    I love that in one of the best spy films of all time, our hero never fires a gun. He points a gun, but never pulls the trigger. I know that changes in the sequels, but I think it's something that made Ethan unique in the first film whether audiences realized it or not.

      I'd like to think that the purpose of this was to make M:I clearly differerent than the James Bond movies (especially the Brosnan ones), which were quite a hail of bullets.

    I saw this movie in its entirety for the first time right after coming home from getting my wisdom teeth out. My mom walked in and saw me just staring at the TV with this horrified look on my face and she's like "What's wrong?" and I just whispered "...they're ripping their faces off..."

      Just goes to show that you shouldn't do drugs unless absolutely necessary. With that in mind, I have to ask: what exactly does it feel like to be high? I imagine that it makes you feel good, but you're completely oblivious to the world around you....

    • @AllieAllieOxenFree21
      @AllieAllieOxenFree21 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      I actually HATED it. So much. Like, I can't even tell you how much I hated being high. In the moment it was fine, I suppose, but I was kind of...numb. Floaty. Not alert. Not in control. Also on Vicodin (which was not the only thing I was on when I watched the movie; I also still had whatever they had me on for surgery in my system) I apparently have zero depth perception whatsoever. I don't know why that is, but it is. I mean, don't get me wrong, in the same situation, I'd still take everything I was given all over again, because it sure as hell was better than being in agonizing pain, but still, I was not a fan and would not recommend it unless absolutely necessary.

    Fun fact: The scribbles in her notebook at 8:26 is shorthand writing - the kind used by journalists and secretaries. It would actually be a smart thing to use for blending in since, at a glance, you would think she was reviewing a meeting but likely wouldn't be able to quickly discern what it actually says.

    Pretty sure the stuff on Claire's notepad is just shorthand. My grandma used to write in it. So did my tenth grade English teacher. I'm sure y'all know it's a shortened code for written English largely used by old timey secretaries (predominantly women based on what I've learned from older female relatives who were taught it in school in classes of mostly-girls) used for note taking and dictating when verbal lectures were coming too fast to write verbatim in normal long-hand English that then had to be retranslated back into written English.

    I watched the show as a kid, and loved it very much. Then this movie comes out, and I was 13 at that point.... seeing this movie blew my mind! It is not perfect, but it is so damned enjoyable and I actually like it more than the later movies (not saying I dislike them, I enjoy them too) because the tension never truly lets up, and you are constantly wondering who is going to stab him in the back next. You could see by the end that Ethan was starting to develop a bond with those helping him in the end, and I enjoy this movie even more now as an adult than I did at 13 years old. This movie has so many jaw dropping moments (like the Ethan dangling from the vent scene) and I love it so much for it. It was not a direct copy of the original show, but it was an amazing homage and the new ones have been too, but this one stuck way closer to what made the show great, and I feel that allowed them to basically go crazy in the new movies, and I am ok with that. Also, Tom doing his own stunts, gave me a whole new respect for him as an actor.

The explosion that sent Cruise sideways into a care instead of the traditional forward or backwards. Swinging from one building to the other! The personal stakes of the 3rd act. The rabbit's foot is a huge MacGuffin but still a great movie. Also, Ronin would be a nice one, twenty year anniversary this September... just saying.

    15:07 - 15:29 man that is my absolute favorite thing to do. Picking a movie (When I was 13) I enjoyed when I was like, 5-7, and watching it, and realizing just how much I missed. Then going back now that I'm 21 and rewatching that same film and realizing that, even at 13, I didn't have a CLUE. I grew up with The Lord of the Rings, and the Matrix and there is nothing like going back and rewatching them and just...understanding EVERYTHING. Even Star Wars! A relatively simple movie to understand (At least not including the prequels, which I enjoy, fight me) and going back and rewatching as an Adult is mindblowing

    I now know you are 7 years younger than me. When this movie came out, I was working at a movie theater. It came out the weekend of my Senior Prom, and they told us no one would be granted time off that weekend, because it was going to be a big rush of people. A bunch of us seniors said, "We need that weekend off, or we have to quit." They were not going to lose 18 year olds at the start of summer, so we got the weekend off.
    If you want to do another Jean Reno movie, The Professional. One of my all time favorites.

    Honestly, it had never really dawned on me how much I love this franchise until now. When you said about seeing this movie for the first time at 11/ 12 and not understanding it but loving it anyway, is totally the same for me. And as I watched every subsequent sequel throughout the years I just thought at the time "man this is a good film", but never really thought about the series as a whole until I watched this and thought... "Goddamn, I love every single one of these". In fact Cruise has been in almost all of my favourite movies, the man is gold to me, he absolute deserves his own win.

