Scrambler! In 2017 I sat on the couch with the youngest of my 4 kids. She was 10 at the time, and we were nervous and excited about an upcoming southbound thru-hike attempt of the PCT. Among her many highlights of the hike was discovering your name on the wall at the Saufley's trailer at Hiker Haven. My daughter is now 15. She is a triple crowner, and we are sitting here watching your video again, marvelling at how amazing it was for an 11 year old to walk all that way. Thanks for the inspiration!
Easily the best documentary on the PCT. Stripped down from all of the usual stories of self discovery and self involved rubbish. An inspiring story of a close family on the adventure of a life time. I feel like we watched Mary grow up before our eyes. This should be entered in Documentary Film Festivals around the country. Brilliantly done.
I just finished watching every minute of this video. This video is one of my favorite videos on TH-cam ever. I was glued to my screen. How inspiring. I loved watching this girl and her parents on this journey. I am really inspired. Kudos to the 10 year old girl! Kudos to the parents! Thank you for sharing this with the world. I LOVED being a part of this through watching your video today. You all showed a lot of class and character. I haven't even looked at your channel yet to see if you have any more vidoes, butI hope that you can make some more, but even if you don't, you have a real gem in the making of this video. Thanks again for making it and sharing this experience with us.
Thank you so much for sharing your adventure with me!!! I was inspired, happy with you, and in awe that Scrambler finished. Beautiful people in beautiful landscape. God bless.
This was one of the best things I have watched on You Tube in some time. It not only showed how a family can work together and support one another. But that there are still people in the world that can meet as strangers and become life long friends. Thank you for sharing with US.
I have hiked sections of the PCT and I can tell others it ain't for the weak, not physically, and certainly not mentally, you better be strong in both. You 3 are incredible! Great Job! "Bushman" out!
Thats one smart young lady. Very proud of all 3 of you. She is really going to do something very awesome for this planet in her adult life. God Bless Peace
Cant believe I haven’t seen this it’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen GOD BLESS All THREE of you I’ve still got tears in my eyes what a trip congratulations
Greetings from the UK! Firstly I would like to just say how much more inspired I now am to make hiking the PCT solo a reality for myself, after seeing the determination of Mary and just the fact of her being so young and having traveled so far just fuels me further! When Mary is asked by Crow regarding the reasons as to why a lot of people hike the PCT to find themselves and to discover deep truths within themselves. I think that Mary has a completely different outlook on the journey with her being so young. With most hikers they are looking to regain touch with themselves having been lost somewhere along their life, stuck in the "rat-race", out of touch with what is important in life and the false stresses of living in the modern world. Essentially they are trying to get themselves back to being a "Mary". Mary has not been suffocated or weighted down by everyday life yet and as is clearly visible she is still intouch with herself and the simple/ important things in life. Lots of respect for her and her parents. Thanks for the story! Matt, future PCT Solo hiker.
Thanks for this insight! You've hit on so many of the themes we wanted to put across in the film, after working with Mary and family as they hiked. Good luck on your hike!
This is the best PCT video I've ever watched. Congrats to you Mary for being the youngest hiker to complete the PCT! Congrats to your parents, Gary and Barbara, for completing the PCT and for having such a wonderful daughter, they must be so proud! I am so inspired. Thanks for sharing the adventure.
A very well done video more parents should involve their children in quests like this, it builds self confidence, the ability to handle pressure and upset, perseverance, social skills, and involves them in planning the trip. Kudos to Scrambler and her terrific parents for sharing this 6 months of their lives. I just found and ordered your book from Amazon and look forward to a great read.
Absolutely outstanding ! What a great little Spirit .......and that experience is so life shaping! Kudos to you guys for allowing Scrambler to be a part of such a great adventure. The AT awaits! Safe Journeys! Shortcut
Awesome adventure!!!! I have two daughters of my own and it would be a dream come true to make such an amazing and memorable journey with them. Thanks for sharing!!
I wished I have a family that would hike with me. I was really inspired by Mary. She's not a normal 10 years old. Her will power and determination is amazing. It was tough for me to watch but I want to see it til the end. I love it when you all finished the PCT. Congratulations! Mary is full of life and manage to put smiles on those tired hikers. Thank you for sharing this wonderful video.
You must be very proud of your daughter. It's awesome to see a kid her age doing such a crazy hike, that a lot of adults don't finish, and mostly with a smile on her face.
Beautiful video. I met another couple who took both their young children. So awesome. We are going through from Mt. Shasta to Kelsey creek. I can't wait. When we retire we will spend lots of time on the trail. Love and Blessings! Shalom!
wow, I had to stop and comment...you folks just gave your daughter one of the greatest life experience ever! more power to you guys. she's a tough and brave kid, not to mention adorable. ok, I'm going to continue the video....thanks for sharing!
