By todays standards, he wasn't far off tbh. Way more limited variety of Anabolic drugs, coupled with a mentality still focused on pushing the envelope in terms of training, diet etc. Nowadays, everyone knows the best way to build muscles, everyone has a 90% identical diet to each other, so other than genetics the only way to keep pushing the limits of the human body is via utilising the most cutting edge drugs. Obviously it's not all down to drugs, I mean I'll never come close to having that level of body, even if you gave me the biggest doses of the best drugs available to man. Genetics + Training + Diet + Drugs, you need every one almost perfect to get to the level of champ.
I dont know if you know this but Arnold took steroids back when he was a bodybuilder, steroids weren't considered bad and it was normal to use it for bodybuilding and bodybuilders weren't afraid to admit steroid use since it was so normal. Most of these people die by the time they are in their 40's and 50's! I looked up many bodybuilders from the 1990's and a lot of them are dead Nasser El Sombaty, Greg Kovak, etc. They eat way too much animal protein and when they bulk they also eat tons of carbs, all that add to cholesterol and heart attacks. It's truly sad....
Back in the late 1970s was when I started to weight train and bodybuild, when bodybuilding as a sport was really taking off. Somehow, I couldn't get as big (or proportionately as big) as my pro idols. I followed everything they all "sincerely" advised, like, train hard, have discipline, don't give up, exceed yourself, eat right, sleep right, 2 forced reps on high intensity training, etc... and I couldn't even come close. I was still this hard body lean (5 to 6% body fat), light-framed but "somewhat" burly guy. Then later, they talked about you have to have the genes, too. I stayed with weight training now for 42 years straight and I never got that big... but I got tremendously (naturally) strong with some of my exercises, in terms of my power-to-weight ratio. For example, in my younger years, I could do one-arm dumbbell concentration curls of 2 reps of half my body weight (on my 5th and final heavy set) and I could strap on 100 pounds and do slow, strict, full-range lat pull-ups to behind the neck... as I weighed 140 pounds. I dominantly used such refined power against my opponents in the 3 sports I played in: soccer, volleyball, and table tennis. Looking back after the 20th year of my weight training, I then heard that they all just forgot to tell me (when they publicly admitted it) about taking a gallon of roids 3 times a day on an empty stomach (exaggeration and sarcasm here, of course). But for those first 20 years of my training, I naively kept following their advise to "not ever take steroids because they are BAD for you!" (Apparently bad for me, but good for them so there's less competition.) And so I never did... to this day. And I still won't. I'm 58yo now... weigh 138 pounds (standing at 5'9") and was still strapping 80 pounds on the lat pull-up before the pandemic hit in March of 2020. For the rest of my strength, I am about at 40% now due to a mild car accident 22 years ago that blew out my left knee and everything went downhill (except for the lat pull-ups, which I still enjoy... but when I started back a month ago again due to this pandemic hiatus, I struggled with my body weight to do just 6 pull-ups. LOL! Yesterday, I could strap on 25 pounds again on my final 4 reps... and that's where I'll probably keep it into my older years. I know I can strap 45 pounds for 2 reps, but I'd rather take it easy now.). Since I found out about being lied to about the roids about 22 years ago, I gave up on admiring roid-built physiques altogether. The younger generation weight trainers at the gym today embrace the idea that they should use all the latest technologies available to them (including anabolic steroids) to grow quick and big... and that I should take them, too... and I always say, "No thanks." And that's just me and my take on it all.

@@cantagiousca5220 pretty much, yeah, it can be. As you need good genetics and a drive and grit to strive to be a bodybuilder. You can't just walk into it and become a body builder within the first few years, that doesn't happen. You have to stick with it, lifting and working that body to it's fullest potential. Some don't succeed, even after 20 years and that's mostly brought on by genetics. It's more of having good genetics that's the superhero part along with that determination to stick with it for so long, even after they're unable to add anymore muscle to their body.
The sheer confidence and dominance Arnold and Dorian exuded on the stage is unmatched.
Logically, they were chosen by the Weiders to be the faces of bodybuilding. They played it safe.
@@MrClifford1976 sure they were, a random European dude from Europe where the sport was relatively unknown and not that popular was chosen by the Weiders to be the champion 6 years in a row. Yates wasn't a great champion marketing wise, why would the Weiders deliberately kill their business with someone from England who trained 360 days of the year in his dungeon and never left his house instead of putting someone like Flex or Levrone who lived in the States as their face of the sport and face of the Mr. Olympia?

@@Kas58223 well if far ahead for you means bigger = better then yes, but the aesthetics of the oldschool olympians was 10 times better
The Greek God physique that Arnold achieved in body building had to be the best and most aesthetically pleasing and one I will always look up to
there are many other physiques that embody the "greek god" aesthetic more though lol, arnold had a pretty blocky waist and wasnt very balanced and proportional compared to someone like frank zane, or serge nubret if you want more mass. I think he gets overrated due to his popularity
I was a young American Airforce kid stationed Near Oxford England & would train at gyms in different cities & sell Crazyware American workout clothes to the Brits... This was in 1988-1990... The shot of jays quad stomp has to be one of the most iconic moments in modern bodybuilding.
The bubble gut started when they used barbecue sauce instead of just nothing or oil.
If you think bodybuilders like Arnold were natty, you're clearly delusional
@Tcb bct again if you think bodybuilders at 80s knew more about drugs than modern bodybuilders you're delusional as well.
@Tcb bct again that's absolute bullshit. People at Olimpia levels were always blasting absolutely everything they could to be the best in the world.
I will always call Arnold's fanboys delusional because they know absolutely nothing about sport and different divisions and just masturbate to Golden Era boys.
@@duhotatoday3277 absolutely, the reason that arnold was able to have that tight gut, despite being on everything under the sun available, was because he was so young. if you asked him to do the same thing ten years later like most of the "bubble gut" guys end up hitting the olympia stage at, you'd see something pretty similar.
Lee Haney is my favorite of all time. No one speaks of his mass, aesthetic ,lines and small waist. He was huge too! But people tend to overlook that he had size with class
THAT'S WHERE I WOULD AGREE THAT TOTAL LEE AWESOME HANEY THE FIRST TO BREAK ARNOLD'S RECORD & ONLY ONE TO RETIRE UNDEFEATED AFTER 8× OLYMPIA VICTORIES!

Bodybuilding is aesthetics yes. But it's also rewarding the hard work put into getting that physique. Ronnie is incredible in a different way than arnold, to be that shredded while being that big is incredible, truly a display of pure muscle.
Today people with arnold's body size saying "im natural"
yeah Arnold was "natural" to XD
Lol.
Simeone Panda?
I dont know if you know this but Arnold took steroids back when he was a bodybuilder, steroids weren't considered bad and it was normal to use it for bodybuilding and bodybuilders weren't afraid to admit steroid use since it was so normal. True

@@yetrotagabundok3756 Yeah, I'm the same way, I'm 6' 1" and I've trained for nearly 15 years. I weigh 212lbs right now and sit at 7% body fat. I can't get any bigger.