    @12:50 I think there's an error. Jim's gun is hidden inside a Discman Boombox not a briefcase. Which would explain the choice since a concealed gun would not even be noticed inside 90's electronics equipment with so many mechanical metal trays for CD and Cassette player.

      TheKnowledgeSeeker
      Took the words right out of my mouth. If only Disney marketed the film better on the trailers and posters it could've potentially been a huge hit at the box office. Just say something like 'based on the classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs' or 'the story that inspired Star Wars and Avatar' or 'from the director of Finding Nemo and Wall-E'. If they did something like that, audiences would've been more interested in seeing it. Still wish Andrew Stanton's planned trilogy wasn't cancelled. I really wanted my Gods of Mars movie. It would've looked fantastic on screen as well as Warlord of Mars.
      Anyone else agree?

      Agreed but tbh cinema sins isn't that comparable. It's purely for comedy and is exaggerated to a ridiculous level on purpose. This is comedic but actually provides quality analysis of the film which is not what you look for if you're watching cinema sins

    • @LedPESRule
      @LedPESRule 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hey, if you enjoy Sins *ONLY* for comedic purposes more power to you, even though personally I don't really see the humor in a guy not getting movies, at least not the way he's doing it.
      Also, it's not "on purpose" for comedic purposes, that has been debunked every time you hear his actual reviews which are just as wrong... It's just laziness and incompetence.
      Further delve into it with this for example: th-cam.com/video/vRSArNN6wJE/w-d-xo.html

    I was hoping you would bring up my theory about this movie: Kittridge knew all along that Ethan was not responsible. Why els being him to a public restaurant, give him all the info he would need to track down the actual person responsible, and have the same IMF team at the restaurant. He was giving him the clues to follow.
    The complaint I hear about that theory is "Why then did he arrest Ethan's parents?" Easy answer: he had to give Ethan an excuse to reach out to him.
    Think about it: Kittrdige does not seem surprised at all that Phelps is still alive.

    • @Enigma1788
      @Enigma1788 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Eric Bouchard I've also always felt that way about the first film. The N64 game loosely follows the plot of this film for missions 2-4. A key change was them admitting that they knew Ethan wasn't the mole, but they disavowed him anyway as a way to draw out the real mole.
      Of course, considering how long the game was in development hell, I would not be surprised if Atari was basing the game on an early version of the script.
      As for the "Phelps is the mole" reveal, that could have been such a simple fix: full reboot, Tom Cruise is Jim Phelps. Hell, the moment Peter Graves refused to do the film should have been the moment that the producers said "Yeah, this Phelps as the mole thing isn't going to work. Let's just say Tom's character is a young Jim Phelps."

    • @7Seraphem7
      @7Seraphem7 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      It's not a bad film in general. Not amazing, but is decent enough for a generic Sci-Fi film. Though still has plenty of flaws. Holdo being a freaking MORON for no damn reason; the trip to planet Casino, while doing well to set up and play up some of the thematic elements the story was going for, narratively feels massively out of place; The time scale is just all kinds of fucked up, between travel time to Luke's planet, and the time Rei spent there first trying to get him to train her, then being trained, she was there for several days at least and that is pushing it, yet this all went on in the exact same time as the chase, which was not made to feel like it had been going on that long; the physics are just shit, even for Star Wars.
      But It's a freaking horrible Star Wars movie that goes out of it's way to slam the audience's face in a reset button trying to get thing back to EXACTLY where things were at the start of the OT, making all the victories and struggle of the original heroes pointless. It carries the heavy feeling that they are trying to get a fresh start, but don't have the balls to admit they do and just do a full reboot.
      Even compared to TFA, playing up Snook that much, and then just tossing him away without explanation of who the fuck he was, making this big deal about Anakin's original lightsaber choosing Rei, only to destroy it, and while I do actually like her not being from some 'special' family, but simply naturally talented on her own merits, her having some bigger past was played up and hinted at too much in TFA to not feel cheap to have all that now meaningless.
      And there are parts I liked and were well done. I kind of loved Snook's whole ripping apart Kylo's Darth Vadar wannabe shtick, and it spurred some great growth in the character. The Crystal Foxes were just so damn gorgeous, and as much as it makes no damn sense, the hyperspace ship cut was awesome. But on the balance... I left the movie feeling.... bleh, and unsatisfied.
