Justin, there are a lot of critical comments on this video, which sucks when you've taken a moment to be vulnerable and real. I'm sorry. It's been a rough year for your family, lots of stressors, both positive (yay Henry, and the book) and negative (boo reactive arthritis). I just wanted to encourage you in those small steps forward you are making, you guys have been full speed ahead for a while. Give yourself permission to take a breath, simplify, do what you need to do to regain that sparkle in your eye when you talk about farming. What's something you could putter at without expectations that would bring your heart some joy right now? You guys are doing great. Honored to be allowed a peek into your life, and for being real with the hard stuff. We all have those times, but we don't all let other people see it.
My feeling is those who criticize homesteaders….go walk in their shoes for one day…how many fathers wear their babies in their backs for hours, how many young kids do chores everyday and take responsibility when a parent is ill like yours, how many people constantly teach their children how to maintain and sustain a farm like you do…it’s always you Justin ….showing your children how to garden, cook, feed animals, solve problems…it’s more then a full time job and you did it even while suffering with your illness….🥰👏👏👏 I applaud you…..you serve your family well….
I work a full time office job while trying to manage our small operations (pigs, chickens, veggies) and it can definitely be overwhelming, especially during the week. I recently asked to go to a 4 day work week (32 hours) so now I have 1 extra day of farm time. It's already looking like it was a good move despite losing some income. Hopefully I can someday make up some of that lost income with farming activities.
Well you can look at it as losing income or you can look at it as building your farm which is going to feed you and ultimately save you a little bit of money.
This was a great example to help people understand that what they see on the internet it just a tiny peek into the lives of those they follow! There is not need to be jealous of all these people with 'perfect' lives, because their lives are just as imperfect and sometimes just as difficult as ours!
I feel overwhelmed too. That's why I haven't been on abundance Plus in a couple of months. I've been so busy working and haven't been able to kick back and enjoy what y'all put out. It's great though!
We started this journey 4 years ago and my husband said no projects this year! He works 60 hour a week at his regular job in addition to our homestead. So this year I have committed to only doing things I can pay someone else to do. It definitely is more expensive this way but it’s better than my husband being overwhelmed.
This is all too relatable! We have a little farm (chickens, pigs, goats, cows, horses, dogs), working full time with 9 kids (including quadruplets). Aaaand it can be quite easy to feel overwhelmed, but I love the 1% mentality. Feeling some accomplishment daily is essential to feeling less stressed! Love the content! ❤️
I love considering the 'law of little bits', and you exemplify it so perfectly in this video. All you have accomplished by focusing on the 1% change you can do each day. Way to go, truly!
Arun and family were a big help for you and yours... Shout out to our India friend. Those that follow the Rhodes please support and find Aruns vlog. Peace.
I’m sure they were in a symbiotic relationship. 🥰 I love how The Rhodes have teamed together as a family to improve their generational legacy farm. ♥️ Keep up the great work. Been following Arun since we found out they left for India. He certainly helped a lot. Don’t forget Rebecca’s mom’s help too. Homesteading needs a supportive community.
This community is exactly how I was raised. I’m in my early 60’s and miss the homesteading life. My Mom and Dad only bought flour, coffee and sugar. Everything else we raised on our farm.. I always say my Daddy didn’t have 7 kids, he had 7 farmhands...💋🧚🏻♀️❤️🇺🇸
Overwhelmed you need to get Justin's book, and make it your go to book I don't want to say Bible cuz that might be disrespectful. But one thing at a time understand your land and it's layout. You don't want to put your livestock in blow dipping land that has a tendency to flood. There's Rob who lives off grid his channel I think is called off grid home. You'll know it because it's red banner and yellow banner and I always say funny title that may or may not be true. He has a comical side. He also has a second channel that's similar in color that is satire in the news. But yeah if you're going to start chickens start with four or five, they are electric portable fences out there. Justin's book, could turn you on to that. I'm turning 64 next month so lots of luck to you. Education is a very valuable thing because you're getting ready to take on other creations lives, and they will be counting on you. If you're sick or is your healthy. The clock that you set is the clock you'll have to live by because your animals will expect feeding time and watering time, well keep us up with what's going on it's going to be interesting. Come out with a channel and make sure we know about it. All right remember you don't have to film 24/7 15 minutes of something it's better than nothing and you get paid for it after a while
Hang in the Uncle Justin. Being sick isn’t fun but your still and inspiration. I love the one percent and have been using it for the past month. It helps me feel better especially when I can’t get as much done as I wanted to. It adds up over time. Love seeing the kids help/ work and problem solve. What a valuable lesson for them. Thanks for sharing.