I just wanna say I watch a lot of hiking videos and love hiking myself. That said... that's a great adventure to give to youre kid and wish my parents started me out at that age. You guys rock!
Very interesting view of the PCT and great documentary, thank you. This family is amazing, the determination and courage shown by them is inspiring. The difficult choices and situations that were surmounted truly shows mind over matter. The little girl is an amazing soul, I hope she continues to chase goals and dreams with that same robust drive, obviously instilled in her by her parents who are amazing people for taking such a chance and being so supportive of each other. The father is epic, no other word, his vision and drive is clearly living in his daughter.
I must say when I started watching this it was difficult, I felt a 10 year old is too young for the challenge and the parents seemed a little on the elderly side and slow moving for such a long hike. I even stopped watching about 7 minutes in because It was difficult to think of Mary walking across the desert and thought it was bordering on abusive. I couldn't help but to come back and what the outcome would be and I couldn't have been more wrong. Mary isn't just any 10 year old, she is extremely intelligent and has incredible determination and is tough enough to be a Navy Seal. Mary's parents have such a calm temperament that conceals their strength and determination but it's easy to see where Mary gets her qualities. This is beautiful documentary that is moving and interesting as any outdoor documentary I've seen in recent years but is as humble as Mary's parents. I wish I had half of Mary's ability to express herself because I can't express how much I enjoyed this. BRAVO!!!
What a fantastic trip. Mary is a true inspiration to others and it is great to see a family tackle such a challenging trip together and still be smiling at the end of it all. Awesome.
That is such a feat! Let alone for a 10 year old girl. And she stayed positive alot longer than mom and dad. The life lessons and learned skills will last a lifetime. And major kudos for not cracking when mom wanted to quit so close to the finish line! Given the conditions and various hard ships, it was probably very hard not to quit. Loved it. Rock on.
Thanks to all our viewers for making this a great year. We've been busy with other documentary projects, but we've passed your comments along to Mary, her family, and others in the film. Keep them coming...and please share the film with others, especially young viewers who can benefit from seeing the tenacity required for success. Happy new year -- and keep training for the start of the next PCT season in April!
You guys are HARD CORE! I never thought you would make it... thought the snow would end it... Mary is quite the wonderful child! Enjoyed the whole thing!!!
Mary is so mature and funny: “Why are you stopping?” Proud of your beautiful family for such an amazing adventure! Can’t wait to see your next adventure.
i loved hearing Mary talk about the trail and how determined she was to finish. and her father he looked so bad in Washington but he still pushed on. i think a big part of it was he didn't want to disappoint his daughter. one if not the best hiking video i have seen. can't wait to see more of mary's videos. be safe and maybe one day we will meet on the trail.
Absolutely amazing video. I've watched a lot of hiking videos, PCT, CDT, etc. Some have great video editing and effects, music, but none have the story and the real connection as yours. Scrambler is incredible. You should be proud. She's obviously wise and mature beyond her years and has experienced something so few people have. Her drive, motivation and attitude is a testament to great parenting.
What a great video. Mary is inspirational. She has so much spirit and character. I have watched many videos about hiking the PCT but Mary made yours special. Mary... your personality is so much fun and your enthusiasm is infectious. I bet that many other hikers that year were able to go an extra mile or two after they had met you.
That little girl really caught the fever.Thats great. The sun frustrated her at 50:00 and I knew she was a hiker for life. When I did K2 we waited on weather more than we climbed and The sun was always mocking us. What a great film.
Wow. At first I was captivated by how cute Scrambler is but as the video goes on it becomes much more than that. It is an exceptional story of perseverance in completing the PCT. Very moving and thanks for sharing this experience.
Hello Campo I really enjoyed your video of the PCT. Way to stay in the hike! You should be really proud of Scrambler. She is a real trooper. Glad you all made it safe to the Canadian boarder. Happy Trails from GNW Issaquah WA.
So another PCT season is heading to a close, wow. Thanks to everyone for all the comments this past summer; we've been busy with other documentary films but always enjoy reading what viewers have to say about the PCT, and Mary & family. Please keep the comments coming, and please share this film with your friends and family -- that's how it gets around.
I love how u showed everything, the good and bad, I love all the trail language, yogi is my favorite and that looks trailish!! I've done that a few times, thanks for sharing
Wow. You three are awesome. I love watching videos of hikers on the PCT and how they deal with the many challenges over the course of their adventure from Campo to Canada. I guess being older we don't change as easily. I was amazed at Mary and her evolving personal commitment through adversity and hardship. Its an excellent video, with many messages we can all learn from. Congratulation to you Gary, Barbara and Mary, and thank you for sharing your experience with all of us.
