13:53 If anyone's wondering why Psycho Soldier is here, it's (arguably) the first game to have an actual vocal theme song, sung by an idol from the time. Although it was so heavily compressed that it was only barely audible in-game.

Nice to see Segaiden has entered the Mark III era. Teddy Boy Blues has a nice chiptune theme and is pretty good arcade port action for 1985. And the Mark III coverage is a nice Christmas gift. As is the Miku invented Minecraft joke/meme.

I grew up in France, where the Master System wasn't nearly as hot as it was in the UK or Brazil. I do remember having one friend who had a Master System and a whole bunch of games. I always loved the system myself, particularly the gorgeous, bright colour palette that was quite similar to the Amstrad CPC's (the gaming device of choice for most French gamers at the time). The SMS feels like a story of lost potential to me. Although it clearly has superior graphics and a decent number of worthwhile games, there's no doubt the NES has a superior library of games, just by virtue of it having so many more games and many by better developer (no matter which way you look at it, Capcom, Konami and Sunsoft were simply better than the likes of Infogrames). If only the Master System had been more popular in Japan, it could have been a treasure trove of great arcade conversions like the PC-Engine. Heck, a lot of Sega's own arcade conversions on the system are thoroughly decent.
I finally got myself a Master System in 2013, and I use it fairly regularly. The Monster World series alone is worth the price of admission. It also has a better playing conversion of the almighty Outrun than the Mega Drive, imo, and Hang-On, which was the built-in game on my system, is just a stunning game for its time. So smooth.
It's a cool little system, and I wish it had a bigger homebrew scene to show us what could have been.

Did you ever buy an Amstrad GX4000? They were really counting on France for sales as the CPC was so popular there.

    • @Jayce_Alexander
      @Jayce_Alexander 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Larry No, I didn't. I went from the 464 to the 6128plus, and then on to the Amiga. Although I vaguely remember seeing the GX4000 in stores, I don't believe I ever saw the system in action until Xyphoe played through the entire game catalogue on one of his livestreams (apart from the elusive Chase HQ, of course :P).
As far as I know it flopped every bit as hard in France as it did in the UK. The GX4000 does have a pretty great Robocop II game, though! And Pang and Switchblade are good conversions.

I'd say the Master System was a pretty strong upgrade over the SG-1000. So many consoles from the early 1980s used that same basic ColecoVision/MSX template, but the SMS is a considerable step up, to the point where its later games and a few titles on its cousin the Game Gear approach 16-bit quality in color and detail. They even put Gunstar Heroes on the Game Gear... I imagine if you tried the same on the SG-1000, the damn thing would smoke and explode!

  • @LeoFan93

An interesting thing about Teddy Boy Blues was it got not one, not two, but THREE releases on the Mega Drive/Genesis. First as a downloadable title from Sega's Meganet service, second on a Sega CD compilation of some of those downloadable games and third on another Sega CD compilation; a collection of Mega Drive titles whose music has been swapped out with melodic covers of Sega games from the J-pop group B.B. Queens. Funny how Teddy Boy Blues effectively bounced from one musical talent to another at the end of the game's life.

re: 4:21: Both the FC/NES and SMS required expansion chips on the cart, in as much the game was larger than 32KB (NES) and 48KB (SMS). There are two ways the SMS definitely trumps the NES:
-NES has eight, 3 color palettes; 4 go to the BG, 4 for sprites. A sprite or BG tile is limited to the 3 colors of a single palette. SMS has two, 16-color palettes. A tile can use any combination of the 16 colors.
-SMS can put 512 different tiles on the BG. In practice, it's probably not possible to have 512 tiles in vram and a proper tile map, but at least you won't go mad trying to fit all the BG assets in 256 tiles. While you can use some tricks to get around the limit, the NES is basically limited to 256 BG tiles by default.

Alex Kidd lifts so much from Teddy Boy Blues... Even the death animation!
The Mark III is awesome. It looks better than the Master System, in my opinion. It was a nice companion system to the more popular Famicom, in my opinion. I love it to death. I don't get why Sega decided to rebrand it later as the Master System in Japan too. They should've went from the Mark III directly to the Mega Drive. Unfortunately, they have a history of coming up with too many consoles in a short period of time.

Shame that "Hang-On" has no music but I always thought the doppler sound effect you hear as you pass by other bikes was so cool. Two channels(maybe more?) are already out for the roar of the engine and maybe there just wasn't room.
Also 'teddy boys' were mainly a UK phenomenon, they were the British equivalent of USA's greasers and rockers, but they were much more style-conscious, and wore neat, cloth suits like Elvis and Little Richard did in many of their formal television appearances when they had to look at least decently professional - and more importantly the teds were the precursors to the mod subculture of the 60s, when they took the fancy suit idea and expanded on it, bringing us the decade where everybody wanted to dress like James Bond or the Beatles... or Austin Powers.

I'm constantly astonished when I see how good the Mk. III/Master System looked back in its day. I never really got to see much of it when I was a kid, only ever once getting to play a bit on a demonstration copy of a Master System II that had been set up in an electronics store with the built-in game (pretty sure it was Alex Kidd in Miracle World) running on it, and I didn't get very far, being only about maybe 5 or 6 years old at the time. But I'm stunned at how much better its graphics were than the NES. Honestly, they were almost as good as the Genesis/Mega Drive, which I've always considered _significantly_ weaker than the SNES by comparison. Have you ever actually compared Phantasy Star on the Master System to Phantasy Star II on the Genesis? The original actually looks MUCH better!

Oh hell yeah, I’ve been waiting for this, the Mark III or Master System just doesn’t get as much love as I think it should, there’s some damn good games on that thing, but it still remains relatively obscure, and worse, seemingly largely unresearched. One flaw with the design of the Mark III/Master System is that the pause button is on the console instead of on the controllers. That might not have been a problem in Japan where controller cords were shorter and players were used to sitting close to the console, but it was annoying for western players who sat farther away from the console. It's especially annoying when playing games in which the pause button is used to access menus.

Maybe the soundtrack wasn't included so the game could fit on the card format. Hang On was also released on combo cartridges with Safari Hunt or Astro Warrior. Sega is known to have made cuts to other Master System games, most likely to reduce memory size. The North American and European versions of Enduro Racer are missing half the tracks and other images found in the Japanese version. The US version of Captain Silver is missing stages and enemies found in the Japanese, European, and Canadian versions.

Am I the only one who really didn't care if there was music in games or not? I'd always play a CD from my own collection anyway.

Sega I don't know how you pulled off success by selling the same I.P. like 5 times to the same customer base. Example in the USA we had the choice Atari, Sega or. Nintendo. Atari fresh looking ports of game's that we had sitting in a box. Or take a chance on something different. No one had an Atari.

@@JeremyParish Why have you abandoned NES works? Bring back NES Works! Bring Back NES WORKS! Gattica Gattaca!
jk man, this is an amazing episode. The startling depth of reportage into background to Teddyboy Blues is really appreciated. I played that game once on a multi-cart thing and I thought it was great, but I never knew any of that. Totally get the connection to Flicky now. Love the details about Hang On as well. I never liked that one because it was too easy, now I understand why. Thanks for all you do!