I was there also at one point, and I realized I'd started too many projects and was pushing myself wayyyy too much. I realized Rome wasn't built in a day and when I slowed down at the projects or got help with them it made it much more enjoyable. Also when we have people looking up to us maybe they can't do as many projects as we can and it makes them think they just wont be able to do it. :( As we get older we just have to figure out what's more important. I have heart trouble so I had to take a chill pill so to speak. It was ONLY me doing the projects and tending to things, I had no help. Now hubby tends to the chickens. You might look into hiring you another helper to help take some of the load off. Those awesome helpers of yours is a huge blessing!!!!! Lilly is just precious! They're children sure, but loads of help! :)
Thanks for the one percent inspiration reminder. Updating the items Done on the To-Do List as a reminder of accomplishments helps forward a person forward to the next project.
I know this is completely random... but my husband and I have pretty nasty depression.. the way I have handled our completely dirty house and getting my life back, is to say.. "Let's just do 1%. Your 1% method has been used daily to my life in this season. Thank you. Thank you so so much. If we could all just treat everything that challenges us in 1% increments, we would make so many changes. Thank you again. You have helped me so much.
Have been fallowing your sustainable homesteading. At my age 62 it’s quite late though I have a small backyard vegetable garden here near Napa Valley, Ca. It’s greatly inspiring to know how you and your family got to this point in 4 years. I worked for Whole foods for about 17 years till 2012 until Cancer get the best of me. I have planned to retire and build a homestead in the Philippines armed with the blueprint of Wholefoods Sustainable farming and animal raising. It was not meant to be as Colon Cancer became my journey. You’re an inspiration to my passion am not able to pursue. Cannot even lift anything beyond 20 lbs or my kidneys fails me too. God Bless you more and hope he keeps your Lyme disease at bay as you raise your young family. Your children are growing responsibly and acquiring life skills they will never learn in s school.
I don’t know exactly why but this video is hilarious and so dear to my heart! We’ve been at this farming gig in western NC for 12+ years with a boatload of kids and this video - ahhh! I just relate to the overwhelming list of to-dos, the lamb mishaps, the pregnant animals, the gates that need fixin, etc! And I’m glad you mentioned your book cause I didn’t know about it until now and I just preordered myself a copy. Love you guys!!! Keep the honest farming videos coming! - Bill and Kina from Mill Spring, NC
Justin I've been following you for a long time. You're one of the first channels I subbed to. For what it's worth, you are doing an amazing job. With the homestead, your livestock and your kids. Those are awesome, resilient, hard working farm kids who know their stuff and stepped up when Papa needed them to. You should be very proud of them and yourself and the beautiful one. Hugs from Alabama!
I think your videos are amazing, a great family, sometimes I worry little one on your back will get his head knocked as it looks like you can forget he’s on your back…..
I grew up doing what you are doing and I am still doing it. You will take it in stride and look back with pride at how those young men did the best they could when Dad couldn't. And, Becca carried one heck of a load too! You are blessed and a true inspiration for young ones who do not know how to live this life. I bless you. Hang in there!
When you had reactive arthritis this past summer - I had covid - I d watch your videos and though I was weak with brain fog and waited out my 14 day quarantine ( all during a time I was suppose to be packing up a 5 room apartment ,garage, and storage🤪) You inspired me to keep going because I saw you with your walker and YOU KEPT GOING!!!
If you go back and watch the first videos you will see that Justin carried all of his children the same way when they were babies and they seem to be just fine. Henery does not seem to mind either. Babies are a lot tougher than people realize.
Justin..you are an inspiration to many. I am learning so much from you. And some stuff is memories on how I was raised growing up on the farm. I walk away with more things to try with every video. Thank you
For the small cow area, add the second pallet and t post fence like your son suggested, but install it 18” ish from the barn wall. So if they so if they try to sneak through, they’ll see that second wall in front of them. So you can sneak through the maze, but the cow can’t.
@@Shridra Sure they love it, but every time Justin stands up quickly or jerks around, little Henry's head jerks backward and that's just not good. His head and neck need more support than that flimsy pack affords him.
Oh my goodness, the judgement and negative comments about Henry are ridiculous. Kids are resilient. I think it’s wonderful how Justin brings Henry right into the daily farm chores. Exposing Henry to the visual and auditory stimulation, fresh air, and enriching environment is so good for his cognitive development and his immune system. Children do not get sick from having a little rain sprinkle on their head. It’s actual worse to over-bundle kids up in inclement weather. If you pay attention you can hear Henry making sounds of enjoyment. If babies are uncomfortable they will let you know.
