  • In this video Murray Hallam tells Steve Raisner aka Potent Ponics that iAVs is extremely easy to operate, requires no supplements, has pH buffering, and is able to be used in off-grid situations.

    Nice Murray, great to see.
Dr McMurtry did his work in Africa. We started working on returning it to Africa back in 2014, and at that stage the term Sandponics did not exist. Dr McMurtry helped us with advise and support back then, but asked us not to use the term iAVs as ours had a greater leaning towards the fish rearing. We then coined the term Afriponics.
As your experiencing, the growth we also experienced was phenomenal, since then we had a coup in the country we were working in, a pandemic & shootings, but we are setting up again in Cape Town.

Wow, that is excellent, I will let Dr McMurtry know. Do you have any data to share on your yield amounts and feeding rates?

Sandponics is the future of aquaponics! :-)

The whole thing was started with iAVs but then as it passed along to different people, it got twisted and modified. When we say Aquaponics, everyone thought it is the twisted one with Hydroton and 24-hour pumping with siphon. Very sad indeed

It is so easy and we are now using over 90% less electricity compared to other systems that run the pumps constantly.

That is correct - iAVs is the way of the future and also been there since the beginning!

While Aquaponics is filtering out the solids Sandponics is processing the solids keeping all the nutrients in the system. This is posible due to the higher surface area of sand as grow media to colonize beneficial bacteria that are required to convert the fish waste to plant available nutrients. This will lead to a stable system with less maintenance compared to Aquaponics that constantly needs to be checked. It is more flexible, allows for potatoes, etc, plants that grow fruits below the surface, The conversion rate is much more efficient and will yield in higher production on the plant side and therefore lead to a higher FCR-feed conversion rate of the system. How about using the water from a dirty duck pond ? Now You have egg and meat production. How about using waste water to cultivate Azolla, Duckweed and moringa to name a few to clean the water and use it as a food supplement for animals to lower costs and to return clean water to ground water? And all posible with a minimum of investment and labour.

@@iAVs-Sandponics I believe with the low energy demand of a Sandponics system and todays cheap solar and wind electricity is not an issue anymore unless for colder climate zones but also here the water and sand are working in favor as both have a good thermal mass for heat storage.

Go to wikipedia and learn more about iAVs or go to the iAVs.info website which is the official site for Dr. Mark McMurtry..

      Of course I did..........
The sand bio-filter is the heart of the iAVs “living machine”. The substitution of gravel for sand impacted the efficacy of the original iAVs in several ways including:
significant reduction in mechanical filtration capability
significant reduction in soil organism populations and activity
reduced aeration of media bacteria and plant root zone
reduced nutrient utilization and system stability
significant reduction in fish survival, feed rate and growth
increased capital costs with reduced fish and plant yields
increased operating cost per unit of production
One of the key features of the iAVs design was its versatility. The same system design could be used by a backyard farmer or an impoverished villager or a protected cropping greenhouse operator.
The first casualty of the change in media was iAVs’ commercial potential.
And the second casualty ? Now here is something strange

The construction of an iAVs demonstration system.
I was one of them 476 subscribers since 2016.
So what happened to the collection of 7 videos of Gary Donaldson ?
What happened to the other 6 videos of the construction of an iAVs demonstration system ?
