Plus those with a particular viewpoint maybe more motivated to volunteer making the survey unrepresentative. The survey by the academic, I think should be professionally carried out. Yes, the results showed a high per cent of negativity towards the HKPF. However, also noted are the facts that there are disputes in HK over his research methodology and the fact that he will release poll results at very sensitive timings. Now, timing is crucial. If you interview a participate during a period where there is an adverse news on the topic, the results would be distorted. If you carry the survey after the fake news have been debunked, you would have a totally different result. Polls are just a food for analysis and cross reference , it is not to be swallowed whole. I think the HK police as a whole is very restrained and professional based on what I saw on TH-cam. Unfortunately, some media show only the HKPF reaction without showing the protesters' action . Opinons from police force in other territories, including Spore concerning the HKPF confirmed my sentiments. Please understand I am not on either side of the HK political divide. As a ethnic Chinese, it pain us to see HK descends into such a chaotic society. Wishing HK all the best.