I agree... I didn't realize when I came into the comment section how many people were judging how he takes care of his kids... like he's a new dad who doesn't know anything or something. He has a lineup of healthy, strong, smart, loved kids... they rock as parents.
Unsubscribed because I couldn't watch Henry in that pack any longer. Head almost slammed into fences and other structures so many times. Also the rabbit situation is so sad.
I know you guys don't have to share a day in the life with us but I'm so grateful you do. Im not perfect and I have crummy days too. If ANYONE says they don't I call toad poop on that. Hang in there warm sunny days are coming and you are truly an inspiration! I wish I lived closer I'd give ya'll a helping hand. But these words are all I can give along with lots of prayer snd good thoughts. And to all negative Netties good luck and God bless!! Love ya Rhodes family Keep up the good work and the faith!!!
You have done so much. As winter wanes and spring starts heading this way, remember that the days are getting longer and the SAD season is gone. God bless you Justin!
I think it is normal to feel overwhelmed, in vinter after the holidays . You can se spring in horisont ,but the days are to short or rains away , it is hard to get projects going . Best wishes from a lamb farm in the south of Finland.
Your children are farmers. Such great answers children 1% change is such a small thing but it is definitely teaching us how to get er done. I spent 5 minutes cleaning out the fridge yesterday...boom!!! ✔️ done. Henry is enjoying being part of the farm life. Thanks again for sharing.
I've been overwhelmed lately as well. I have my day job and my side gig as a writer, then still trying to spend time with my family, do the chores, and somehow record a few new videos. On top of that, I've got a rough cough that even Grandma's tonic can't kick. Workin hard and hardly sleeping, but this too shall pass. Hardship is always a good opportunity to realign your goals and press on towards what actually matters in life: God, family, and being a blessing to others. Hang in there bud, spring is coming.
Inspiration Justin Rhodes! Smile, just smile! There are so many of us that consider you our friend! Thank you for being honest that sometimes everything gets overwhelming! It’s not all sunshine and rainbows!
Longer wood staples, and a cattle panel, and tarp strap. Cut cattle panel to size of open hole, take wood staples and staple one side to wall or post ( staples are the hinges) ( you could use wire and steel post for hinge also) put tarp strap on so it closes itself. Then you have a self closing door or panel that you can walk through but the animals can't.
Watching baby Henry in the backpack carrier. It seems he is not using his arms and he has to hold his head facing sideways and his neck seems to be stressed when his head falls backwards. Maybe a front carrier that faces forward?
Justin...thanks for sharing all your plans and ideas with us, MOST GRATEFUL. Thanks for keeping it real, it's OK hear how challenging the work and weather can be. Rainy cloudy and snowy days does not make one feel GET UP and Go especially after a certain age. You are doing great because of your planning and hard work put in your infrastructure. Man yuh Smart 🤓 yea Rhodes family 👪 👊💪👏👏👏
I often wonder if your going to get a farm hand to replace Arun? I so enjoyed him not that he personally could be replaced but I see he was a great help.
Thanks to your videos and those of your homesteader friends. I bought a freezer, grew 50 meat chickens, have three pigs, harvested 10 matooke bunches, and have 20 layers last year all in 5 decimals. It all started when Jonah was 8 years; one step at a time.
Justin, I think if you wrote a book on how to get your children interested in farming and helping parents around the farm. Now that would be a best seller!
If all he shows on these videos doesn't show you how dedicated he is to keeping his children involved, I don't think a book would help. If he wrote a book it would be a no.1 seller. This man has a dream and we get to watch it unfold in front of us. I feel so blessed.
Baby getting wet I bet, umbrella to small..enjoy when you get in your eighties things can be a lot different, you can go down hill big time, your arthritis may be what does it.we had a garden for years,Father time put us down big time.lost my hubby 12/25/21 on his90 th birthday, together 68 years, married 66, IT’s so lonely depressing.you have your family grown, it’s not the same when the circle broken.no more good Christmas’s ,valentines, mother days.it all stops the good memories are sad,GOD BLESS CONTIUE TO LOVE EACH OTHER LIKE TOMORROW MAY NEVER COME.💞🌸💞
@Justin, your family would be the one family off TH-cam I would love to meet, & I would buy yout books if I had the funds, but at this time we are doing good to feed us and our animals.
I watch with a bit of fear in my heart lately. You make fast turns with the little boy on your back. Henri is very close to walls, corners and fences a lot of the times..
