    4 year apprentice ship. 40 years journeyman lineman. 10 years retired. I miss linework everyday. They say if you like your job, it’s not work. Belt and hooks hanging in the garage. I worked with some excellent line hands and good friends over the years. I was blessed. Safety is # 1 priority. If it ain’t grounded, it ain’t dead.

    Just because you have a paper saying you have credentials to be means next to nothing in the trades. Good that you appreciate your time doing less than lineman work. Young tradesmen need to understand that scaling the ladder to success is a real thing. I've been a lineman for 20 yrs and it requires a high level of knowledge and skill to perform so everyone goes home every night. Young people need to earn trust and it takes time. Seasoned lineman need to show a bit of grace and help the young. So much of the job requires trust (and tons of hard work), and that trust is built by being the grunt, getting the muddiest, and keeping the equipment ready. No one will cry for you when you have to work on Christmas, but they all will cry when their power goes out on Christmas.
    Basically, suck it up, stick with it, and you will have the most rewarding career possible and find brothers and sisters you never knew you had!

    • @Artecus

      I am guessing your father started the apprenticeship between 38 and 43 as a first step? We notice older guys do much better in the line apprenticeship than young guys. Maturity, physical endurance, aptitude to learn, responsibility, discipline, and so on. My foreman did finance at a desk as a manager, went blue collar, and rocked it. He started at 41, graduated at 44. An instructor in my class was a school teacher for a long time before joining, also started later.

    You have to start somewhere, at the beginning only makes sense! My first year was spent on the end of a set of jobbers! I was in SW Missouri NW Arkansas.1 or 2 inches of topsoil if I was lucky-5’10” of rock! Air drill, jack hammer, frost bar were the only tools I used for the first year! Well except for a pair of Klein’s I kept in my back pocket. It wasn’t easy for sure,but it was part of it, I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything! It’s what gives you character, and let’s your journeyman know what you are made of. Training comes to you in steps, when you complete one you advance to the next. Be patient. BE SAFE! Trust those who are training you. Remember the only stupid question is the one that ISN’T asked. Good luck! Remember if isn’t grounded, it isn’t dead

  • @acescape88
    @acescape88 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Biggest con in this line of work is the "schools" that say you have to complete to begin your apprenticeship. Although the climbing training can be useful, it is completely unnecessary. You can start this line of work as a groundhand (grunt) without any training or knowledge of electricity. The best training is on the job training. Dont throw your money at these con artists

    • @HabituaILineStepper
      @HabituaILineStepper หลายเดือนก่อน

      I regret paying $30k for Lincoln tech, but I really had zero connections or knew no one in the electrical field so I figured the school and certification would give me a better shot. With that being said, I’m upset since they don’t even offer any lineman courses. I’ve got 2 months left of trade school for electricians, but now I’m really eyeing the lineman field.

  • @jadenbrijalba1823
    @jadenbrijalba1823 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Hey brotha quick question, when you signed for all the books in your northwest area.. did you have to have line school experience to get picked up for the apprenticeship. Or is it just an added bonus? Im thinking of doing what you did, but only in the southwest, no line school

    • @nope642
      @nope642 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No you don’t need line school to be an apprentice. Start as a groundman and work your way up. With no certs or anything, you will most likely be at book 4. Lineman school can bump you up to book 3 . But it does cost a lot of money. Either way it will be a pretty long wait

    If you don't like paying money you can join job corps, (for troubled youth 16-24 that helps em get jobs) you have to do a basic class before doing an advanced trade (which OHL is) I'd say go to the Kentucky JC if you don't have ur CDL then go to Gary JC or whatever other JC that offers the lineman trade.

      Do communications/aerial/telecom line work. Very easy way to get into the line trade. The company I applied for doesn’t require a CDL until after 6 months. A lot of lineman I know started out at telecom side, the whole time working on telecom side signed the books for the union for the apprenticeship. Union or not, you’ll get a lot of experience on telecom side from climbing, operating trucks, tools, and just being near lines in general. It’ll look very good on your resume.

    Look for jobs in telephone or cable tv. They have main line too and need climbers bad

      When you say telephone you mean like Verizon and AT&T? I live in east texas and want to become a lineman but I’m 35 and couldn’t afford to be without a job after completing linesman school.

      @@bowtiebuilding yeah, main line telephone and cable tv. Actual telephone copper is a bitch to build, but most places are building fiber. Telephone and cable bothe build fiber the same way. It's good experience. Look for contractors for att or dpectrum/comcast

      Poor young men who get into an amazing blue-collar career and live very rich successful lives... But hey here's a college degree, 200k in debt, and a job you hate that pays 40k a year... Maybe if the school system did its job and didn't make blue-collar workers look deplorable we wouldn't have to be on here educating people ourselves.

    Those “lineman schools” are a huge waste of money and are just a glorified climbing school. Go through the IBEW apprenticeship or get on with a utility that will put you through school. For the ones that have gone through a “lineman school”, YOU’RE NOT A LINEMAN!

      How do I find a utility that would do that around me? Sorry for asking but Google doesn't list a lot of them unfortunately

      @@SquidCena You just need to keep an eye out for utilities hiring apprentices in your area. I would strongly suggest getting your CDL A.

      @@SquidCena I did all the book work in house then went to a driving school to do my driving test then went to the dmv to take the test to get my license. I’d say it probably took about a month. I’m in Florida so I’m not sure if you can do it the same way where you’re at.

    I just washed this full video pretty much. He just talks about how much money he makes. is there only explain and too much detail on how to go about apprenticeship.
