I'm in the Salt Lake Valley (7b LFD April 21st) and I really appreciate your videos! With how fast and crazy hot our summers get I need all the advice I can get when it comes to spring vegetables.
??? Question 🙋♂️. I watched the video. In one of the cut always it appeared that your garden was a raised bed as I’d seen wooden boards. I have a couple of big gardens that are the size of big garages because I have a roadside stand. I mainly sell tomatoes 🍅 and peppers 🫑 🌶️ even though I attempt other things. That being said, I have a small Stihl tiller, a big 7 hp walk behind Craftsman tiller, as well as my pride and joy that I use all the time now in my arsenal, a huge tiller that I till everything up that attaches to my 3 point hitch on my John Deere 1025R sub compact tractor 🚜. Have I made you garden jealous yet? 😂. Anyway, I take out all of my cattle panels and posts each year in order to do the tilling then reinstall the fencing (I try and rotate the garden which is in part why I do this). But according to your video, since everything goes in the same garden (I live in west central Illinois), I won’t be able to plant those early plantings because they’ll get run over with the tractor and tiller. I always do everything including buying my plants in May. And yes, between garden and flower plants, Miracle Grow bags, etc, I’ve spent and can spend upwards to $800 - $1,000 per year. I’ll run anywhere between 40-60 tomato 🍅 plants, maybe up to 24 peppers 🫑 🌶️, and the rest. I buy flowers 💐 🌺 for the wife for Mother’s Day for the seven whiskey barrels and numerous other hanging baskets and pots that’s outside. In my case, would it just be best to buy a greenhouse to start plants? How do I best put seedlings in early if they have to share with the rest of the garden? I make a couple hundred dollars off my stand each year. I know I’d double my profits if I simply do my own starts (and if I can find heirloom seeds to begin with). But the planting timing doesn’t seem that I’ll work due to my garden equipment. Please advise. If I can find pics perhaps I need to email them to you or you are always welcome to take a trip to Illinois 😂.
Actually only a very small part of my garden is raised beds. The rest is in ground. I'm not sure what to tell you to do for a work around unless you choose a small part of your garden each year that you don't till in the spring. For your tomatoes, the new starts should be a problem, just get them started indoors about 6 or 7 weeks before you need to plant them out and you should be done with the big equipment by then. Also to answer your question about how I deal with tilling. I DON'T. I haven't tilled in 13 years and went 5 years before that. So I've only tilled once in 18 years between my two gardens.
@ why is that? Why don’t you till? We used to have horses and I would rake up the manure each week and put it in a pile, then each spring and fall I would till it in the gardens.
For sure with the tomatoes! I have never tried eggplant in a wall o water so all I can tell you there is to give it a try and see what happens. I've tried peppers and they didn't do all that well.
So my onions were planted about 10 days ago and nada....My leeks are up.....but not the onions. Do I need to replant? I just googled. I guess they needed a heat mat. I'll go do that now.
How old were the onion seeds? Onion seeds don't last long so if they weren't fresh seed that might be your problem. Usually you should see them up in about a week.
Folks, it's OK if you miss the onion deadline by a week. It will just mean slightly less growth on them when you plant them out. I'm not sure you need to purchase at the store if you manage to get them started a week late.

@alesial5946 The only seeds I worry about pre soaking are peas and beans. Everything else is fine.

If you're in zone 5, isn't it early to plant those leafy greens in the tray outside now?
We are actually in Zone 6b, and we have cold frames that those greens will be going into.
I'm in zone 5. I normally wait until the end of February or early March to start my lettuce seeds. But, I don't have a green house or cold frame.

What about peppers should they be started in Feb
Depends on your last frost date. You should start them about 8 weeks before your last frost. For me that isn't until mid March.