Same. It’s easy to get sidetracked with what you’re doing and forget little one is there. It’s good for baby to be out and about sometimes, but not when he’s getting rained on or almost getting head hit. Maybe a different style baby carrier would be better. One where Henry’s head is up by dad’s (or whoever is carrying him). He just seems to vulnerable in that spot.
@@janohdegroot989 I do not know how long you have been watching the channel but if you go back to the begining you will see that he has carried all his children around like this when they were babies and they seem to be just fine and have not incurred any lasting harm.
If you stop to think that everything you sense with your senses occupies a spot in your mind. When you let things get out of order it causes confusion and congestion. Take control make order happen with all that is around you and that of the people in your life.
Poor little Henry. Feel so sorry for him. Can’t be too comfortable being dangled on your dad’s back while he goes about doing farm chores, not worrying whether you are cold or wet or getting your neck strained from having to either look up, or left, or right. Don’t understand why the baby can’t be left inside the warm house.
I totally agree with you. I was thinking the same about baby Henry. I felt so sorry for the little fella. Nobody is paying any attention to his needs as he is bounced around. Perhaps when his father sees this he will reconsider hauling him around like this.
He is giving Mama a break and if the baby needed something, the baby would complain... that baby is 100% fine and I think it's amazing what great parents they are, and after so many- they know what they are doing. Their other kids have come out so wonderful too. People should be taking notes rather than looking for reasons to criticize because these kids are well-behaved, loved, educated, hardworking and strong... that's very hard to find in children today.
Dear Rhodes family, I feel all the emotions of life when I watch your videos. The reverence you have for the life of the animals that nourish you when it comes to slaughter, the humor of the mundane, incidental joys, birthday parties and holidays, sharing that the struggle is real, the burn it up cooking show, tours of amazing gardens and people, sage advice, and most of all, the love. As I prepare to embark on my dream of something bigger (25 acres!) I am holding dear to the lessons I have learned from you all. So thankful that a random how to plant whatever took me to Roots n Refuge Farm and they led me to you. Looking forward to building my chickshaw this summer. Both of your channels have made a difference in my life, especially through the last 2 years of worldwide turmoil. Thank You!
Hey there Justin, take heart. Spring is not that far away. Regarding the gate for the cow, have you ever heard of a "kissing gate"? The English are so clever. You might look up walk around gates and stiles too. Good job. Enjoyed it.
Thank you for being such an awesome inspiration 🙏I pre-ordered your book via Audible 🎧I hope I also get to see the Master Class and the stuff you mentioned 💫bless y'all ✨
Hello I was directed here by Jess at Roots and Refuge Farms ...I love that one percent each day it's like biting off a little at a time instead of eating the whole thing at once.. I only have a small back yard container garden but sometimes it seems to be a lot. ☮️ ❤️ 💡 GODS CONSTRUCTION
Life, always a challenge. You are a teacher/business man, who loves the self sustaining life style. Your books, videos, and classes are where your creative mind wants to be. Keep it as simple as possible, hire more people to help. 😊
I work 11 day fortnights in a warehousing job thats a 45 minute drive away from my house. Averaging 105hr fortnights. All that whilst having a wife that works away 7 on 7 off, and we have a hobby farm with 3 cows, a bore and 4 breeder pigs and a ram and 5 breading ewes. Also dogs, cats, chooks, and turkeys. It can definitely be overwhelming 🤦
Working off a list, revising, delegating, asking for help when needed, paying for help When you and yours can't keep up... Those are the things we learn over time.

Justin ,
You and your family are so inspiring, we have 8 acres and work full time and feel overwhelmed a lot .
Man I've been trying to do my 1% a day plus and it really makes a difference in a short amount of time. Thanks for that motivation Justin. 👍
Unsubscribed because I couldn't watch Henry in that pack any longer. Head almost slammed into fences and other structures so many times. Also the rabbit situation is so sad.
The farm has come a long way..so impressive..
🚜lookin'good
I know you guys don't have to share a day in the life with us but I'm so grateful you do.
Love ya Rhodes family
Keep up the good work and the faith!!!
You have done so much. As winter wanes and spring starts heading this way, remember that the days are getting longer and the SAD season is gone. God bless you Justin!
Love it Justin, a new perspective is always needed and welcomed. That baby!❤❤
I think it is normal to feel overwhelmed, in vinter after the holidays . You can se spring in horisont ,but the days are to short or rains away , it is hard to get projects going .
Best wishes from a lamb farm in the south of Finland.
It looks like the papoose really gets bounced around! 😀
Without a doubt you all have done a ton of work on the far. I am still not understanding why the rabbits are in a bare hutch with no bedding material.
Justin, love your videos, keep up the good work.
