  • This is the demonstration from the July 2012 meeting of the Golden Triangle Woodturners in Denton, Texas. Neal Brand shows us how to turn a Support Spindle that is used to spin raw material such as wool into thread for use in weaving.

Some people have asked about what to do if the steel dowel is too loose to fit the whorl. The first thing to do is check that the head and tail of the lathe is perfectly aligned. You can do this by inserting a drive in the head and a live center in the tail - both with centers - and checking that the centers align perfectly. If not, adjust the head or tail according to the directions in the lathe manual. You can also change the bit size you are using. Instead of 1/4 inch, try 15/64 and adjust from there. If all else fails, you can turn a tenon on a sacrificial wood block that fits the whorl hole.