Peter, we appreciate hearing your thoughts about the documentary and about Mary and her family. You're right, seeing her change in dealing with various situations is great to witness.
Happy I found you guys. My teen (16) and tween (9) are hiking the pct with me in '19. They're so excited. And are now devoted fans of your channel. :-)
What a nice family. It has been very nice to watch their journey. It is really silly to think you have to finish. You brought your family over 2,000 miles. Be grateful dude!
I find it hilarious all of the people Cpt Bligh talked to towards the end with nothing but negativity, saying its impossible to finish, at one time the whole group saying how bad your health looked but every time you just said nope I'm going to finish no matter what, I think they just didn't want you to finish because then it proves that it was possible to finish but they didn't have the will power to overcome. Great job guys.
I watched your wonderful documentary with rapt attention. I admire your family unity, and your patience. It must have been a little scary finishing up in the snow. What did you dab on your daughters toes? Wow!! What an accomplishment, I'm proud of what you did!
I love how Mary always brought joy to every situation, her enthusiasm was clearly contagious. I'm sending this link to my sister so her 7 year old daughter can watch it. Well edited and I teared up at the end when they completed their journey. I'm doing the trail border to border next year and when I hit tough trials I will think of how Scrambler overcame her's.
Thanks, Jason - please do send it along to friends and family; we rely on that for more people to see this film! And good luck with your hike next year - the key, as you know, is lots of training.
I've always wanted to try this trail and maybe one day when my kids are older we can accomplish what u guys did. Much love and respect to u guys as parents and too your daughter. It's amazing what you guys did as a family.
Thank you very much. I had an inspirational journey from portland to santa criz on bike and can only imagine what epic journey you had. It makes me so happy to enjoy something on the internet positive :)
Wow such a beautiful emotional video, this made me tears. That brave little girl is such an inspirational soul. Love you all from the country of Jordan:)
What a great Documentary, very well put together. I actually had a tear drop in joy for you wirh you when you made it to BC. One of the best PCT Thru-hike Documentaries I have watched.
after reading Cheryls Strayed's " Wild " i google the PCT here. what a great experience ! extra huge thumbs up Mary what a brave thing to do ! thanks for sharing your story
I really enjoyed your story. I really admire both of you and Mary for taking on this wonderful trail. I love to hike but right now my health isn't too great but one day I would love to hike this trail. Thanks again for sharing your journey.
mjavor : wild.pcta.org/stories/pct-childs-play/ Mary Chambers, better known by her trail name “Scrambler,” never doubted she would complete the Pacific Crest Trail. “We’re going to finish!” she would declare whenever someone questioned whether she was capable of walking from Mexico to Canada in a single hiking season. And despite being only ten years old at the time and weighing less than 70 pounds, Scrambler did indeed finish her hike on October 25, 2004, reaching the Canadian border after a final struggle through the snows of the North Cascades. This article is adapted from a piece that appeared in the PCTA’s Communicator magazine. Mary is now 20 years old and attends Stanford University. Her parents Barbara and Gary live in Sunol, Calif., where Barbara is a freelance writer and book editor and Gary is a freelance photographer and online book producer. You can read more about this incredible family journey in the book Zero Days; The Real Life Adventure of Captain Bligh, Nellie Bly, and 10-year-old Scrambler on the Pacific Crest Trail by Barbara Egbert. (Wilderness Press, 2008). Upon the ten-year anniversary of their thru-hike, Barbara further reflects on the PCT’s impact on her life in another essay on this site. (continued. That is the toughest and most mature ten year old I have ever seen, with a great spirit to boot. She'll go far in life!
That little lady is something else. Mother and father as well.
Yes, they are!
Thank you. I, as a father, greatly appreciate this tale.
Absolutely loved this PCT documentary. I was crying and clapping when they got to the northern terminus. That little girls has spunk.

We are all in a process of self discovery on a trail or off, but when challenged, we find out who we really are.
Wow, that kid is super smart..Her family is so unique and they seem like great people.

An amazing achievement for Mary. She is an inspiration for anyone trying to connect their footsteps along the PCT.

Glad you like the film, Allie, we enjoyed working with Mary and her family as we made it. Pass it along, and good luck on your hike.
I just found your film, and OMG what a wonderful journey and story. Way to go Scrambler you are a true inspiration. Cheers, John
That was amazing! What an amazing 10 year old. Probably the best thing I've seen on youtube. Ever.
That little girl had more spunk than both parents. Can't wait to show my two sons this movie! 10 and 6 years old.

Campo To BC : Thank you so much for sharing this video. My life is better after watching it.
One of my favorite PCT videos. If they ever made a movie out of this I would pay to see it.
David Giezyng : I wish the young lady had a GoFundMe set up so we could contribute to her college education. I would certainly pay for that.

Mary Chambers, better known by her trail name “Scrambler,” never doubted she would complete the Pacific Crest Trail.