Thanks so much for your videos!
It’s not all sunshine and rainbows!
everything good comes slowly, hang in there buddy..
Wow! Thank you for the 1% thought pattern. You ROCK!
O my gosh. I held my breath how many times did little Henry’s head get smashed on a well a bar a tool hanging on the wall. Yikes!!!!
Looks like the rabbits got no new furniture added to the miracle rabbit cage. Just eat and make bunny balls.
Thank you so much for sharing this.
Watching baby Henry in the backpack carrier. It seems he is not using his arms and he has to hold his head facing sideways and his neck seems to be stressed when his head falls backwards. Maybe a front carrier that faces forward?
Crotch danglers are far worse than the backpack style...just needs to tighten up some straps
That baby is 100% fine...
EVERYONE feels that way after a holiday! Especially when you've had some lovely sunshine and come back to cold rain. Cut yourself some slack ...
Yes, a little step at a time still is progress... even if you're disabled or too ill to do a whole lot, just do what you can.
I often wonder if your going to get a farm hand to replace Arun? I so enjoyed him not that he personally could be replaced but I see he was a great help.
What happened to Arun, please? (I haven't been here in awhile)
I can’t wait for my book to come.
I am definitely overwhelmed. At this point in winter in the frigid north it gets more difficult.
The kids are so awesome on the farm Justin. Thanks for sharing! ✅✅✅👏👏👏🤩🤩🤩💯💯💯❤️
I love hearing farmer Henry voicing his opinion. Lol your kids are awesome!! Love seeing all the animals. Do you still have the rabbits?
You look like you’re caring baby Grogu😍
Thanks to your videos and those of your homesteader friends. I bought a freezer, grew 50 meat chickens, have three pigs, harvested 10 matooke bunches, and have 20 layers last year all in 5 decimals. It all started when Jonah was 8 years; one step at a time.
God bless ya....ALL that work...and with a BABY strapped to your back!!😂👍 We need to get you a Tshirt that reads "Super Dad"😉👍
I have a whole section on that in the book :)
I just went and pre-ordered your book on Audible really looking forward to it first forming book I ever bought
It looks like the Sawmill should return in the spring. The farm is rocking.
Hey, just reflect and focus on what you did accomplish. Keep on keeping on
I plan on taking your 1% advise. Seems as though that would cut down on some stress! Good Luck to you & yours
@@kabodick maybe just a bit more conciousness is enough..
@@janohdegroot989 I do not know how long you have been watching the channel but if you go back to the begining you will see that he has carried all his children around like this when they were babies and they seem to be just fine and have not incurred any lasting harm.
@@josephmyers7344 I agree..
If you stop to think that everything you sense with your senses occupies a spot in your mind. When you let things get out of order it causes confusion and congestion. Take control make order happen with all that is around you and that of the people in your life.
Thanks, I needed this talk today
Very interesting 👌
Blessings to all!
You all have accomplished so much, even during trying times. You should be very proud of yourself and your beautiful family!
Love your family ❤
Félicitations pour votre travail !! On vous aime +++!!! De France. Blessings +++!!!
I love your videos keep on doing what you do.
Good job. Enjoyed it.
Tell us more about those bales of hay. I've never seen hay baled that way. Is it something new?
Thank you for being such an awesome inspiration 🙏I pre-ordered your book via Audible 🎧I hope I also get to see the Master Class and the stuff you mentioned 💫bless y'all ✨
Hello I was directed here by Jess at Roots and Refuge Farms ...I love that one percent each day it's like biting off a little at a time instead of eating the whole thing at once..
I only have a small back yard container garden but sometimes it seems to be a lot.

Life, always a challenge. You are a teacher/business man, who loves the self sustaining life style. Your books, videos, and classes are where your creative mind wants to be. Keep it as simple as possible, hire more people to help. 😊
Thhat baby must be cold on his feet hanging on the back?👶🏻
Henry needs a rain hat or you need a bigger umbrella. Lol
Charlotte from Ky.🙂
I work 11 day fortnights in a warehousing job thats a 45 minute drive away from my house. Averaging 105hr fortnights. All that whilst having a wife that works away 7 on 7 off, and we have a hobby farm with 3 cows, a bore and 4 breeder pigs and a ram and 5 breading ewes. Also dogs, cats, chooks, and turkeys. It can definitely be overwhelming 🤦
happy family........enjoy live together in farm,,,,,,,love from indonesia
I ask myself, “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time!”
Working off a list, revising, delegating, asking for help when needed, paying for help
When you and yours can't keep up...
Those are the things we learn over time.
Awesome show
