  • I use the full characteristics of shadows - shapes, edges, color, pleasing angles and values in this watercolor demo based on the pretty village of Fivizzano in Tuscany.
At the start of this video, I show my source photograph for the painting. If you want to keep referring to this during the video, then copy the URL of the video into another browser Tab or Window on your device. Run the video again, but of course pause it at the start where I show the source photo. In Chrome, you can also right-click on the tab and select ‘Duplicate’.

Thanks Tim.I was almost forget about you.I know that is not easy to produce videos, but after 4 years being fan and pupil i think that i dont get enough videos from you.Yes you produce one each week, but only two at month are real teaching videos.I dont know how hard it is but i promise you ,if you produce every month 3 videos like this(i call them real Wilmot cases)you will have same number of fan viewers for every videos.Mabey you dont know how famos you are in watercolour world.Mabey you can show us another night picture like 2 month before.Or how to paint birds for geting the distance,or something else. But if you paint houses, people and cars witch is your speciality we always gonna watch you.Greetings from Slovenia....

I didn't think at first that the photo was very interesting but you transformed it with your pencil and the fist wash and created a beautiful painting. I'm very impressed.

Your synopsis reviewing the temperature of the shadows was so helpful. You turned a mundane photo into a beautiful work of art.

I love how boldly you are putting the colours on the paper and how - layer after layer - the artwork is coming to life!
When I first saw your sketch I was like .... „wait .... what...?!“ ... and then this!!
Thanks so much for your tutorial.

I probably would have passed this picture up to paint as a bit boring, but you turned it into a lovely, vibrant, street scene. Thanks for showing how you did it!

Time of day = long or short shadows and shadows can be have many tones and colors! Abstract impressionism lets you go crazy with lots of shadow colors.

It would be so helpful to see your reference photo as you paint, particularly as you are so creative and add so much to the original. Also, as a novice, it would be easier to follow why you are doing what you are doing.. I would rather see the photo vs. your pallet.

Wonderful tutorial Tim, really informative on shadow temperature. Could I ask if you use permanent alizarin? The original is beautiful but I find myself scared to use it because of the permanence issue.

sometimes shadows transition smoothly from hard to soft (eg during sunny summer mornings or late afternoons before sunset). how might one capture such smooth transitions from hard to soft using watercolour ? beautiful painting, as always lovely colours and interpretation.
